MCSA BOY'S BASKETBALL RULES

 

 

1. Pregame Warm-Up

  • Standard warm-up time: 5 minutes, unless the previous game ends within 3 minutes of scheduled game time.
  • If the previous game ends within 3 minutes of scheduled start, warm-up will be capped at 2 minutes.
  • All teams must have assistant coaches, scorers, and players ready to begin immediately when called.

2. Game Durations

3. Playing Time

  • All players must play at least half the game (Freshman–Senior).
  • Substitutions occur every 4-5 minutes (stoppage for substitutions only; roughly a 10-second restart window)
  • Coaches may not delay play during substitution periods—possession awarded to the opposing team if delay occurs.
  • No player may play 3 consecutive shifts, except when teams have only 5–6 players.
  • Adjusted shift rules apply if the team has less than 10 players (see “Roster Scenarios” below).
  • Rotations must be sumbitted prior to game at table or there will be technical free throws awarded and the other team will start with the ball

Roster Scenarios

6 players Coach may sub more frequently; no player sits twice before another sits once
5 players Players may play entire game as necessary

Injury, late arrivals, or foul-outs are treated according to normal substitution guidelines for reduced rosters.

4. Fouls and Free Throws

  • Bonus: After 7 team fouls in a half.
  • Double Bonus: After 10 team fouls in a half.
  • Standard free throw procedures apply by division.

5. Defense Rules

Freshman / Sophomore

  • Man-to-man defense only.
  • No zone defense.
  • Defenders must be within 6 feet of their assigned player when inside the three-point arc or foul line extended.
  • Third illegal defense = 1 penalty point to opponent + retained possession (each following infraction same).

Pressing rules

  • Man press allowed full court, but no zone presses.
  • Equal number of defenders and offensive players must be in the backcourt during pressure.
  • Trapping is allowed anywhere, at any time, but not permitted when leading by 20 or more points.
  • No pressing allowed when up 15 points

Juniors / Seniors / Pros

  • Any defensive style allowed (man, zone, trap, press).
  • Teams may not press while leading by 20 points (may resume if lead reduced to 14).

6. Press Defense Rules

Sophomore Standard middle School Rules; no press when up by 20
Junior Standard high school rules; no press when up by 20
Senior/Pro Standard high school rules; no press when up by 20

7. Lane Violations

  • Freshman: 5 seconds
  • Sophomore, Juniors, Seniors, and Pros: 3 seconds

8. Coaching & Conduct Rules

Coaches

  • Only the Head Coach may stand, address referees, or call timeouts.
  • Assistant coaches must remain seated and silent during play except when managing the bench.
  • Head Coach with 1 technical foul = suspended remainder of game.
  • Head Coach with 2 technicals in a season = suspended for that game + next game.
  • 3 technicals = 1-year suspension.

Assistant Coaches

  • May not communicate with referees.
  • A technical foul = automatic suspension.

Players

  • 1 technical foul = suspension remainder of game (or next game if late).
  • 2 technicals in a season = 2-game suspension (carries over to next season if applicable).
  • 3 technicals in a season = 10-game suspension (possible ban).
  • Throwing a punch =Lifetime ban; coach suspended 1 game.

Parents & Spectators

  • Unruly behavior = ejection from gym.
  • Parent technical = ejection remainder of game; if unidentified, coach ejected.
  • 3 total parent technicals in a game = team forfeits.

9. Sportsmanship and Fair Play

 

  • Players play. Parents cheer. Coaches coach. Referees ref.
  • Coaches are accountable for the conduct of their players, parents, and assistants both on court and on school grounds.
  • No team may win by more than 30 points. If up by 20+, involve all players in scoring opportunities.
  • Coaches must report misconduct to the league administration.
  • Violations of fair play may result in suspension or team disqualification from playoffs.
