Merchants take second in F-M

The Jamestown Miller Lite Merchants placed second at a tournament in Fargo-Moorhead last weekend, winning three of their four games.

 
 
The Merchants lost to the Champlain LoGators (Minnesota) in the championship game 5-3 on Sunday. The Merchants are 5-2 on the season and play the Mayville Redcaps in Fargo tonight.

 

Merchants 4,                                 St. Boniface Legionnaires 0

Former Jimmie Steve Hirchert fired a 2-hit shutout in the opener, a 4-0 win over St. Boniface Legionnaires (Minnesota).

Hirchert had eight strikeouts and walked just one.

Dan Ross went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Brady Anderson added two hits and scored. Nick Salentine was 1-for-4 with a run and RBI. Jared Purdy had a hit, run and two walks.

Merchants 4,                       Shakopee Indians 0

Luke Anderson followed Hirchert’s shutout with one of his own.

Anderson allowed just three hits to Shakopee, Minnesota in the 4-0 win.

The Merchants clubbed three home runs. Jared Purdy had a 2-run shot, while Dan Ross and Luke Anderson added solo shots. Anderson also had a double, while Bryan Erstad went 2-for-3 with a run and walk.

Merchants 5,                         Victoria Vices 1

The Merchants got another complete game in the semifinals as Brandon Baumgartner went the route in a 5-1 win.

Baumgartner gave up just one run on six hits with four strikeouts.

Joe Vannett led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Nick Salentine had two singles and scored twice. Brady Anderson scored two runs.

Champlain 5, Merchants 3

The Merchants outhit Champlain 7-3, but fell two runs short in the championship game.

Salentine (3-4) and Erstad (2-4, 2 RBI) led the Merchants, who scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh. Purdy singled and stole a base. Scott Stephenson had the other hit.

Greg Lunski allowed four runs in six innings and was saddled with the loss.
