Good morning all,

Some of you I know, some I do not. My name is Rick Seymour, I am the VP of the USPL, and CEO of a Canadian NFP, called the Together We Stand Foundation. We sponsor a team in the open division. The entire USPL executive has been very supportive of our organization and mission. I don't often promote my foundation and our work among friends and family but today is an important day. Some context below

Together We Stand serves Canada’s military families by honouring their contribution to our country, supporting families in need of a hand-up, and educating the civilian population about the pivotal role these families play in the country’s safety and security. Our organization was founded in 2017 with a program called “Operation Care Package” where we gave pre-paid credit cards to 1500 armed forces families who had a loved one deployed over the holidays. Five years later, we have grown from one program to five, with approximately $3.3 million CAD of cash and gifts-in-kind distributed to families across this country. We have also been named as a trusted philanthropic partner of the Canadian Armed Forces by both the Chief of the Defence Staff and the Canadian Chaplain General.

Our focus is on the family. We are the only national, non-for-profit that brings the military family to the forefront… spouses, siblings, children and parents. We are inclusive of serving members and Veterans, but we recognize that families have their own unique needs, experiences and issues separate from the serving members. Our Military Family Advisory Committee has been critical in helping the organization to gain insight into military family life, emphasizing the need for recognition of the families role in supporting their loved ones.

The reason for this note today is to highlight our upcoming fifth annual Military Family Appreciation Day (#MFAD) here in Canada, and to ask you to participate in helping us to honour and recognize the almost million military families that live in Canada. On Friday, September 15th, 2023, we will be calling on all Canadians to show their thanks for military families by posting a message on their social platforms as an opportunity to come together as a country to say thank you to a deserving and often overlooked part of our national identity.

We hope you will find a moment to share something on your socials on Friday, September 15th, honouring these brave and resilient families. If you are interested in participating or learning more you can email me rseymour@twsfoundation.ca

100% of donations made this month will go to our Emergency Fund, helping out military families experiencing acute financial hardships.

Fellow USPL members,

As you may or may not know, I am the Chief Executive Officer of the Together We Stand Foundation (TWS).

Together We Stand is a Canadian not-for-profit that serves Canada’s military families by honouring their contributions to our country.

Tuesday, November 28th is known as “Giving Tuesday”, an international day of giving dedicated to charity work. This year, Together We Stand will focus our Giving Tuesday efforts on raising money for one of our most significant programs, Operation Emergency Fund. This program was established in 2021 to assist Canada’s military families in times when they find themselves most vulnerable – focusing on the areas of emergency housing, emergency childcare, critical mental health services, and food security.

Military families serve this country with pride… but with their service comes sacrifice moving to new provinces and communities every two years, isolation from family support, lack of available housing and childcare, and significant unemployment for spouses. The emotional and financial toll military life can have on a family is significant.

“Military chaplains are seeing an increasing number of soldiers, sailors and aircrew who — squeezed by the high cost of living and stuck in a system that forces them to relocate — are in financial distress and seeking assistance.” This is what Murray Brewster wrote as part of a recent article published by CBC, referencing Together We Stand specifically as an organization that the Canadian Armed Forces turns to for assistance.

"The past six months have been very difficult for many CAF members and their families as they struggle to find a way forward through the economic, social and cultural realities and changes that are confronting all Canadians in these uncertain times," said Brigadier-General, Guy Bélisle.

Since the inception of this program in 2021, we have distributed nearly $300,000 to more than 600 military families across the country. 43% of our funding has been utilized to assist families experiencing food security issues. Our organization has distributed over $4.5 million CAD of cash and gift-in-kind since 2017 across all our programs.

Today I am personally contacting you to help us achieve our goal of raising $15,000 for Operation Emergency Fund. Beginning Tuesday, November 21st through Tuesday, November 28th, every donation received will be matched up to $15,000 through the generosity of a private donor. This means your donation this week will have double the impact. A donation of $25 will put $50 into the hands of a family needing groceries – AND you’ll receive a tax receipt. Should you wish to learn more about Together We Stand’s Emergency Fund, I’ve attached an impact document for your review. Please consider a donation. Any contribution will make a difference.

www.twsfoundation.ca is the site you can use to find us.

I rarely reach out and ask my friends for contributions, but this cause is near and dear to my heart. Canada’s men and women in uniform spend their lives protecting our families – be it domestically or abroad. This is an opportunity to protect theirs in return.

With deep gratitude,
Rick Seymour
