The Good Shepherd Capitals are the 2013 / 2014 Senior Division Good Shepherd Hockey Champs

We are the Champions - The Capitals are the 2013/2014 Senior Division Champs - Congrats!

Good Shepherd Hockey Playoff Final - Saturday 5/10/14

We Are The Champions.......

Today (5/11/14), the Good Shepherd Capitals Hockey team became the Good Shepherd 2013 / 2014 Senior Division Hockey League Champions…..the coaches are very proud of the Capitals players - and want to thank the Capitals parents, families, and friends - who supported our team from October to the beginning of May. What an awesome season - what an awesome game - what awesome memories.

After playing great all year (we were 6-2-2), the Capitals were playing in the Championship Final game.

The Capitals defeated a very good Blackhawks team today to win the Good Shepherd Senior Division Hockey Championship and the Berry Cup!

Today's Championship game ended with a score of 4-0. It was a very well played, exciting game with good sportsmanship all around. The Capitals scored all 4 goals on the first line. On the first shift of the game Anthony A. scored on a breakaway to put us up 1-0. Anthony then scored again on another breakaway to give us a 2-0 lead. Nick T. added a goal and then Anthony A. scored his third goal of the game - a playoff hat trick to round out the scoring. Trent and the Cap's defense did the rest to earn a playoff final shutout. Once again, the third line played great defending against the Blackhawk's 1st line players when they pulled their goalie.  The Capitals were very well disciplined and played a smart hockey Championship game.  They took everything that they learned throughout the season and put it all together for this one final game.  A perfect ending to a great season.

We can not say enough about this team! After shaking hands and taking pictures with the Blackhawk's players and coaches, the Capitals began their Championship celebration. They raised the cup up high and took individual players photos with the cup as the coaches introduced each player and gave out championship hats. It was great seeing all the smiling faces as they celebrated with their friends and teammates - making memories that will last a lifetime (I hope all the parents got some good pictures).

It was a special season for all of us - one that the coaches will never forget - and we want to congratulate each and every player. It isn't everyday that you can be part of a championship team. Our goal as coaches was to teach the players about good sportsmanship and teamwork - learning and having fun playing the great game of hockey - and it looks like we were very successful. You played like champions all season long and now we can officially call the Capitals– the 2013 / 2014 Good Shepherd Senior Division Hockey League Champions – Congrats Caps – the hard work paid off – and you all deserve to be champs - as you are all winners on and off the rink!

As coaches, we are very proud of every player.  Congrats & good luck to all.  We finished the regular season with 6 wins 2 losses and 2 ties. We finished the playoffs with 3 wins.  Our final season record was 9 wins 2 losses and 2 ties in 13 games - Playoff Champions.  We scored 33 goals and only gave up 14 goals in 13 games.  That is the definition of teamwork!  But more importantly, it was the sportsmanship that you showed week in and week out that made the coaches the most proud.

Achievements:

- After losing the first two games of the season, the Capitals went undefeated in their next 11 games. 9 wins and 2 ties (if you count the 4 straight tournament wins, the Capitals went undefeated in their next 15 games, 13 wins and 2 ties).

- The Capitals were the Senior Division Turkey Bowl Tournament Champs.

- The Capitals were the Senior Division Christmas Holiday Tournament Champs.

- The Capitals finished the regular season in first place.

- The Capitals are now 2013/2014 Good Shepherd Senior League Hockey Champs.

- Most importantly, the Capitals showed great Sportsmanship and teamwork each and every week.

Team celebration / party / barbeque will be later this summer - we will be in touch with the date and time as well as when the Church award night will be.

In other words, if the league postpones the games during any particular week due to weather, league rules state that the games
that were postponed will be played the next Saturday - therefore pushing the schedule out. This scenario can happen several times
during a season - sometimes several weeks in a row - due to rain, snow and ice.  When this happens - the schedule above will be
adjusted accordingly.

Playoffs - The Capitals are in the Finals after a 4-2 Semi-Final Playoff Win

Good Shepherd Hockey Senior Division Playoffs - Game 2 Summary - Saturday 4/5/14

The Capitals beat the Blackhawks today to advance to the playoff finals. The Capitals will need to win 1 more game to earn the right to be the Berry Cup Winners. Today's game ended in a 4-2 victory for the Capitals. It was a very well played, exciting game. With the victory, the Capitals are now one win away from winning the championship.

The Capitals scored early on a goal by Anthony A. on the first shift of the game. Then the Blackhawks scored 2 straight power play goals to take a 2-1 lead. Time was running out for us and I could sense the the team was getting the feeling that we may lose the game. I had felt that the team gave a great effort and we were close to tying the game . So with 9 minutes left and a faceoff in the offensive zone in the 3rd period, our first line went out for the last time in the game. The kids talked strategy and Chris T told Nick T to win the faceoff to Anthony because they were triple teaming Nick all over the field. Nick won the next faceoff to Anthony and he buried the tying goal. We were back and the momentum had changed in a flash. 30 seconds later, Nick won another faceoff to Anthony and he passed it back to Nick who scored the 3rd goal of the game. And just like that, the Capitals were in the lead. Then, after the Blackhawks pulled the goalie, our 2nd line scored an open net goal by Andrew O to seal the victory.

The coaches were very impressed by the effort today by all lines. Today was a total team effort. Trent and the Defense played very well to earn a playoff victory.

The third line played a great game against 2nd and 1st line players. They have really helped the Capitals by shutting down the other teams.

We always say that we win as a team....and it took a total team effort to win this game....great job everybody! Both coaches are very proud of all the Capital players. Lets keep up the great work and effort in the finals.

As I see it, no-one can derail this Capitals train that we are on. Remember to keep your composure and do not let the other team take you off your game. We are in the finals and will be off for the next 3 weeks. We will schedule a practice and I will let you know when that will be.

Playoffs - The Caps Win Their First Playoff Game 2-1

Good Shepherd Hockey Senior Division Playoffs - Game 1 Summary - Saturday 3/22/14

What a great playoff hockey game........The Caps & Flames played a hard fought game. The Caps played great defensively and won 2-1 to advance to the next round of the Good Shepherd hockey playoffs.

Both teams played a great defensive game for the first period. The Caps scored first on the second line when Andrew Oakland buried his shot after some good passing. Then the second line made it 2 - 0 after the Flames goalie made a save on a shot that went up and over the goalie and two Caps (Andrew and Zachary S. ) scored a group goal by hitting the ball with there sticks at the same time. I asked who scored and they both were not sure of who it was ...since there was no video and we could not go to the video tape ...they did a game of ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS and after 3 rounds Andrew won so then I guess Andrew scored both goals.  But the Flames scored the next shift for the second line.  Trent made some excellent saves to limit the Flames to just 1 goal. The Caps defense was solid - giving the team our first playoff win.

We are all very proud of each and every player on this team...each one of you contributed to our team effort - which led to our victory!!!!

Playoff Hockey - Lets go Caps! We will be playing next Saturday March 29th at 1:20.

Capitals Clinch First Place!!!!!!

Game 10 review - Saturday 3/8/14

The Good Shepherd Capitals clinched 1st place today - and are now the Good Shepherd Senior League Regular Season Hockey Champs - Congratulations!

After today's 4-2 victory over the Blackhawks, the Caps now have 6 wins and 2 loses, 2 ties.

Today's victory was a total team effort....over a very solid Blackhawks team who played a great game. The Caps were missing 2 players today. As usual, our defense played very well. Our Goalie Trent was playing the first half of the game in a puddle and is still drying out. All 4 of our goals were results of hard work. We jumped on top early.  The first line scored in the first period as Chris T. scored after getting his own rebound to put the Capitals on the board. Then the first line scored again as Nick T. scored on a play that all 5 first liners had a hand in. The Blackhawks scored the next 2 goals to tie the game. Our third goal was scored by our third line, with Ben keeping the ball in the offensive zone and Toni working the boards as Adam delivered a beautiful pass to a wide open Dan Shay who shot a one timer to give the Capitals the lead. Then the Hawks pulled their goalie and Dan Shay scored his second goal of the game into an empty net to seal the victory and first place for the Capitals. It was a Great team and individual effort by all 15 players today.

Our focus when we began this season was to teach the kids about hockey, teamwork and sportsmanship. We set four team goals....to win the regular season championship, to win the Turkey Tournament, to win the Christmas Tournament and to win the Senior division Cup. We have successfully completed three of the four goals. We now shift our focus to the playoffs and try to capture the title by applying all that we have learned throughout the season. As we do this, we will continue to focus on the three basic rules we preach each and every week....learning how to become a better hockey player, being a great team-mate, and always showing good sportsmanship. More than anything - that is what makes a winner - not what the scoreboard shows, but how we feel about the game and the people who dedicate so much time to this wonderful sport. We started the season as individuals and lost our first two games. We have now become a team and are unbeaten in 12 straight games (which includes tournaments).  The players are not only working together, but they now trust each other and rely on one another.  They are making memories that will last a life time and we (the coaches and parents) are all very proud of our team - keep up the great work !  Congrats on your accomplishments.

Thank you to those who attended the Hockey League Mass Sunday 4/27/14 @ 3:30pm

Capitals win again...Great Team effort

Game 9 review - Saturday 3/1/14

The Capitals came out flying today against the Panthers. We had played them twice before during the regular season and wound up with a loss and a tie, but this time the Capitals came out on top. The Capitals improved their record to 5 wins and 2 losses and 2 ties, we are on a 7 game unbeaten streak.

This week the first line started strong with a breakaway goal on the first shift by Nick T. Then Adam scored his first regular season goal into an open net to put the Capitals up 2 - 0 and that was all we needed for a victory.

All of the Capitals played very well offensively and defensively....and most importantly, they all showed good sportsmanship. Trent U. played great in net, once again stopping every shot that was sent his way for a shutout - his third of the season.

I have to say that this was the best team effort of the season for the Capitals as every line played a great game.

Next week we have the late game at 2:40 which is our last game of the regular season......the coaches are very proud of all of the players efforts....keep up the good work and the great sportsmanship as we get ready to begin the playoffs.

Caps earn their second tie of the season

Game 8 review - Saturday 2/1/14

The Capitals tied for the second time this season - the final score was 2-2. The 1st goal of the game was scored by our 1st line - it was scored by Anthony A. after Nick T. took a slap shot that Anthony deflected into the net. The Storm came back with 2 goals on one shift. But the Caps scored a shorthanded goal by Jessie after he cleared the ball from center ice - as the ball rolling down to the goalie; it somehow bounced over the goalie and tied the game.

Great job by all of the Caps players. Great sportsmanship which is even more important than a victory. We have a bye next week so enjoy your weekend.

Capitals continue their winning ways in 2014

Game 7 review - Saturday 1/18/14

The Capitals continue to win - ringing in the New Year with another victory .  The Capitals defeated the Flames by a score of 6-1 in a very well played hockey game.  We now have 4 wins, 2 loses and a tie in 7 games - with 3 games left in the regular season.  Another great job by all.....

Again, the Capitals defense and our goalie Trent,  played very well. Anthony A scored a hat trick on his birthday!!!! Happy Birthday Anthony!!! All 6 goals were scored on the first line, Anthony got 3 , Nick T got 2, and Chris T scored 1.

Each week we seem to have different players moving in and out of the lineup as players have other commitments outside of hockey.....especially during the holidays - and each week it is a pleasure to coach and see these players play different positions and play on different lines.  It is because of these player's ability to adapt to these situations that we are winning....as teamwork and cooperation have prevailed.  As coaches, we are very proud of these players - who continue to work hard and show great sportsmanship - while learning and playing this great sport.  Thank you!

** Quick shout out to Brendon who went down after getting hit in the leg by a stick in the third period.  I just heard that Brendon went to the Hospital and received 5 stiches and should be back in action in 2 to 3 weeks. We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Hockey New Year

** A message from the coach......

Hello Capitals Parents and Players.  Merry Christmas!

WOW.....what a way to end the first half of the season. Look out 2014, the Capitals are hot and ready to continue playing great hockey.

I am really excited about our team.  We began the season in late September as individuals and have become a team in just a few short weeks.  There are many players who I have never had the privilege to coach before, but after a slow start, the kids have really turned things around and have become a fun team made up of very good hockey players.  We are on a 4 game unbeaten streak and we have won both the Turkey and Christmas Tournaments.  As we have become better hockey players, we have also became good teammates and have learned about good sportsmanship.  So we close out 2013, I want to tell you all I am very proud to be your hockey coach and very proud of the way you play the sport and support each other.

Our 2014 goals will be to try to finish in first place and to bring home the Barry Cup - but most importantly - we want to continue to build Teamwork and Good Sportsmanship while playing this great sport.  When all of our players are able to attend a game, we are very hard to beat. Keep up the great job. I am very proud of each and every one of you.

I want to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Hockey New Year.

Enjoy the holidays with your family and friends. I am looking forward to hockey in the new year.

The Capitals are the Christmas Tournament Champs

Christmas Tournament Champs - Tournament Review - Saturday 12/21/13

Congrats to the Capitals players on becoming the 2013 Good Shepherd Hockey League Christmas Tournament Champs.

In summary, the Good Shepherd Hockey League holds an annual Christmas Hockey Tournament. It is a great time - a round robin tournament in which the winning team receives candy. Once again, our motto was lets give it our best and see how we do.

Well we did great once again - winning our second tournament in three weeks. Once again, all of the players played awesome......and we had so much fun...winning back to back tournaments is something we will all remember for a long time.

In Summary, we won two games - the first in a shootout - and then won the Championship game - Great job by all.

In detail - in the first game, the Capitals beat the Flames in a shootout. Neither team was able to score in regulatio (0-0) so we went to a shootout.  The shootout went 8 rounds - meaning the Flames had 8 shooters and the Capitals had 8 shooters.  The game winning goal was scored by Dan - our second line defenseman - what a great shot - great job Dan - and our goalie Trent stopped all 8 of the Flames shootout shooters. So we advanced to the finals with a 1-0 victory.

In the tournament finals, the Capitals played the first place team - the Panthers - the same team we played in the Thanksgiving Tournament finals and the Capitals won 2-1 on goals by Jessie & Anthony A.  The Capitals Defense played great in both games and our goalie Trent was awesome. Both teams played exciting end-to-end hockey. It was a great game to watch.

The Capitals scored 3 goals in the tournament and only gave up 1 goal. Great job by everyone! That is great teamwork!

Season Summary to date: In 2013, during the regular season - our team has 3 wins, 2 loses and 1 tie (we are currently in second place), and has won both the Thanksgiving & Christmas Tournaments (4 straight tournament wins). We could not be prouder!

There is still a lot more hockey to play in 2014, more to learn, and lots more to do! So lets continue to make memories and have fun playing hockey!

We will see everybody on January 4th for our next game.

Christmas Tournament Results:

12:40pm - Senior Semi-Finals - #2 Capitals vs #5 Flames
Capitals won 1-0

3:30pm - Senior Finals - #2 Capitals vs #1 Panthers
Capitals won 2-1

Capitals earn their third victory of the season

Game 6 review - Saturday 12/7/13
The Capitals won for the third time this season - a 2-1 victory...we are on a roll as we have won 3 games in a row. Capitals are now 3 wins, 2 loses, 1 tie.

The 1st goal of the game was scored by our 1st line - it was scored by Anthony A. off a nice pass from Nick T.

The 2nd goal was scored by our 1st line - Brendan scored after Nick T made a nice play to keep the ball in the zone.

We held our opponent to 1 goal  - a credit to our team defense and our goalie Trenton.

Great job by all of the Capitals players. Great sportsmanship which is even more important than the victory. The 2nd line players played great when the other team pulled their goalie.

So last week we won the Turkey Tournament and this week we win our 3rd straight game.

Next weeks game is at 2:40.

Congrats to the Capitals - the 2014 Good Shepherd Turkey Bowl Champs

Turkey Bowl Champs - Tournament Review - Saturday 11/30/13

Congrats to the Capitals players on becoming the 2013 Good Shepherd Hockey League Thanksgiving Tournament Champs.

In summary, the Good Shepherd Hockey League holds an annual Thanksgiving Weekend Hockey Tournament. It is a great time - a round robin tournament in which the winning team receives movie tickets. Our motto was lets give it our best and see how we do.

Well we did great - All of the players played awesome......and we had so much fun...something we will all remember for a long time...and showed good sportsmanship in both games. It was also the first time all season we had a full team. It was nice to have every member of the team at a game.

In Summary, we won two games - both in shootouts - and won the Championship as our goalie Trent did not give up a single goal in either shootout.  Great job by all.

In detail - in the first game, the Capitals beat the Blackhawks in a shootout. The score in regulation was 2-2. Our first line got the scoring going when Nick T scored on a great pass from Chris T. for the first goal of the game. The second goal was scored by Adam on the third line. In the shootout the Capitals scored first on a goal by Nick T. and Trent put up a wall and stopped all three opponents attempts.  So we advanced to the finals.

In the tournament finals, the Capitals played the first place team - the Panthers. Once again, the Capitals needed to go to a shootout to win. The Capitals first line came up big.. Brendan made a nice pass from the corner to Nick T. and Nick went top shelf. Our Defense played great in both games and our goalie Trent was awesome. In the shootout the Capitals got a goal from Zach M. from the second line who is still in shock!!!!!!!. Both teams played exciting end-to-end hockey. It was a great game to watch. The Capitals scored 3 goals in the tournament and gave up 3 goals. A Great job Everyone! That is great teamwork! The difference was the 2 shootout gaols that we scored.

Capitals earn their first Tie of the season

Game 5 review - Saturday 11/23/13

The Capitals tied their first game of this season - a 1-1 tie.   We now have 2 wins 2 loses and 1 tie.  Once again we were missing 3 players. After being down 1-0 in the 3rd period, the Capitals called time out and pulled the goalie on the third line. The coach called on Nick T to be the extra player and he did not disappoint. He won the face off and pushed the ball ahead. His stick was wrapped behind him and he made a nice play to get the stick back in position and blast a shot that hit the goalie and rolled up over his shoulder for a goal. Great job by all of the Capitals players. Great sportsmanship which is even more important than the victory.

Our next game will be the Turkey Tournament on Saturday after Thanksgiving.......time TBD.

The coaches would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving !!!

Capitals earn their second victory of the season

Game 4 review - Saturday 11/9/13

The Capitals won for the 2nd time this season with a 2-0 win....We now have 2 wins and 2 loses. All 3 lines played well in our victory. The first line opened up the scoring with some nice passes. Chris passed to Anthony who then passed to Nick, who put the ball in the net. The 2nd goal was scored by the 3rd line as Ben scored into an open net.

Great job by the whole team. The 3rd line came up big when the Storm pulled their goalie and put a first line player out there.

Trent and the defense played well as we secured our 2nd shutout of the season.

Great job by all of the Capitals players. The team is playing so well, it is hard to believe we lost the first 2 games. Let's keep in mind that the most important thing is not the score....it is about having fun, teamwork and learning about this great game.

We are off next week because we have a bye.

CAPS Win - The Capitals win their first regular season hockey game

Game 3 review - Saturday 11/2/13

The CAPS Win! This game really was a hard fought game.....The Capitals scored 2 goals in our first win of the season. 2-0. We are now 1 win and 2 loses. Both coaches are very proud of all of the players. Great job team!

To start the game we were missing 1 player (which is much better that the 5 kids missing lately). We got on the board late in the first period when Zachary M. sent a pass across the goalmouth and Andrew touched it in for the goal.  In the second period Zach S. scored on a rebound and we were up by 2 goals, that is the way the game ended. Goaltender Trent stood tall and made some nice saves to keep the Flames off the scoreboard for our first "SHUTOUT" of the season. The "D" really helped out today. All three lines played great.

It is fun to see the kids starting to have a little chemistry and hear them all talking hockey together.

Please feel free to reach out to either coach if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you

Capitals lose a close game

Game 2 review - Saturday 10/26/13

The Capitals were missing 5 players as they took on the Blackhawks for our second game of the season in a very well played game against a very good team. The Capitals played great and I am very proud of their efforts even in a loss. They all showed sportsmanship and built some team character today. They have to keep in mind that hockey is fun...win or lose.

Getting to the game, The lines were all different since we were short 5 kids, the Capitals traded goals with the Blackhawks, trailing 1 - 0 our second line scored with a nice goal by Ben.   After the Blackhawks scored to take a 2 - 1 lead, with 2 minutes left the Caps pulled the goalie and Chris scored what appeared to be the game tying goal but it was disallowed after the refs got together and said he was in the crease.

Trent played strong in net....however, the Capitals lost for the second time this season...

The coaches were very impressed with the effort the team gave on Saturday. We feel that both games this year could have been won if we had a full team. We love some of the play from the 3rd line players that had to play 2nd line. Hopefully we can re-group and start a new winning streak. Next weeks game is at 1:20 and please come ready to play.

Capitals lose first game

Game 1 review - Saturday 10/19/13

On what was a great weather day for the first game of the season, the Capitals fell a bit short. The Capitals played well but with 3 seconds left to go in the game, the Panthers scored to send the Capitals down in defeat. We were short 2 first liners so that created a total change in the lines. 2 second line players had to move up to first line and then 2 third line players had to move to the second line. Even with all of the changes, the Capitals hung in there - and we almost got a tie. We were down 1 - 0 in the first period - but came back to tie the score when Nick  T. scored on a pulled goalie situation in the third period to make it a 1-1 game. Our goalie Trenton made some great saves to keep us in the game. The kids played great and we are very happy with the effort, especially since some of the players were playing on different lines. They all showed great sportsmanship as we built some team character today......nice job! This is a learning experience and I hope the kids all learn from this.

Capitals tie first ever PRE-Season hockey game as a team

PRE-SEASON - Saturday 10/12/13

The Capitals scored 2 goals in our Pre-Season game and tied the Blackhawks 2-2 in our first pre-season game. Both coaches are very proud of the players - Great job!

The team got their feet wet with a very well played hockey game. With only 11 players and a goalie, we had to move the players on different lines. But this was my first look at some of the kids and I was very happy. Zack M and Nick T scored our 2 goals and Matt C played well in net for the tie. Everyone did a great job, especially when it came to touching up and staying on-sides.

The coaches cannot say enough about the team's efforts. The kids showed great sportsmanship cheering and supporting each other and listening to the refs. We feel they have already come a long way since our first practice. We hope to teach them more about playing hockey, sportsmanship, and teamwork....and hope to make the season an enjoyable, fun, learning experience for everyone involved.

Please feel free to reach out to either coach if you have any questions or concerns.

Next week we play our first regular season game at 1:20 vs the Panthers.

Volunteers are needed whenever we have the last (2:40 pm) game of the day

The good news is - we will never have to setup the boards in the morning before our game like you did when you played in the junior division.  However, whenever our team has the last game of the day (the 2:40 pm game), we are required to put away the boards, nets and benches. I will ask the entire team for their help - win or lose - it is our responsibility as a team to assist helping breakdown the boards and put everything away before the parking lot begins to fill up with Church goers. Everyone's help and assistance would be very much appreciated. We will only have to do this 5 times this season. As part of our team building process (and sportsmanship), if everyone chips in and works together - this should take less than 5 minutes. I want to thank everyone in advance for your anticipated cooperation.
