ROSWELL STAKE BASKETBALL OVERVIEW
Thank you for participating in the Roswell Stake Basketball Program. Our mission is to provide opportunities for stake members and guests (young and old) to exercise, learn sportsmanship, fellowship with others, and invite non-member friends to the Gospel in a safe, fun, and friendly environment. This is not intended to provide a league where winning is the only goal.
All those serving in the league, including referees, are non-paid volunteers. We are grateful for their service and could not function without them. We ask that you treat them with kindness and respect at all times.
STAKE RULES
Member and Non-Member Residence Rules*
- Members must reside within ward boundaries.
- Non-members must reside within stake boundaries.
- Non-members must play in at least two games to play in the tournament.
- Only one non-member can play on the floor at a time.
*unless specific excpetions have been discussed/approved with leadership
YM / YW Eligibility*
- Youth participating in high school varsity basketball are not eligible to play.
- All others will need to follow local school rules.
- It is the responsibility of the youth and parents to make sure local school rules are followed to protect the youth and school teams.
- YM / YW must be in high school - This applies to those who are old enough to no longer be in high school—not to someone in middle school, for example.
- The age of the players (e.g., deacons and younger young women) who play on a team is a unit decision.
*unless specific excpetions have been discussed/approved with leadership
Forfeits
- Regular Season: If a regular season game results in a forfeit, a scrimmage can be played during the time period scheduled for the game. However, while the score table will keep the clock, the scorebook will not be kept and the score will not be displayed on the scoreboard.
- Playoffs: If a playoff game results in a forfeit (e.g, for ineligible players, etc.), no game or scrimmage will be played.
Mercy Rule
- At halftime, if a team has a large and presumably insurmountable lead, the opposing coach can decide whether to play the second half keeping / displaying the score.
- In the event the mercy rule is invoked, the halftime score will be recorded as the game score. And there will be no pressing in the second half.
Pressing for YM
- A team cannot press if it is ahead by 15 points or more.
- Defense must back off to half court.
- Repeated non-compliance may result in a technical foul(s).
Pressing for YW
- Until the Last 3 Minutes: Until the last 3 minutes of the game, there is no pressing once possession of a defensive rebound is established. The defense must back off to half court.
- The Last 3 Minutes: During the last 3 minutes of the game, a team can press if it is not ahead by 15 points or more
- Repeated non-compliance may result in a technical foul(s).
Minimum Playing Time
- All YM / YW players dressed or on the roster must play at least 3 min. per half. The age of the players on a team is a unit decision.
Technical Fouls for Conduct
- 1st Technical: The player is out of the game for two minutes.
- 2nd Technical: The player is out for the game and his or her bishop is notified.
- 3rd Technical: The player is out for the season.
Overtime (three-minute periods)
- In the regular season, there will be a maximum of 2 overtime periods. If the game is still after 2 overtime periods, the game will be decided by giving each team 5 free throws attempted by different players (continues as necessary).
- In the playoffs, there is no limit to the number of overtime periods.
Timeouts
- Three timeouts per team, per game.
- One timeout for each overtime period.
Clock Stoppage
- Running clock until the last two minutes of the first half.
- Running clock in the second half (unless the point differential is 15 points or fewer). If the point differential is 15 points or fewer, then the clock will stop the last two minutes of the second half.
- Clock stops the last minute of overtime.
Punctuality
- Teams must show up 15 minutes ahead of scheduled game time and fill out the scorebook prior to the start of the game.
- If a team shows up 1 to 10 minutes late, the game will be shortened.
- If a team is more than 10 minutes late, the team forfeits the game.
Multiple Teams
- If a ward has more than one team in a category, there is no transferring of players between teams during the season or tournament. This also applies to young men playing with the men, for example.
Score Table and Clean Up
- Each team should supply one person for the score table.
- The two wards playing the last scheduled game of the day have clean-up duty.
- Remove garbage in the gym (e.g., floor, benches, etc.).
- Set up chairs for sacrament meeting.
- Take down chairs for team benches and stage.
- Spot check bathrooms and hallways.
