Pirates Start Fast, Hold Off Monarchs
A six run first inning paved the way for the Pirates 9-7 win over the Monarchs in a game the weather boys said would never happen. Tom Hopkins led the way with two doubles and three runs. Eric Engler got the complete game win.
The Monarchs managed 17 base runners on the night, including 12 hits but the early deficit proved to be too much to overcome. The tying run came to the plate in the last of the 7th with two out but a check swing grounder ended the threat. Joe Buss led the home team with three hits, Josh Schafer and Mike Hewitt had two apiece and Mark Von demBach drove in three with a double and an RBI ground out.
