Good Shepherd Hockey Playoff Final - Saturday 5/10/14
Today (5/11/14), the Good Shepherd Capitals Hockey team became the Good Shepherd 2013 / 2014 Senior Division Hockey League Champions…..the coaches are very proud of the Capitals players - and want to thank the Capitals parents, families, and friends - who supported our team from October to the beginning of May. What an awesome season - what an awesome game - what awesome memories.
After playing great all year (we were 6-2-2), the Capitals were playing in the Championship Final game.
Today's Championship game ended with a score of 4-0. It was a very well played, exciting game with good sportsmanship all around. The Capitals scored all 4 goals on the first line. On the first shift of the game Anthony A. scored on a breakaway to put us up 1-0. Anthony then scored again on another breakaway to give us a 2-0 lead. Nick T. added a goal and then Anthony A. scored his third goal of the game - a playoff hat trick to round out the scoring. Trent and the Cap's defense did the rest to earn a playoff final shutout. Once again, the third line played great defending against the Blackhawk's 1st line players when they pulled their goalie. The Capitals were very well disciplined and played a smart hockey Championship game. They took everything that they learned throughout the season and put it all together for this one final game. A perfect ending to a great season.
We can not say enough about this team! After shaking hands and taking pictures with the Blackhawk's players and coaches, the Capitals began their Championship celebration. They raised the cup up high and took individual players photos with the cup as the coaches introduced each player and gave out championship hats. It was great seeing all the smiling faces as they celebrated with their friends and teammates - making memories that will last a lifetime (I hope all the parents got some good pictures).
It was a special season for all of us - one that the coaches will never forget - and we want to congratulate each and every player. It isn't everyday that you can be part of a championship team. Our goal as coaches was to teach the players about good sportsmanship and teamwork - learning and having fun playing the great game of hockey - and it looks like we were very successful. You played like champions all season long and now we can officially call the Capitals– the 2013 / 2014 Good Shepherd Senior Division Hockey League Champions – Congrats Caps – the hard work paid off – and you all deserve to be champs - as you are all winners on and off the rink!

Our Next Game will be the Playoff Finals against the Blackhawks Saturday May 10th @ 1:20pm

Playoffs - The Capitals are in the Finals after a 4-2 Semi-Final Playoff Win
The Capitals scored early on a goal by Anthony A. on the first shift of the game. Then the Blackhawks scored 2 straight power play goals to take a 2-1 lead. Time was running out for us and I could sense the the team was getting the feeling that we may lose the game. I had felt that the team gave a great effort and we were close to tying the game . So with 9 minutes left and a faceoff in the offensive zone in the 3rd period, our first line went out for the last time in the game. The kids talked strategy and Chris T told Nick T to win the faceoff to Anthony because they were triple teaming Nick all over the field. Nick won the next faceoff to Anthony and he buried the tying goal. We were back and the momentum had changed in a flash. 30 seconds later, Nick won another faceoff to Anthony and he passed it back to Nick who scored the 3rd goal of the game. And just like that, the Capitals were in the lead. Then, after the Blackhawks pulled the goalie, our 2nd line scored an open net goal by Andrew O to seal the victory.
The coaches were very impressed by the effort today by all lines. Today was a total team effort. Trent and the Defense played very well to earn a playoff victory.
We always say that we win as a team....and it took a total team effort to win this game....great job everybody! Both coaches are very proud of all the Capital players. Lets keep up the great work and effort in the finals.
As I see it, no-one can derail this Capitals train that we are on. Remember to keep your composure and do not let the other team take you off your game. We are in the finals and will be off for the next 3 weeks. We will schedule a practice and I will let you know when that will be.
Playoffs - The Caps Win Their First Playoff Game 2-1
Both teams played a great defensive game for the first period. The Caps scored first on the second line when Andrew Oakland buried his shot after some good passing. Then the second line made it 2 - 0 after the Flames goalie made a save on a shot that went up and over the goalie and two Caps (Andrew and Zachary S. ) scored a group goal by hitting the ball with there sticks at the same time. I asked who scored and they both were not sure of who it was ...since there was no video and we could not go to the video tape ...they did a game of ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS and after 3 rounds Andrew won so then I guess Andrew scored both goals. But the Flames scored the next shift for the second line. Trent made some excellent saves to limit the Flames to just 1 goal. The Caps defense was solid - giving the team our first playoff win.
We are all very proud of each and every player on this team...each one of you contributed to our team effort - which led to our victory!!!!

Capitals win again...Great Team effort
The Capitals came out flying today against the Panthers. We had played them twice before during the regular season and wound up with a loss and a tie, but this time the Capitals came out on top. The Capitals improved their record to 5 wins and 2 losses and 2 ties, we are on a 7 game unbeaten streak.
This week the first line started strong with a breakaway goal on the first shift by Nick T. Then Adam scored his first regular season goal into an open net to put the Capitals up 2 - 0 and that was all we needed for a victory.
All of the Capitals played very well offensively and defensively....and most importantly, they all showed good sportsmanship. Trent U. played great in net, once again stopping every shot that was sent his way for a shutout - his third of the season.
I have to say that this was the best team effort of the season for the Capitals as every line played a great game.
Next week we have the late game at 2:40 which is our last game of the regular season......the coaches are very proud of all of the players efforts....keep up the good work and the great sportsmanship as we get ready to begin the playoffs.
Caps earn their second tie of the season
The Capitals tied for the second time this season - the final score was 2-2. The 1st goal of the game was scored by our 1st line - it was scored by Anthony A. after Nick T. took a slap shot that Anthony deflected into the net. The Storm came back with 2 goals on one shift. But the Caps scored a shorthanded goal by Jessie after he cleared the ball from center ice - as the ball rolling down to the goalie; it somehow bounced over the goalie and tied the game.
Great job by all of the Caps players. Great sportsmanship which is even more important than a victory. We have a bye next week so enjoy your weekend.
Capitals continue their winning ways in 2014
The Capitals continue to win - ringing in the New Year with another victory . The Capitals defeated the Flames by a score of 6-1 in a very well played hockey game. We now have 4 wins, 2 loses and a tie in 7 games - with 3 games left in the regular season. Another great job by all.....

The Capitals are the Christmas Tournament Champs
Congrats to the Capitals players on becoming the 2013 Good Shepherd Hockey League Christmas Tournament Champs.
In summary, the Good Shepherd Hockey League holds an annual Christmas Hockey Tournament. It is a great time - a round robin tournament in which the winning team receives candy. Once again, our motto was lets give it our best and see how we do.
Well we did great once again - winning our second tournament in three weeks. Once again, all of the players played awesome......and we had so much fun...winning back to back tournaments is something we will all remember for a long time.
In the tournament finals, the Capitals played the first place team - the Panthers - the same team we played in the Thanksgiving Tournament finals and the Capitals won 2-1 on goals by Jessie & Anthony A. The Capitals Defense played great in both games and our goalie Trent was awesome. Both teams played exciting end-to-end hockey. It was a great game to watch.
Season Summary to date: In 2013, during the regular season - our team has 3 wins, 2 loses and 1 tie (we are currently in second place), and has won both the Thanksgiving & Christmas Tournaments (4 straight tournament wins). We could not be prouder!
We will see everybody on January 4th for our next game.

Capitals earn their third victory of the season
The 1st goal of the game was scored by our 1st line - it was scored by Anthony A. off a nice pass from Nick T.
The 2nd goal was scored by our 1st line - Brendan scored after Nick T made a nice play to keep the ball in the zone.
We held our opponent to 1 goal - a credit to our team defense and our goalie Trenton.
Great job by all of the Capitals players. Great sportsmanship which is even more important than the victory. The 2nd line players played great when the other team pulled their goalie.
So last week we won the Turkey Tournament and this week we win our 3rd straight game.
Congrats to the Capitals - the 2014 Good Shepherd Turkey Bowl Champs
Turkey Bowl Champs - Tournament Review - Saturday 11/30/13
Congrats to the Capitals players on becoming the 2013 Good Shepherd Hockey League Thanksgiving Tournament Champs.

Well we did great - All of the players played awesome......and we had so much fun...something we will all remember for a long time...and showed good sportsmanship in both games. It was also the first time all season we had a full team. It was nice to have every member of the team at a game.
In the tournament finals, the Capitals played the first place team - the Panthers. Once again, the Capitals needed to go to a shootout to win. The Capitals first line came up big.. Brendan made a nice pass from the corner to Nick T. and Nick went top shelf. Our Defense played great in both games and our goalie Trent was awesome. In the shootout the Capitals got a goal from Zach M. from the second line who is still in shock!!!!!!!. Both teams played exciting end-to-end hockey. It was a great game to watch. The Capitals scored 3 goals in the tournament and gave up 3 goals. A Great job Everyone! That is great teamwork! The difference was the 2 shootout gaols that we scored.

Capitals earn their first Tie of the season
Game 5 review - Saturday 11/23/13
Our next game will be the Turkey Tournament on Saturday after Thanksgiving.......time TBD.
Capitals earn their second victory of the season
The Capitals won for the 2nd time this season with a 2-0 win....We now have 2 wins and 2 loses. All 3 lines played well in our victory. The first line opened up the scoring with some nice passes. Chris passed to Anthony who then passed to Nick, who put the ball in the net. The 2nd goal was scored by the 3rd line as Ben scored into an open net.
Great job by the whole team. The 3rd line came up big when the Storm pulled their goalie and put a first line player out there.
Trent and the defense played well as we secured our 2nd shutout of the season.
CAPS Win - The Capitals win their first regular season hockey game
The CAPS Win! This game really was a hard fought game.....The Capitals scored 2 goals in our first win of the season. 2-0. We are now 1 win and 2 loses. Both coaches are very proud of all of the players. Great job team!
To start the game we were missing 1 player (which is much better that the 5 kids missing lately). We got on the board late in the first period when Zachary M. sent a pass across the goalmouth and Andrew touched it in for the goal. In the second period Zach S. scored on a rebound and we were up by 2 goals, that is the way the game ended. Goaltender Trent stood tall and made some nice saves to keep the Flames off the scoreboard for our first "SHUTOUT" of the season. The "D" really helped out today. All three lines played great.
It is fun to see the kids starting to have a little chemistry and hear them all talking hockey together.
Please feel free to reach out to either coach if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you
Capitals lose a close game
The Capitals were missing 5 players as they took on the Blackhawks for our second game of the season in a very well played game against a very good team. The Capitals played great and I am very proud of their efforts even in a loss. They all showed sportsmanship and built some team character today. They have to keep in mind that hockey is fun...win or lose.
Getting to the game, The lines were all different since we were short 5 kids, the Capitals traded goals with the Blackhawks, trailing 1 - 0 our second line scored with a nice goal by Ben. After the Blackhawks scored to take a 2 - 1 lead, with 2 minutes left the Caps pulled the goalie and Chris scored what appeared to be the game tying goal but it was disallowed after the refs got together and said he was in the crease.
Trent played strong in net....however, the Capitals lost for the second time this season...
The coaches were very impressed with the effort the team gave on Saturday. We feel that both games this year could have been won if we had a full team. We love some of the play from the 3rd line players that had to play 2nd line. Hopefully we can re-group and start a new winning streak. Next weeks game is at 1:20 and please come ready to play.
Capitals lose first game
On what was a great weather day for the first game of the season, the Capitals fell a bit short. The Capitals played well but with 3 seconds left to go in the game, the Panthers scored to send the Capitals down in defeat. We were short 2 first liners so that created a total change in the lines. 2 second line players had to move up to first line and then 2 third line players had to move to the second line. Even with all of the changes, the Capitals hung in there - and we almost got a tie. We were down 1 - 0 in the first period - but came back to tie the score when Nick T. scored on a pulled goalie situation in the third period to make it a 1-1 game. Our goalie Trenton made some great saves to keep us in the game. The kids played great and we are very happy with the effort, especially since some of the players were playing on different lines. They all showed great sportsmanship as we built some team character today......nice job! This is a learning experience and I hope the kids all learn from this.
Capitals tie first ever PRE-Season hockey game as a team
PRE-SEASON - Saturday 10/12/13
The Capitals scored 2 goals in our Pre-Season game and tied the Blackhawks 2-2 in our first pre-season game. Both coaches are very proud of the players - Great job!
The team got their feet wet with a very well played hockey game. With only 11 players and a goalie, we had to move the players on different lines. But this was my first look at some of the kids and I was very happy. Zack M and Nick T scored our 2 goals and Matt C played well in net for the tie. Everyone did a great job, especially when it came to touching up and staying on-sides.
The coaches cannot say enough about the team's efforts. The kids showed great sportsmanship cheering and supporting each other and listening to the refs. We feel they have already come a long way since our first practice. We hope to teach them more about playing hockey, sportsmanship, and teamwork....and hope to make the season an enjoyable, fun, learning experience for everyone involved.
Please feel free to reach out to either coach if you have any questions or concerns.

Volunteers are needed whenever we have the last (2:40 pm) game of the day
The good news is - we will never have to setup the boards in the morning before our game like you did when you played in the junior division. However, whenever our team has the last game of the day (the 2:40 pm game), we are required to put away the boards, nets and benches. I will ask the entire team for their help - win or lose - it is our responsibility as a team to assist helping breakdown the boards and put everything away before the parking lot begins to fill up with Church goers. Everyone's help and assistance would be very much appreciated. We will only have to do this 5 times this season. As part of our team building process (and sportsmanship), if everyone chips in and works together - this should take less than 5 minutes. I want to thank everyone in advance for your anticipated cooperation.
