The Altoona Football League

News

The ALTOONA FOOTBALL LEAGUE enters its 25th year as the 2019 season kicks off on Sunday, September 1st at historic Mansion Park Stadium in Altoona, PA.   The AFL is the premier youth football league in Central PA with more than 200 kids competing across 10 team & 2 leagues.  The AFL would like to thank our sponsors (see below), coaches, parents, kids, and the Altoona Area School District for their contributions in keeping the league strong in 2019 and for years to come.

2019 Sponsors include:

Sheetz // Coldwell Banker Town & Country Real Estate // Tom Dickey Law Offices // Provine Studios // M&T Bank // First Commonwealth Bank // Park Security Systems // ReMax Results Realty Group // University Orthopedics // UPMC Elite Orthopaedics

In 2019, the AFL (5th & 6th grade) will be moving to a draft format to fill the rosters of its 6 teams.  The main reasons for this change is to benefit the kids and to sustain the league for the future.  The goal of this change is to have balanced rosters of 25-30 players per roster.  Too often in recent years we have had teams w/ 35-40 kids and in the same season, other teams w/ 20-25 kids.  This leads to some kids never getting a chance to get on the field and other kids never getting a break.  The changes/closings of elementary schools in recent years impacted how we built our rosters.  We were able to institute a draft in our Rookie League last year and it worked really well.  We have not yet worked out all of the details, but hope to have those determined in the next couple months.  We understand that the first year of a draft will cause some confusion, however we also know that a draft is the best way to sustain the league for the next 25 years.  If you have any specific questions, please feel free to reach out to us at altoonafootball@gmail.com

Thank you for your continued support!

After a successful first season, the AFL "Rookie" League will return again in 2019.  This league is for kids in the Altoona Area School District entering grades 3 & 4.  This league is focused on teaching football fundamentals, participation and most importantly having fun.  Last year we had nearly 90 kids making up 4 teams in the league.  We learned a lot from our first year and plan to make some additional changes to improve the league in year two.  Keep checking the website and follow us on FaceBook for updates to the Rookie League.
