There will be 15 games against other Babe Ruth teams in the same age group and other local teams, some high schools, some rec teams. THANK YOU !!!
Thank you to OSH for outstanding discounts to our league, great service and going that extra mile. OSH is the sponsor of our 16-18 team the Beavers. Also a great big thank you goes out to Meeks Lumber, Young's True Value Hardware, Costco and Home Depot for making field equipment donations to our league. Their generous support helps to promote 'community' and helps to keep enrollment fees down for the players.

FIELD VOLUNTEER
Elk Grove Babe Ruth is looking for one or more volunteers who can be available during the day to look after the fields. All of the board members work during the day, so the ideal person would be someone who is retired, an old "baseball guy", who wouldn't mind taking a little ownership over the fields to keep them in good shape. Clearing weeds, filling holes, watering down the infield and making recommendations to EGBR and CSD about what things need to be done are some of the tasks we envision. It would be great if this person or persons establish a relationship with the CSD maintenance folks and work with them on sprinkler fixes, watering adjustments, safety hazards, etc.

It would be so valuable to have a pair of eyes at the fields while the rest of us are busy at work. Providing advice and observations about the fields when the weather is questionable would be extremely valuable. We sometimes have to make decisions about cancelling practices or games without really knowing the exact conditions of the fields. This field rep could get litter or some other drying agent during the day to get fields ready for afternoon use, which is something we only do now when we show up at the fields around 4:30 or later. And usually the game or practice is delayed while this work goes on.

We also have to pick up chalk from CSD's maintenance yard and bring them to the fields, but that is difficult work even for a young guy!!

If you are interested or you know someone who is, please contact Joe Matlen at 747-6252 or joemat3@comcast.net or any other board member.

KIDS NEED COMMUNITY SERVICE?!
If you know someone who needs community service hours, Elk Grove Babe Ruth is a great organization to gain those hours. We can use assistance in field maintenance, refurbishing equipment, help at tryouts, help with fundraisers, help at tournaments, and possibly other areas. Board Members play for the Giants again
Board President, Joe Matlen #29, Vice President, Rick Venegas #44 Secretary Doug Penney #6 and Fields manager Chuck Arthur #37 played for the Giants in the adult Fantasy Tournament called the Melee in Mesa January 25-28, 2007. Their team, The Lodi Giants (managed by Doug Penney) finished 1 and 3 including a win against the rival Dodgers,(6 to 3). Doug, a catcher batted .333; Joe a second baseman/outfielder batted .500; Rick, first base/outfield batted .308, and Chuck a 3rd baseman only hit .250 but had a key RBI hit in beating the Dodgers. This was the first season of Fantasy camp baseball for Chuck. While Joe and Rick are second year players but Doug is a vetran of many years. Joe got brought up in Kangaroo Court for Wearing a Yankee Blue Batting helmet to giants practice ($2 fine) and Rick was rung up Writting a new book and not giving his teammates an Autographed copy. The book The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama was produced and the author looks like Rick's twin ($5). Doug was the Kangaroo Kourt Judge so he didn't get hit in Kangaroo Court. Chuck the youngest of the Board members got brought up for pointing out at breakfast that he was the only one who got the senior discount. Everyone had a blast and no serious injuries beyond Chucks bruised knees diving back into first after a line drive was caught, worse he was out!. For more about the tournament in general see: http://www.sobaysports.com/sfgiants/Melee.html For more stories about Mesa ask Joe, Doug or Rick. or go to: leaguelineup.com/lodigiants.
