I'm moving from Ottawa to Markham in March. Planning to join your league. We switched to a mat instead of having the ump call the typical strikezone. I didn't think I would like it when we started but it actually turned out to be pretty good and eliminated a lot of the "questionable" strike calls you get from time to time.
Do you guys use a mat?
Does anyone one else have any experience with the mat?
Do you like it?

I am a good pitcher.  I live in Vaughn and do not wish to travel that far to play. A little bit about me, I played on a 18 and under traveling team as a youth and as an adult I have played on E,C and D teams. Also traveled on weekends to tourneys around the GTA. I throw and bat left handed, also can hit backside. I can also play first base and catcher. But profer pitching. I'm 36 years old 5'8" 186. I am a fit in this league? I also not like th Ottawa Senators.

We should use a bigger mat. The weak players looking for a walk will have to swing more often thus we will have shorter games.

Agreed! A big old mat is the way to go.

I agree with a bigger mat. I get so tired of some players "working a walk". I inderstand that it is sometimes important to get on base at any cost, but the walks in blowout games are pathetic. I would even say a strike zone is the way to go, but that may bring too many arguements into the game.

I think going to a larger mat would be a great idea!! It would help out the pitchers (especially on windy nights) and it would almost eliminate walks. I think this would help to speed up the game and enable us to play 8 innnings for most if not all games.

Walking is part of the game. If we want to move it along and have no walks, lets pitch to ourselves and change it into a 3 pitch league.

Why not...hmm...get better at pitching? If you walk that many..it's time to give the ball to someone else. You practice shagging flies, taking grounders in the infield...why not have your teammates try pitching..maybe they're good at it...as long as they aren't scared of the ball. Our mat is fine. If it were a common complaint, don't you think the manufacturer would enlarge the mat?

The current mat works. We do not need a bigger one.
