DeRoche Powers St. John's At Matignon High School, St. John's took on perennial league powerhouse St. Mary's of Winchester in a rematch of the 2018 State Championship game.. Led by three players with double figures in scoring, St. John's pulled away for a 47-30 victory. St. Mary's struck first before Vic Quagrello evened the game on a feed from Jessie Ford. A Sydney DeRoche jumper at the 11:29 mark would give St. John's a lead that they would never relinquish. The game would remain close. DeRoche would assist on two Sophia Divall baskets and hit a runner in the paint to push St. John's to a 16-13 halftime lead. Both teams would battle as the second half started out. St. John's began to assert it's height advantage with Reese Matela scoring four times and Sophia DiVall adding a basket as St. John's held onto a slim 28-24 lead with 6:22 left in the game. With the game getting tight, Sydney DeRoche took over. She took a steal the length of the court for a lay up, made a free throw, scored on 3 of the next 4 possessions, sandwiched around an assist to Matela capping a 15-6 run to make it 43-30 St. John's. Matela's two free throws and an Olivia Horton jumper would make the final score of 47-30. St. John's played it's finest all around game of the year. DeRoche led the way with 15 points and 3 assists. Vic Quagello added 14 points. Reese Matela finished in double figures with points(10) and rebounds(12).
