Pirates Hold Off Mariners

A three run seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie, propelling the Pirates to their second win in as many tries this season against the Mariners.

Both teams started slowly as Pirate starter Tim Adamany and Mariner Ben Gura allowed few base runners and no runs through three. In the 4th the Pirates drew first blood when Chris Peters scored after his one out double set the table for new acquisition Jerrod Taylor. Taylor stepped up with a hard single to left center and the Pirates led 1-0. Adamany put up a shutdown inning in the bottom half and he led off the 5th with a single, coming around to score the first of three more Pirate runs. Glenn Vorhes and Russ Higgins also scored in the inning with Higgins and Tim Webber collecting RBI's.

In the bottom of the inning, though, the Mariners took advantage of the Pirates' only two errors of the night and scored four runs on three hits, the big blow being Scott Hallahan's bases clearing double, Hallahan scoring too when the second error was an errant throw from the catcher into the outfield.

Neither team scored in the 6th inning as new Pirate pitcher and eventual winner Jay White allowed no hits or runs over the final two innings. In between of course the Pirates struck for three, the first three batters of the 7th reaching base and all scoring on Taylor's second big hit of the night.
