This is a site for players, parents and fans of the Western Sizzlin Pee Wee Basketball Team of Goldtrap/Gardner Boys & Girls Club in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Our mission is to teach the kids solid basketball fundamentals that will enable them to improve their skills and enjoyment of the game. Although we will attempt to be competitive in all our games, our number one goal is for the kids to have fun, whether we win or lose. Our second goal is to develop an understanding of the importance of being a TEAM. We want them to know that we win as a team and we lose as a team. Our tourney will be held at Jeffrey's Boys/Girls Club and we are the #3 seed from Goldtrap. We will play #3 seed Envision Realty from Evans on Saturday, February 22nd at 10am.

 Congrats to our week 9 player of the game, Karbyn Cohee. He really hustled and

 played well in this game. Karbyn had three rebounds in the opening quarter and

 that was because of his hustle to the ball. He played really good defense and

 helped us make a big comeback against National Family. Karbyn is a good kid

 that is playing basketball for the first time and we have thrown a lot of things at

 him this season. He always tries his best and I'm proud of that. Great job this

 week Karbyn, we are very proud of you!

As good as we had played the previous week versus Dale Crampton, the opposite could be said in this game, especially in the first half. I blamed myself for the performance. I was sick and missed the Dale Crampton game and our kids almost pulled off the big upset, before falling in the final seconds, 32-30. So this game I was back and we played poorly, so the egg is on my face! We did manage to come out and play a really good second half, outscoring National Family 20-7 and pulled out the win despite me being there. LOL

The first half we were very sluggish and really turned the ball over a lot. We scored a total of three points in the first 6 minutes of the game, that's how ugly it was. Karbyn Cohee was one of only bright spots of the opening quarter as he hustled his way to three rebounds in the 1st quarter alone. The 2nd quarter was not much better as we turned the ball over and missed a ton of easy, easy shots right at the rim. By the half, National Family held a 11-7 lead. We really challenged them to come out and play the way they are capable of playing and leave it all out there on the floor. 

Was so proud to see the guys respond like they did in the 3rd quarter of this one. Our defense, led by Sawyer Pierce and Connor Pendleton really put the clamps on National Family. Tatum and Coleson once again controlled the paint area and made some really good plays on defense. Hunter Moses would really come alive on offense. He scored 8 points in the 3rd quarter and really helped us take a lead that we would never lose. Tatum Branham and Coleson Hurst each chipped in a basket each and both kids really controlled the rebounds in this quarter. They combined for 8 rebounds in the quarter and we would take a 19-16 lead, heading into the final quarter of play.

The final quarter would see all our kids get to grab some minutes and they all played really well. Brazyn Coonrod and Isaiah Washington really played well defensively in the final quarter. Hunter would knock down a couple more baskets and Coleson and Tatum would repeat their 3rd quarter performance with a basket each. We would cruise to a 27-20 win. The win moves us into 3rd place in the league standings and secured us a #3 seed from Goldtrap in the up-coming city tournament.

 Congrats to our week 8 player of the game, Hunter Moses. Hunter had his best

 game of the season versus the #1 team in our league in Dale Crampton. He had

 10 points and really took care of the ball in this game. I wasn't there due to illness,

 but Coach Chris could not stop saying enough good things about the way he

 played in this game. He shared the ball really well and had us primed for the

 upset. Great job Hunter, we are very proud of you!

 Our player of the game for our game versus Noon Kiwanis was Tatum Branham.

 He had a really good game, finishing with 4 points and 10 huge rebounds. Tatum

 also played great on the defensive end of the floor. He was diving on the floor for

 loose balls and causing numerous turnovers. He also had at least 4-5 steals in

 the game. Tatum always gives 110%. He is a great example to some of the other

 players on how to lay it all out there on the floor. Great job Tatum, we are very

 proud of you! 

We knew going into this game it was going to be a close one. We practice the same time Noon Kiwanis does every week, so we scrimmage them a lot. Most of the times, the scrimmages are pretty even. Early on in this one it looked like we may run away with it, but Kiwanis caught fire from the field late in the game and made this one interesting. We had a really good plan defensively against Kiwanis and their best player, Grant York. We worked on it last night in practice and Sawyer Pierce really did a great job face guarding Grant and held him to only 6 points in the game.

The opening quarter it looked as if we may blow this thing wide open. Our defense, led by Sawyer was not letting Kiwanis get hardly any shots off. While offensively we saw what their defense was giving us, so I called a timeout and set up a play to give us an easy layup against their zone and I told the kids, "we are gonna run this play the entire quarter  until they make adjustments and stop it." Well we scored 7 points off that same play in the quarter and if not for a couple of missed layups, we would have scored a lot more. Coleson Hurst received some great passes from Hunter Moses and Coleson would score 7 points in the opening quarter off that play. By the end of the quarter, we held a 10-3 lead.

The 2nd quarter we had a different lineup in the game and they finally adjusted to the play we were running so it was fun while it lasted. The entire quarter was a lot of turnovers and missed shots by both teams. We got some really good defensive play from Isaiah Washington and Connor Pendleton in the quarter. Konner Smith did knock down a nice jumper from the wing to extend our lead to 12-5. Coleson would knock down a couple of free throws in the quarter to help us build a 14-5 lead by the half.

The final two quarters we had so many chances to pull away and blow this game wide open but we missed some easy shots. Kiwanis caught fire from the field late in the game and was able to pull within 21-17 with a couple minutes left in the game. That would be as close as they would get. Tatum Branham and Coleson would score a couple more times and we would hold on for a 27-21 win. The win moves us to a 2nd place tie in the league standings with Eastside Animal. Our record now stands at 3-3 in league play and 3-4 overall.

 Our week 6 player of the game is Coleson Hurst. He had his best game of the

 season against Eastside Animal on Tuesday night. He finished with 7 points and

 a team high 9 rebounds. He really played his heart out in the game and was a

 big reason why we had a chance to win the game in the end. Coleson is a bright

 young man and is one of the most coachable kids I've ever been around. He has

 a great attitude and will do whatever is asked of him. Great job Coleson, we are

 very proud of you!

This was one of those games that neither team deserved to lose the game. I actually told Coach Chris that mid-way thru the 4th quarter, but as we know, someone has got to lose. Eastside would score off an offensive rebound with only seconds to play to secure the 24-22 win over us. Our kids played maybe their best game of the season in this one. Our effort and energy on the court was awesome!

The opening quarter would see the game go back and forth. Tatum Branham would score a couple of big baskets for us and Coleson Hurst would hit a basket and a free throw to tie the game at 7 by the end of the quarter. We had trouble keeping Eastside's big man, Reid Anderson off the offensive glass the entire game. He is so long and athletic! The 2nd quarter would be a defensive battle with both teams playing pretty sloppy at times, turning the ball over a lot. By the half, Eastside held a slim 10-9 lead.

The final two quarter would be back and forth. The lead probably changed hands 6-8 times in those final 12 minutes of play. Just when it looked as if we were about to pull away, Eastside would battle right back at us. Hunter Moses knocked down a couple of jumpers to open the 4th quarter and we held a 20-15 lead. But Eastside would score on back to back offensive rebounds and just like that it was a one point game again. After a free throw by Eastside that tied the game, Coleson would hit a jump shot from the wing to put us up 22-20. But Eastside battled right back with a jumper of their own to tie the game at 22 with under a minute to play. We missed several chances to take the lead in the final seconds and Eastside would score again off an offensive rebound to go up 24-22 with 10 seconds left to play. We called timeout and drew up a play but Eastside defended it well and we weren't able to score in the final seconds. Congrats to the kids for a hard fought game. I was very proud of them!

 While the game wasn't quite what it turned out to be, we still had some guys that

 played really well in the game. Konner "KJ" Smith was a beast on the defensive

 end of the floor for us in this game. He caused numerous turnovers and jump

 balls and was all over the floor. He couldn't get a shot to fall in the game but did

 get off some nice looks that just rimmed out. This is KJ's first year to play

 organized basketball and he is doing really well. He is a very coachable young

 man who wants to learn. Congrats KJ, we are very proud of you! 

Ouch this one hurt! We really didn't show up in this game until the final half and by then we were down big. Tank's Shine has a couple of players on their team that play AAU ball together so we knew going into the game that we were in for a battle. I was just disappointed that we didn't show up for much of the 1st half. Tank's had us down 25-4 at the half, as it was the worst half we have played all season long. 

The final two quarters we played a lot harder and showed some effort. We would actually play them even in the final 12 minutes of the game, but our poor first half was just too much to overcome in this one as we fell 30-9.

Our player of the game for our game versus Noon Kiwanis is Connor Pendleton.

He had a really good game on Saturday, especially on the defensive end of the

floor. Connor was all over the place on defense. He caused numerous turnovers

and had several steals in the game. Connor has improved with each and every

practice and game. He has been practicing at home and it sure shows. He is our

most improved player from the start of the season until now. He always gives

110% and is a very coachable young man. Congrats Connor on being named our

player of the game, we are very proud of you!

At times it sure wasn't pretty on Saturday but we'll take it anyway. A win is a win is what they always say. There was some ugly basketball being played at times in our game versus Noon Kiwanis, but in the end our defense allowed us to hold on for a 19-12 victory. The opening quarter saw both teams struggle to score. Both defenses were playing pretty well, but we just couldn't make a basket. We missed several shots right at the rim. Tatum Branham and Coleson Hurst would each hit a basket and we would hold a whopping 4-2 lead after the 1st quarter of play.

The 2nd quarter we got things going a bit on offense. We started attacking their middle and that resulted in some easy baskets that we were finally able to knock down. Hunter Moses knocked down a couple of shots, while Sawyer Pierce and Isiah Washington both sank a basket to give us a 12-2 lead by the half. Our defense was really good in the quarter. Connor Pendleton and Sawyer were awesome at the top of our zone. Both caused several turnovers and each had a couple of steals.

The final two quarters would see both teams exchange a few baskets but a lot of turnovers and missed opportunities. While Kiwanis was able to close the gap some, we were able to hold on for a 19-12 win. The win moves us to 2-2 on the season with a non-conference game versus Tank's Shine on Tuesday.

 Our player of the game for our game versus National Family is Isaiah

 Washington. He played really well in this game. He played really good defense

 without fouling too much and he was all over the place on defense. Isaiah

 scored 2 points in the game and grabbed down 5 big rebounds. Isaiah gives 

 everything he's got the entire time he's on the court. Sometimes he gets

 carried away with that aggressiveness, so we're working on toning it down just a

 bit so he can stay in the games. Great job Isaiah, we are very proud of you!

This was a battle of two teams that were looking for their first win of the young season. Both have a lot of young players and I knew it would be a close battle. The opening quarter would be ugly basketball. Both teams turned the ball over on most trips down the floor. We missed a lot of easy shots right at the basket. Coleson Hurst was able to score off an offensive rebound and Tatum Branham knocked down a free throw to give us a 3-0 lead by the end of the opening quarter. The 2nd quarter would not get much better. Both teams played very sloppy and had way more turnovers than points. Connor Pendleton scored a basket for us off an offensive rebound to extend our lead to 5-0. Sawyer Pierce would also get on the board with a basket of his own. Our defense did a good job of not allowing National Family many open looks at the basket. After two full quarters of play, we would lead 7-0.

The 3rd quarter would see us have several defensive breakdowns that led to baskets for National Family. We were trying to get the ball inside to Tatum for much of the quarter and only was able to score two points in the entire quarter. The final quarter once again saw both teams struggle to get much going on offense due to turnovers and fouls. We fouled WAY too much because we weren't moving our feet on defense. We were able to get a basket by Isaiah Washington late in the game to help us pull out a 13-9 win. The win moves us to 1-2 on the season. 

 Our player of the game for our second game of the season is Brazyn Coonrod.

 He scored 2 points in the game and had a couple of rebounds. He also played

 really well defensively, causing several jump balls and turnovers. Brazyn always

 gives his best and is a good kid. Congrats for being named our player of the

 game. We are very proud of you!

This was a game between two teams with totally different rosters. While we are loaded with 8 - 3rd graders, Dale Crampton is the opposite, as they have 8 returners from last year. They are the best team in our league this year, as they well should be with all those returners. We really came out and played really well in the opening quarter of this one. It was our best quarter so far this season. Coleson Hurst and Hunter Moses both knocked down a couple of jumpers in the quarter and this one would be all tied up at 8 after the first quarter of play. The 2nd quarter we struggled to score our defense kept us in the game. Brazyn Coonrod was able to knock down a short jumper to make it a 14-10 Dale Crampton lead by the half.

The 3rd quarter would be a nightmare. Our defense totally fell apart, as we were allowing Dale Crampton to penetrate for some easy baskets. Their little point guard also caught fire and was red hot from the floor. Everything he threw up went in and they would outscore us 10-0 in the quarter and this one was all but over heading into the final quarter. We made sure all the guys got back in and played plenty of minutes as Dale Crampton would cruise to a 33-14 win. They outscored us 19-4 the final 12 minutes of the game.  

 Our player of the game for our opening game of the season is Sawyer Pierce. He

 had a really good game defensively against Eastside Animal. Sawyer was really

 aggressive and caused numerous turnovers and jump balls. He gives 110% the entire

 time he is on the floor. He is quickly becoming our leader on defense with his all out

 effort and hustle. I love kids that play as hard as Sawyer does. He is a good example

 to other kids on the team. Great job this week Sawyer, we are very proud of you!

Well the first game of the season is usually not to pretty. That would be an understatement in

 this game. There was some ugly basketball being played in this one by both teams. The effort

 and hustle was there by both squads and it was not a game for the faint of heart. I was very

 proud of our kids effort but we came up a little short in the end. 

The opening quarter saw both teams turning the ball over on most trips down the floor. Hunter Moses knocked down a jumper for our only points in the quarter. Our defense was aggressive and that was the only way we stayed in this game. By the end of an ugly quarter offensively, the game was tied at 2. The 2nd quarter would see Eastside hurt us on the glass. They had several baskets off offensive rebounds as we stood around and watched them rebound instead of attacking the glass. The result would us being down 9-4 at the half.

The 3rd quarter would see us finally get something going on offense. Tatum Branham knocked down a couple of jumpers to pull us within 11-10. Our defense held Eastside to a single basket in the quarter. Sawyer Pierce was all over the place for us on defense. He was really aggressive and caused all sorts of problems for the Eastside guards. Our problem was we could not turn our offense into defense like we could do last year. The fact that we have not got to practice full court at all in the pre-season has really hurt our ability to teach the kids to run the floor and how to get out on the break. 

Going into the final quarter we looked to be in good shape but we could not get a shot to fall in those final 6 minutes of the game. We got some good looks at the basket but we quit attacking the basket and started settling for long jump shots. The result would be a scoreless quarter and in the end, Eastside would hold on for the 14-10 win. It was not the way we wanted to start the season but we will get back to work in practice and get better for next week.

We have won 25 straight league games, with our last loss in league play way back on January 13, 2015, when we lost 34-32 to Graduate Sales. 

While the winning is fun for the kids, the thing that keeps me going is watching these kids develop as players and seeing them down the road be a contributor on their junior high and high school teams.
