With the coaching staff selection completed, head coach David Coates of CBS and assistant coaches Kevin Higgins of Gander and David McCarthy Corner Brook are excited to begin the process of player selection for the 2021 Canada Games.

The coaching staff has developed a three-year plan leading up to the Games, and it will be implemented immediately with the identification of players born in 2003 and later for the 2019 Provincial 15U Baseball Program. Players born in 2003 are considered overage players for this program, while players born in 2004 and later are age eligible.

The first step of the plan begins this summer with the coaching staff actively scouting various invitational and provincial tournaments. Then, in the fall of 2018, there will open tryouts in various regions of the province for the 2019 Provincial 15U Baseball Program. The tryout dates have not yet been finalized, but it is anticipated they will occur in late-September based on field availability. Updates to this process will be posted on the BNL Website as they become available, so all interested players should keep checking the BNL Website.

From these evaluations, a shortlist of 2019 15U-eligible players will be selected to work out in their home region at an indoor facility under coaching staff direction until about mid-April. There will be a winterball fee associated with a player’s acceptance to the program, as well as a fundraising component that all players will be expected to participate in. Funds generated under team-directed initiatives will go directly to offset team expenses of which a portion will be specifically related to player costs.

In mid-April, this group will come together for a full assessment and evaluation in St. John’s, and from there, the group will participate in an out-of-province tournament in late-May or early-June. It will be from this event that the final 15U team will be selected to prepare for competition in the National 15U Baseball Championship in Oshawa, August 22-25, 2019.

As the 2021 Canada Games process moves forward, additional information regarding what will occur for the 2020 and 2021 seasons will also be provided to all players interested in becoming involved in the 2021 Canada Games Program. Such information will be posted on the BNL Website at the appropriate future date.

Rookie House Tournament - Cancelled

Due to player availability the Rookie tournament scheduled for the Aug 10 weekend has been cancelled.

Great Sport Chase Lottery

SportNL has launched its first-ever online lottery. The Great Sport Chase will offer twelve weeks of draws, jackpots and fun for all those who participate.

Tickets go on sale on May 2, 2018 with the first draw taking place on May 17, 2018. Draws will then happen each Thursday on the NTV News Frist Edition.

“It’s so important to support and encourage physical activity, wellness and sport in this province and we hope this lottery will increase our capacity to do just that,” said Troy Croft, Executive Director of SportNL. “We are really excited to launch this lottery and feel confident that our sporting community along with the people of NL will enjoy the experience and excitement of this twelve-week event.”

This lottery promises to be entertaining, with weekly draws on NTV and an ever-growing jackpot. A one-of-a-kind deck of 45 sport cards has been created, with each card in the deck representing one of the Provincial Sport Organizations, who are members of Sport NL. Four of these decks will be used for the weekly contest: one “home deck” and three “away decks”. Each week, participants can buy a ticket to join that week’s Sport Chase.

The basics of The Great Sport Chase:
• One ticket holder will be randomly selected (each week) to be the “Sport Chaser” for that draw, winning 10% of the weeks total sales.
• The four decks will be shuffled independently, and placed on the playing surface
• The Sport Marshall will then turn up the top card in the “home deck.” The sport revealed becomes the “home sport” for that week’s draw and will receive 5% of the week’s total sales. That is the sport we will be chasing that week.
• The Sport Marshall then turns over the top card in each of the three “away decks.” If one or more of the revealed “away cards” match the “home sport,” a set percentage of that week’s sales is paid to the “Sport Chaser.”

“With the ability to purchase tickets online and witness the weekly Sports Chase on NTV each week, this lottery is accessible to everyone and we really encourage people to get involved,” said Croft. “Proceeds will go to support amateur sport in the province and the final jackpot has the potential to be quite large. It’s a win-win!”
