The Bronx Holy Flames opened their 2019-2020 season October 23rd with their first team practice under the hottest ABA coaching commodity, Connecticut resident, Lenny Sabia. The event drew a record number of players vying for a position on what is shaping up to be a high- powered group. “The first night player-coach bond and results were absolutely amazing” owner Von Wright expressed, and the much-anticipated hype is exactly what he wanted for his Flames. Assistant Head Coach Matt Melendez also debuted under Coach Sabia, and after practice Matt expressed that he is looking forward to learning a great deal under Sabia’s tutelage and hopes to further his coaching career to the next level.
As part of the newly rejuvenated Bronx Holy Flames agenda, Coach Sabia inserted the new on-court offensive and defensive programs as well as an off-court player compliance platform. Prior to the start of Monday’s practice Coach Sabia attended and served at the Helping Hands Food Bank at the local St. Jeromes Church where he was given a tour of the physical building and its homeless programs. Sabia described the experience as “eye opening,” and plans to lead his team in focusing on more community outreach with St. Jeromes.
During this off-season, the Flames owner Von Wright vigorously sought after and recruited what he and the other owners feel is the very best coach for the Bronx Holy Flames ABA team. Although last year’s team fell short of its goals, they are certain this season will be hugely successful. “Right now, we are clearly blessed to have Coach Sabia on board, on and off the floor.” Wright said.
Coach Sabia is extremely happy with the talent on the team. Whether returning, recruited, or walk-on, all the players are not only skilled on the floor, but also caring, well-mannered and willing to adapt to the new program. “This is going to be a stellar year for everyone…players, coaches, owners and fans. What a remarkable start to a great season of basketball!”
