Assalamu-ai-aikum!
By the Grace of Allah, our AOBL official season has kicked off and is well underway! InshAllah we will be sending some Ottawa players to represent TeamEastern Canada at the North American Nasir Tournament being held this weekend (March 8-10). Please pray for the team's success in both soccer and basketball and their safe journey - Ameen! You can watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FxTq0Yl--uw
Our fellow khadim, Faateh Malik, has taken the time and effort to make a video of some of the basketball that goes on in the school property, please check it out at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cy9VHd4__ik
The following are the Power Rankings for the AOBL season in order of position from 1st to 4th: (based on subjective opinion from the basketball gurus):
(Position) Team Name [Season Record]:
(1) Amanat [2-3]: Team Amanat started off the season 0-3 and has surprised the league with two-straight commanding victories over the top teams in the league. They have begun to show an impeccable standard of teamwork and have forged a chemistry other teams currently lack. In their first game against Team Sadaqat, captain Muneer Khan took the load on his shoulders with 24 points, 4 steals and 13 rebounds. Daanish Malik has had breakthrough performances averaging a stellar 19.0 ppg (points per game) over the last two victories. Valeed Malik has been a consistent and dominant force in the paint, creating space for teammates and playing at a high level. Faizan Khan has continued to glue the team together with his effective defense and will to win in the game of basketball.
(2) Sadaqat [3-2]: Team Sadaqat has been the most consistent team in AOBL. They started the season strong and have remained as one of the dominant teams in the league. Captain Musaver Ahmed has taken the lead for the MVP case as the current scoring and blocks leader in AOBL. He is averaging 31.5 ppg in the last two games despite one of the games resulting in a loss to Team Amanat. Abdul Qudoos Chaudhry has remained as the most consistent player on the team averaging 14.7 ppg and 8.3 rpg (rebounds per game). Luqman "Lucky" Dawood played in the second game and once again came through with crucial points down the stretch against Team Rafaqat.
(3) Shujaat [3-2]: Team Shujaat has had a mediocre season with a 1-1 record in the last two games. Their first game came down to the final seconds while the second game was taken quite easily by Team Amanat. Despite the shooting slump of Captain Shakeel Nazir at 25% in the last two games, he has continued to show his emotional prowess and focus in the game as a young leader by continuing to lead the oldest team in the league. Qaid sahib Awais Mehmood has improved his rebounding the last few games but like the remainder of the team, needs to work on improving field goal percentage. Team Shujaat has shown potential as a tough team in the league, but must distribute the ball and take the right shots to improve their teamwork and offensive efficiency.
(4) Rafaqat [2-3]: Team Rafaqat has been in the slump with an 0-2 record the last two games despite starting the season strong with a 1-2 record. Captain Fawad Khan has continued to show signs of injury with a decrease in performance (despite 20.0 ppg) and will take time to return to full form. Saib Ahmed has continued to wreck havoc in the paint with both offensive and defensive rebounds and has improved scoring over the last few games. Faateh Malik has shown AOBL his long-range shooting but needs to be more involved in the offense in order for Team Rafaqat to make a stand among the other teams. Team Rafaqat has been the most inconsistent team by far but until Fawad Khan is in full form and Bilal Ahmed reunites as a key big man on the team, this team will need to find other ways of scoring the basketball. On a side note, Ehtesham Arif assisted Team Rafaqat in the absence of Fawad to make it a close game with Team Sadaqat with a league high 40 points - MashAllah!
The statistics for the last two games are as follows:
These results do not reflect an individual's statistics if he played on a team other than his own or is not currently part of a team; hence why some of the numbers for score may not add up
