  • Regular season games played every Sunday until the end of August (Off Long Weekends) - 9AM - 12:30PM (some permits are until 12pm)
  • Playoffs - format is TBD, typically Round Robin, followed by a championship game, though we are trying to work in some consolation finals
  • ~15 players per team - Jersey and Hat are provided (you keep the hat)
  • Age 35+ (In your 35th year)
  • You can request to play with a friend in the league, or someone you are signing up with. The league will typically honour this request in year 1, however, mid-season changes are possible, at the league's discretion, to try and maintain a reasonable competitive balance
  • Most games played at Mohawk Sports Park in Hamilton - 1100 Mohawk Rd E, Hamilton, ON L8T 2S4 - Diamonds 4, 5 & 6 - sometimes 2
  • You are required to provide your own batting helmet, glove, bat, and cleats - rubber only unless pitching, though rubber still preferred - Baseball pants are required
  • Come out and meet a great group of players of mixed skill level, with a good balance between competition and sportsmanship - Some baseball experience is recommended

Last updated: 16Apr2024

Hobo is considering the creation of a Reserve Player List (aka subs, poolies etc.) for the 2024 season. Details are being finalized, however, with access to reserve players, teams would draft 15 players instead of the typical 16, and leverage the Reserve Players to support teams with lower attendance.  Stay Tuned to the website for updates on the Reserve List.

A Perfect Season!

Congratulations to both the Nationals and Tigers for making it to this year's final round on Sept 24th, held in Caledonia.  The Nationals came away with the win, defeating the Tigers 12-4.

The Nationals went 14-0 in the regular season to capture the Chuck Beaudoin Memorial Trophy, and went 3-0 in the playoffs to add the Phil Beaudoin Championship Trophy, for the first perfect season including playoffs in HOBO's 38 year history.

Rule Clarification - Runner for the Catcher

With less than two outs, a subsititute runner for the catcher is covered by the same rules as any other courtesy runner.  They may not steal a base, but may ony advance on a hit ball, a past ball or wild pitch.

Once two outs have been recorded, the runner now falls under the catcher courtesy runner rule, and the substitute runner (typically the last out) may steal a base at their own peril.

Message to all new players

This message is intended to clarify and answer a number of questions raised by our new players for this year.

No aluminum bats are allowed, wood only

No metal cleats for any player other than when pitching, plastic/rubber cleats are preferred

All players are to provide their own helmet.  All helmets to have a minimum of one ear flap

One set of catcher equipment is provided for each team

Thanks,

HOBO Executive

One of HOBO's recently retired members, Bill "Rooster" Ste. Marie, passed away on Nov 3rd at the age of 82.  Bill was passionate about baseball, and despite having the longest commute of any player in HOBO (Wingham to Hamilton), he was almost always the first one at the park.

Bill Ste. Marie Wingham, Ontario Obituary

Bill Ste. Marie

At Grey Bruce Health Services, Owen Sound on Thursday, November 3rd, 2022, Bill Ste. Marie of Clifford passed away at the age of 82.
Cherished dad of Shelley Haines of Wingham and the late Kevin Ste. Marie who predeceased him on June 28, 2022. Dear grandpa of Sheena and Marshall Haines of Wingham and Ethan Ste. Marie (Skye) of London. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents George & Jean (Elliott) Ste. Marie, aunt Doris Adams, brother Andy Ste. Marie, dearest friend Isobel Larson and many other aunts and uncles.
Bill was a life-long member of the Local 793 International Union of Operating Engineers for over 40 years, working on and paving many roads in the area. This was a job that he was very fortunate to share with his son Kevin and they both loved to remind you which roads they paved and worked on while out driving. The one constant in Bill’s life was his love of baseball. He played with the Hamilton Oldtimers Baseball Organization (HOBO) until he was 79. He was very much looking forward to playing until he was 80, however the pandemic hit and his team was unable to continue. The baseball field was a place that held many wonderful memories for Bill and he has now hung up his cleats.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 12th, 2022 at the Wroxeter Cemetery at 12:00 noon followed by a Celebration of Bill’s life at the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 180 in Wingham from 1:00-4:00 p.m. with words of remembrance at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Seniors Mental Health Program (cheques payable to the Canadian Mental Health Association) or a charity of choice would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
