Spathanas Lifts St. John's At the Swampscott Middle School, St. John's took on Triton in their regular season finale. Led by a stellar effort by Nikki Spathanas, St. John's took a close win. St. John's struck first just over a minute into the game on a Vic Quagrello offensive rebound. Triton would come back to take the lead before Nikki Spathanas started a spurt. She assisted on a Quagrello field goal, blocked a shot, and scored off an offensive put back to give St. John's a three point lead at the 10:39 mark. Sophia Divall hit a lay up and Jessie Ford made two free throws to cap a 10-0 run to make the score 14-5 with 2:17 left in the half. But Triton would not go away, cutting the lead to three with under a minute to go. Spathanas would score again with 57 seconds left to send St. John's into halftime with a five point edge. In the first half, Spathanas had 4 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, and an assist. After a Triton hoop to start the second half, it was bombs away for St. John's. Sydney DeRoche and Jessie Ford each hit 3-pointers to push the lead to nine just three minutes in. Both team would match baskets with Anna Dahlman scoring for St. John's. Triton made one last push closing to within five points with 5:15 left in the game. But just as she had done in the first half, Nikki Spathanas would stop any hopes of a comeback. She scored twice on offensive rebounds in the closing four minutes to help seal a hard fought 37-33 victory. Vic Quagrello led St. John's in scoring with 9 points to go along with 8 steals. Spathanas finished in double figures with 14 rebounds added to her 8 points, 5 blocks, 3 steals, and an assist. Anna Dahlman threw in 4 points to go along with 4 rebounds to help St. John's. With the win, St. John's finished the season 18-6 and 10-3 in the conference and have qualified for the State Tournament with wins in at least 70% of their games. They now will play in the regional playoffs starting the weekend of February 22-23 with the State Tournament set to begin on March 7th.
