Axcess Baseball Coverage of March 31st Game

Ken Kortright State Farm Game of the Week: North Babylon’s Bats Come to Life in 13-7 Win Over Hills East

North Babylon had a strong season last year, but Coach Steve Corrado noted that they hurt themselves with their failure to secure more series sweeps, which impacted their playoff seeding.

So far, so good.

The Bulldogs pulled off the series sweep against a difficult Hills East team on Friday afternoon in the final day of March. They had won the first game, 1-0, on a walk-off single in the eighth inning. Chris Stumpf earned the win in relief. They won Game 2, 4-2, behind a strong pitching performance by Dennis Kelly with Stumpf notching the save. He started and earned the W today – working around plenty of traffic on the bases but also making the big pitches when he needed to.

His final pitching line was 4 innings, 7 hits, 3 ER, 3 BB and 2 Ks. He was relieved by Ariel Nunez who pitched the final 3 innings in relief.

The game was put out of reach by North Babylon in the fourth inning, prior to that it had the makings of a back-and-forth thriller despite the poor weather.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, as they took advantage of command issues by Hills East’s starting pitcher, Mason Kappell. Stumpf singled to lead off the game. Isaiah Gutierrez and Eric Schulteisz were hit by pitches to load the bases. Hayden Magliano ripped a two-run double to left center field to make it 2-0 before you could blink. Dennis Kelly reached on an error by the third baseman to make it 3-0. After a strikeout and a bloop single by Jordan Konig, Kappell got a strikeout and an infield pop to end the inning.

Hills East got one back right away, as leadoff batter Joey Castro showed his wheels with a perfectly placed bunt that was thrown away so he advanced to second. Connor Bunce drew a walk and Aubrey Jean-Louis scored Castro with a ground out to second to make it 3-1.

In the top half of the second, North Babylon went back to work. Stumpf ripped his second hit in as many innings, and he scored on Schulteisz’s double to right field to make it 4-1. After an error by the third baseman, Dennis Kelly drove in the fifth run of the game with an RBI ground out.

Just when it appeared it make get out of hand, Hills East was able to bounce back and get a single by Luke Villa, a walk and a HBP to load the bases for Connor Bunce. The shortstop ripped a two-run single to left field to make it 5-3. It looked like we were in store for a true shootout.

The Bulldogs were able to respond quickly. After the first batter was retired, the next two batters reached on errors and Stumpf walked to load the bases and Hills East went to the bullpen, calling on David Harris. The senior walked Gutierrez to bring in a run and the next batter, Eric Schulteisz, grounded out to shortstop to bring home another run and make it 7-3.

In the home half of the fourth, Stumpf got Jean-Louis to ground out to second base to start the inning, but Jake Strow singled to right. After a strikeout, Luke Villa ripped an RBI single to make it 7-4.

That was as close as they’d get.

North Babylon had another crooked number in the fourth inning, they got a one-out walk by Jake Miele, single by Konig and single by Kirincic to load the bases for Tristan Garcia. He ripped a two-run single up the middle to give the Bulldogs further breathing room and make it a 9-4 lead.

Stumpf ran into a little trouble in the fourth, allowing a single to Castro and a walk to Jackson Pam before Jean-Louis ripped a single to right but a perfect throw from Garcia nailed Castro at the plate to end the threat. It certainly seemed like that was a big moment with Hills East running out of chances to comeback.

North Babylon posted a huge inning in the fifth – scoring four more runs thanks to an RBI single by Miele, a pair of wild pitches and a bases loaded walk. That was essentially all she wrote after that.

Eric Schultesz said after the game that the team missed some chances to sweep teams last season and it was important to get the job done.

They will face Copiague next week as they look to stay hot and hopefully reach the postseason this season.

North Babylon Looks Primed For a Huge 2019

North Babylon Looks Primed For a Huge 2019

With a solid Head Coach at the helm, you can bounce back quickly from down seasons. After winning eight games in 2017, the North Babylon Bulldogs improved to twelve last year including an incredible comeback victory in the postseason over Lindenhurst. This year, they’re hungry for more.

North Babylon scores two in the bottom of the seventh to stave off elimination and defeat Lindenhurst 8-7

It’s no surprise the Bulldogs expect big things this year. They’re a very experienced team led by Head Coach Steve Corrado. They did graduate all-league catcher Zachary Kolano and their All-League outfielder and leadoff hitter Paul Tchinnis. What they return to the team however, makes them more than dangerous.

Two players in a particular can be looked at to fill the void left behind at the lead off spot. Ross Tallarico, a returning junior and now three-year varsity starter, and Christian Fils-Aime who emerged last season as a sophomore and batted .358 last year with an insane .565 average in the playoffs. These two will look to compete for time in the leadoff spot and neither lack speed for the position, with Fils-Aime running a 6.6 60-yard dash, and Tallarico running a 6.8 60-yard dash. Brett Schultiesz, who also batted .565 in the playoffs last year, will look to fill the void that was left in the outfield.

This team is not lacking impact seniors either.

To start there is All-County first baseman and pitcher, Brian Primm. As a pitcher, he compiled a 5-2 record on the mound. His bat was even better, as he hit .380 with 30 hits and two home runs. When he’s not pitching, he’s also not making any errors in the field at first base as he played flawless defensively. Also returning is Nick Burke, who is versatile enough in the field to play almost any position whether its short, second, third or the outfield. Burke, who dealt with some injuries was still All-League last year, with a .380 average and a 3-3 record on the mound. He’s a three-year starter and a two-time All-League award winner. In addition, there’s also the returning Evan Christopher. Christopher is the team’s shortstop, where he batted .282 last year and is one of the four returning starting pitchers. He was 2-0 in the playoffs last year and looks to build off of a strong second half. Also returning to round out the impressive staff is Nick Picataggio, who last year pitched to a 1.50 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in relief for the Bulldogs.

There are plenty of reasons to be excited for the North Babylon Bulldogs this year. Still, they know that there is plenty of work to be done to move past division foe West Islip. They certainly seem up for the task.

North Babylon 2018 Season Preview

By Vinny Messana on February 23, 2018

Article is published on www.axcessbaseball.com

One of the great predictors of future success at the high school level is the amount of winning that a young group has accomplished.

Most of North Babylon‘s young nucleus of players played together not just during the school season, but also during the past three summers for the PAL Blue Knights. This past summer, they won the Boys of Summer 16U American Division with almost exclusively their varsity team. That is very unusual in this day of elite organizations.

Head Coach Steve Corrado is very optimistic about his 2018 team.

“I was pleased with the progress of the team, they really got better as the season went on,” said Corrado. “We lost four one-run games and two two-run games–I expect that to improve this year,” he added.

Additionally, the team graduated only two players–albeit it their ace (Pat Solomita) and leadoff hitter (Joe Barbuto).  They will be relying on a young core that already has a year of competitive varsity ball under their belt. Six of their eight position players are returning from last year which typically leads to an uptick in wins.

Leading the charge is junior Brian Primm. He was a force as a two-way player in 2017. He batted .403 with one HR, 15 RBI and a .493 OBP. On the mound, he was lights-out in his final five starts of the year. Over 33.1 IP, he compiled a 2.10 ERA with a 0.99 WHIP and allowed only 24 hits while striking out 29 batters.  “He’s a tall, athletic kid that is still growing into his body,” said Corrado. “He started the year towards the bottom of our order but by the end of the season he was our three-hitter. He’s an above-average first baseman and line drive gap-to-gap hitter with a short, compact swing. Power will develop in time,” he added.

Another impact bat is Nick Burke, whom Corrado described as a “real throwback player.” He played every position except right field last year and he batted .378 in the second half of the season. Like Primm, he is also a key cog in the rotation. He compiled an ERA of 1.83 over his last four starts last season, which consisted of 23 IP and 20 strikeouts while yielding only 14 hits.

Possibly rounding out the rotation is LHP Anthony Palumbo. He “showed glimpses of the player he could be” according to Corrado. One example of that is his outing against co-league champ Bellport last season. He held them hitless through six innings but hit the pitch limit. Corrado noted he has a fastball touching the low 80s with a 12-6 curve

Senior P.J. Tchinnis will be counted on to galvanize the team and be a catalyst at the top of the order after compiling a terrific .430 OBP last year.

“He has plus-speed and he’s a team leader,” said Corrado. “He really gets the team going and he’s a high-energy guy.”

Zach Kolano will make the switch to catcher from the middle infield. He is a senior and has experience behind the plate. Evan Christopher will move from second base to shortstop with the graduation of Barbuto.. Corrado noted that shortstop is his natural position anyway. He will also contribute on the mound, he was 2-0 last season with an ERA in the mid 3’s as a relief pitcher but could get some starts.

Corrado spoke highly of sophomore outfielder Ross Tallarico, who is the starting QB of the football team and just led North Babylon to the Long Island championship game against powerhouse Garden City.  “He is the fastest kid–and one of the most athletic kids–on the team,” said Corrado. He batted .290 as a freshman last season and made a spectacular running catch at Ducks Stadium last year against West Islip in a game I attended.

All told, Tchinnis, Kolano, Primm and Burke played all of last year on varsity, while Christopher and Tallarico played the last 10 games. The nucleus of the team is intact and hungry to compete in a revamped league that will feature plenty of firepower.

Newfield drops down from League III with the top pitching staff in the county, West Islip is one of the top programs on Long Island, Centereach had a record of 19-1 at the JV level last year and Copiague has the top pitcher on the island in LHP Franklin Parra.

Despite that, Corrado is confident in his group.  “We expect to be a playoff team.”

Fallen Sergeant Paul Tuozzolo honored at North Babylon-West Islip high school baseball game

Updated April 24, 2017 10:19 PM
By Gregg Sarra  gregg.sarra@newsday.com

This was not about a baseball game — it was so much bigger than that. This was about two communities that came together through love for family to celebrate the life of a fallen police officer at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip on Monday.

More than a thousand people were on hand to honor Sergeant Paul Tuozzolo, who worked in the 43rd Precinct of the South Bronx and was killed in the line of duty on Nov. 4, 2016.

The neighboring towns of North Babylon and West Islip recognized Sgt. Tuozzolo and his commitment to family and community through his 19 years of police work. His wife of five years, Lisa Martinolich-Tuozzolo, wearing a Tuozzolo jersey with his badge number 870 across the back, and their two young sons Austin, 5, and Joseph, 4, enjoyed the game.

“I’m honored for Paul that people care and I don’t want anyone to forget what he sacrificed,” Martinolich-Tuozzolo said. “He bled blue and loved his job. He went to work every day to protect people. His guys would do anything for him because he was a true leader. I’m thrilled at how the communities came together for this.”

The boys, along with their mother, threw out the first pitches. Martinolich-Tuozzolo accepted an authenticated American flag that was flown by the Port Authority of NY-NJ over the One World Trade Center. The flag was delivered by Dan Rhein, an 18-year veteran of the Port Authority, and a 1993 graduate of North Babylon High School.   Rhein, who graduated with Lisa, said, “I wanted to reach out and do something special for the family. It’s an honor to be in the brotherhood. I could forget about ninety-nine percent of the people in high school but she was one worth remembering. Her husband saved his partner’s life and his death was senseless.”

North Babylon won, 5-4, on a walk-off, infield single by Nick Elliot that scored Nick Burke in the eighth inning. North Babylon’s Paul Tchinnis had a pair of two-run singles.

Both schools wore commemorative uniforms and all the proceeds from the game and fundraising events will go toward memorial scholarships for both schools in Sgt. Tuozzolo’s name.

“I have two digital memory boxes, one for each of our sons,” Martinolich-Tuozzolo said. “It’s so important that I remind my kids every day about who their Dad was and that he served the community to make a better world.”

North Babylon baseball coach Steve Corrado said, “Lisa connects the districts. She was a grad of North Babylon and now the assistant principal at West Islip High School. She’s as good a person as I’ll ever know. Her loss was our loss and it was overwhelming.”

Corrado contacted West Islip coach Shawn Rush and the two agreed to play a Suffolk League IV game at the home of the Long Island Ducks.

“We saw two big South Shore school districts come together like family to support one of their own,” said Glen Eschbach, the superintendent of North Babylon schools. “The message was clear. You’re a member of the North Babylon community forever, no matter where you go. It’s an awful tragedy and heartbreaking but the family knows they have a large support system.”
