Time after time, with linemen crashing together and dense fog rising off the turf at Oakdale High School, Walkersville running back Avery Ezell emerged through the bodies and the mist, nearly unstoppable.
Ezell set the tone for the Lions' 49-10 victory early on, bowling over defenders for tough yards up the middle and occasionally breaking loose for big gains. In all, he carried 23 times for 218 yards and four touchdowns before mercifully finding a spot on the sideline in the fourth quarter and watching the second string finish off the win to keep Walkersville unbeaten at 8-0.

"I know there are some great backs in the county, but Avery is as good as any of them," Oakdale coach Kurt Stein said. "They had three third-and-shorts where we played perfect defense and he just drug the guys for a first down. That happens sometimes when you play against really good players."

Ezell raced 31 yards for touchdown with 7:35 left in the first quarter to start a string of five-straight scoring possessions for the Lions to close out the half.

"My line was blocking really well and everybody had a great game," Ezell said. "It was a total team effort. We knew they were going to come out strong on their senior night and wouldn't give up and we had to match what they did."

Oakdale (1-7) opened the third quarter with an 80-yard drive capped by a one-yard touchdown run by Jay Molnar, who finished with 126 yards rushing, making it a 35-10 Lions lead.

The long drive momentarily brought the home crowd to life, but stopping Ezell and the Walkersville offense remained a problem.

The Lions answered three plays later with another Ezell touchdown and then picked off a pass from Oakdale quarterback Crosby Winters to set up another score and put any thoughts of a Bears comeback to rest.

"To their credit, they have some talented players over there and their kids kept fighting," Walkersville coach Joe Polce said. "To our kids' credit, after they scored we picked our game back up."
