About Raiders Program

 

WHAT TYPE OF PROGRAM IS THE GLEN ELLYN RAIDERS?

  • Raiders is a travel feeder program serving boys and girls who:
    • Live within the boundaries of Glenbard South High School, AND
    • Will attend Glenbard South High School. 
      • If you live within the boundaries but plan to attend a different high school or alternative school, a boy or girl who attends GBSHS shall be selected before a non-GBSHS student.
  • Tryouts will take place in mid-September.
  • Practices begin around October 1.
  • Games can begin as early as November 1 and run through end of February/early March.
  • Teams play in the DuPage Youth Travel Basketball League (DYTBL). 
    • 16-20 regular season games (half home, half away).
    • 2-3 end-of-year tournament games (location determined by leaugue commissioner).
  • Home games are played at Glenbard South High School in the main gym and fieldhouse.
  • Games are played on Saturday and Sunday - only rarely do games occur on weekdays. 
  • No games during Winter Break unless an opponent has access to an open facility.
  • All rules and regulations follow those of Glenbard South High School and District 89 Schools.

HOW MANY TEAMS ARE THERE?

  • 1-2 teams per grade level (4th-8th) for boys and girls.
  • 10 players per team depending on the player's skill level and the number of players who register for tryouts.
  • Cuts will be made at grade levels with higher registrations - there is a limited number of players the program can handle.

HOW OFTEN DO TEAMS PRACTICE?

  • Mostly 2 per week for 75-90 minutes at Glenbard South High School or Glen Crest Middle School.
    • Our practice schedule is based on the available space provided by GBSHS and GCMS.  There is a possibility only 1 practice is allowed per week due to the influx of winter and spring activities in February.
  • No practices during Winter Break.
  • Players are expected to bring a correctly-sized ball, proper shoes, and a water bottle to every practice.

WHAT BALL SIZE IS REQUIRED?

  • Boys
    • 4th, 5th grade - Size 6 or 28.5" circumference
    • 6th-8th grade - Size 7 or 29.5" circumference
  • Girls
    • 4th grade - Size 5 or 27.5" circumference
    • 5th-8th grade - Size 6 or 28.5" circumference

WHAT IS THE COST OF THE PROGRAM?

  • $300 – plus uniform ($120-$150) 
  • Uniforms include a reversible jersey, reversible shorts, and a long-sleeve warmup shirt.
  • Other apparel and accessories are sold separately through the Spirit Wear website.

FOR COACHES:
The player emotion and physical health is more important than winning.
Organize practices that focus on individual and team skill development that are also fun and challenging.
Lead by example, behavior should demonstrate fair play and sportsmanship.
Treat players, parents, and officials with respect.
Give feedback to players in positive constructive way.

FOR PLAYERS:
Support and respect your teammates and coaches.  No verbal or physical abuse or disrespect will be tolerated.
Have a positive attitude.  Be disciplined, dedicated, work hard, and have fun.
Do not argue with officials.
Attend all practices and games when possible.  Notify coach in advance if unable to make it.
Remember that basketball is a great sport to learn life skills that you will use the rest of your life.

FOR PARENTS:
Support the players, coaches, and the team.
Arrange for players to attend all games and practices when possible.  Notify coach in advance if unable to make it.
Respect the officials - they are human beings who make mistakes.
Respect the coaches and Raiders board members - they are volunteers.
Discuss concerns with coaches in private.
