Fall 2018/Spring 2019 Season

Summary: The Gambrills Athletic Club’s 13U travel baseball team is holding player tryouts for the spring 2019 season.  The 13U team will play in a regional travel league and participate in approximately 8-10 tournaments throughout the year, culminating in a trip to compete at a major out of state tournament in July 2019.  The team will participate in ~50 games in 2019, and anyone considering trying out should expect to commit 3-4 days per week to games/practices in the spring. Additionally, the team will have a fall 2018 commitment to play in various local tournaments and scrimmages. Fall 2018 participation is expected, but flexibility is provided to allow players to compete in other sports; presence at any fall tournaments is required. Gambrills has one of, if not THE nicest fields in the county to play on. It is one of very few fields run by a private organization; meaning, teams decide when a practice/game is cancelled - not the county.

Coaching Philosophy: The head coach of Gambrills' 13U believes in balancing development, competition and fun for all players. Players expect to play, parents come to watch their kids, and the team expects to win.To that end, the team bats the lineup to ensure player participation; however, the lineup is built to put the team in a competitive position, so there are no guarantees on where a player will hit in the lineup. Playing time in general is divided relatively equal to all players regardless of talent, which is why it is so important to select the right 11/12 players. The coach believes players get better through practice and reps during games; how can a player get better if he/she is always on the bench? All players should expect to be benched at some point during the season, and possibly at least one inning per game. With 11 kids, there usually is only one player that gets benched more than one inning using this approach. The only exception to this is during championship games; some players may get benched more than others to put the team in the best position to win. While individuals will play in a balanced number of innings, there are no guarantees on positions. Players will be positioned based on their ability to help the team; not everyone can or should be starting shortstop or centerfield. ALL players are expected to pitch. If your kid is not a pitcher and makes the team, the expectation is that you will put time/effort into teaching them how to pitch outside of scheduled games and practices. The head coach believes it is in the best interests of the morale of the team and parents to be a team that wins 6/7 out of 10 games with everyone playing and contributing than winning 9/10 games with only the 9 best playing. The team has played better than .600 winning baseball the last two years using this approach.

Age: To be considered for the 13U 2019 spring team, players must have been born on or after 01 May 2005; they cannot turn 14 before 1 May 2018.
