History & Mission: East End Flyers Track & Field Club

East End Flyers Track & Field Club History and Mission

In the spring of 1997, the East End “Flyers” was born as a collaborative effort of the Doris Miller Community Center and the C. Waldo Scott Center for HOPE.  The Flyers program was started with the goal of exposing children in Newport News' Southeast Community to the sport of track and field.

The first year began humbly with 12 young athletes ranging in age from 6 to 13 years old competing in local practice meets against other area track teams.  Over the years, the Flyers program has grown to average roughly 40 athletes per year, the team has competed in state, regional and national track & field championship meets, had numerous State and Regional champions and taken over a hundred athletes to the Amateur Athletic Union’s Junior Olympic Games.  In competing, our athletes have traveled throughout Virginia, as well as to Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee.

The "Flyers" track club provides athletic instruction in track and field to Hampton Roads area youth ages 5 to 18.  Kids are taught the importance of setting goals, being physically fit and competing in both sports and academics.  Our mission is to make a positive impact in the lives of area youth by reaching those that could be labeled as "at risk" or "socially/economically challenged," and providing the opportunity to compete, socialize, travel and learn skills that will enhance their physical fitness and personal growth.

Booster Club

The Booster Club was created at the beginning of the 1999 track season by the coaches and a small group of dedicated parents.  The growth and success of the team bought increased responsibilities and necessitated that there be additional fundraising to support team activities. The Booster Club holds administrative and fiscal duties in addition to those that follow:

Conceive, coordinate and manage all fundraising activities; Encourage and maintain high parent participation;

Administer the athletic assistance program; Act as liaison between coaches and parents for administrative issues; Coordinate and implement community service and outreach activities .

The Booster Club members are enthusiastic FLYERS advocates who work to make the Flyers experience successful and rewarding.  We encourage interested parents to get involved and help ensure the teams continued success.

Community Outreach

The East End Flyers Track & Field Club is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that includes an active Booster Club dedicated to improving the lives of those in our community.  This goal is carried out through the following annual activities:

Adopt-An-Athlete (full and partial athletic scholarships for those in need);

Holiday Blessings (the team participates in the Doris Miller Community Center’s Holiday Blessings program providing holiday gifts for children from the surrounding community).

Thanksgiving Baskets (the team assembles and delivers Thanksgiving baskets to families in need, as identified by the Doris Miller Community Center and the C Waldo Scott Center for HOPE).

These activities are included in the team’s annual operating budget and are financed through team fundraising.
