Subscribe to our NewsletterIntroduction Thank you for volunteering to help run our swim meets! Your support is crucial to the success of our events and the enjoyment of our swimmers. Below is a list of volunteer roles and their responsibilities to help you understand what each job entails.
1. Timer
Responsibilities:
- Use a stopwatch to time swimmers in each race.
- Record the times on the provided sheets.
- Ensure accuracy and consistency in timing.
- Communicate with other timers to resolve any discrepancies.
- Note: We aim to have enough volunteers so that timers can switch off halfway through the meet. Please indicate if you prefer to volunteer for the 1st half or 2nd half of the meet.
2. Runner
Responsibilities:
- Collect time sheets from timers after each race.
- Deliver time sheets to the scorekeeper.
- Assist with distributing heat sheets and other materials as needed.
- Ensure smooth communication between different areas of the meet.
- Note: We aim to have enough volunteers so that runners can switch off halfway through the meet. Please indicate if you prefer to volunteer for the 1st half or 2nd half of the meet.
3. Scorekeeper
Responsibilities:
- Enter times from the time sheets into the scoring sheets using paper and pencil.
- Calculate and record the scores for each event.
- Ensure accuracy in the scoring process.
- Communicate results to the announcer and ribbon writers.
4. Stroke and Turn Judge
Responsibilities:
- Observe swimmers to ensure they are following the rules for each stroke.
- Report any infractions to the meet referee.
- Attend a brief training session before the meet.
- Ensure fair competition by enforcing swimming rules.
5. Clerk of Course
Responsibilities:
- Organize swimmers into their heats and lanes.
- Ensure swimmers are ready and in the correct order for their races.
- Communicate with coaches and swimmers to manage any changes.
- Maintain order and efficiency in the staging area.
6. Ribbon Writer
Responsibilities:
- Write the names and times of swimmers on ribbons for each event.
- Ensure accuracy in the information on the ribbons.
- Organize and distribute ribbons to the appropriate swimmers.
- Assist with maintaining an inventory of ribbons and awards.
7. Starter (Home Meets Only)
Responsibilities:
- Signal the start of each race using a starting device (e.g., whistle, horn, or electronic starting system).
- Ensure all swimmers are ready and in position before starting the race.
- Communicate with the timers and officials to ensure a fair start.
