About the Hoopers
It is hard to overstate the benefits young people experience through their participation in organized athletics. The participation level in AAU organizations, like the Hoopers basketball club, has risen dramatically as parents have recognized the positive influence that team sports have had on their children. Parents are enrolling their children at earlier ages in organized programs with outside coaching; this has significantly raised the level of play across all age brackets. Whether or not you agree with the trend of starting kids younger, two things are clear:
1. Participation in team sports is starting earlier and requires greater commitment today than in previous generations.
2. It is very difficult to make an organized sports team, at any level, without having had the benefit of program with outside coaching.
The Hoopers basketball club programs are targeted to help young players learn the game and develop team skills. Their experience will benefit not just their basketball careers but activities and passions beyond sports.
The Hoopers success has comes from its focus on three key areas:
- Fundamental skills and game mechanics
- Structured practice sessions with experienced coaches
- Tournament and league play
For young players who enter the program, the regimented approach to developing mechanics and skills produces dramatic results. It is critical in the early stages of development for players to receive consistent feedback and regular reinforcement of key messages. Hoopers’ player benefits from a dedicated practice facility and training center as well as one of the most experienced coaching teams in AAU basketball.
Our program is one of the largest youth clubs in the state and is made up of 20 teams encompassing girls and boys in multiple age brackets. While our club is dedicated to creating opportunities for young players, it is still unable to provide opportunities to all who tryout due to limitations on resources. It is important for parents to remember that young players develop at different rates and can quickly catch up to their peer group with additional time and preparation.
As a parent, you should consider the following items before enrolling your children for the Hooper’s AAU basketball program:
1. Hooper’s AAU teams require greater parent commitments of time and money than a community recreation program. Teams practice twice per week and play in a number of tournaments throughout the area. Parents need to honestly evaluate whether they are in a position to fulfill their responsibilities before allowing their young athlete to join a team.
2. Competition is significant both internally for spots on rosters and for starting positions. In the 2007/2008 season the Hooper club had players from 50 different cities across Southeastern Michigan, and was forced to cut close to 40 young athletes through the tryout process.
3. Practices are well organized events that at times are both intense physically and mentally for young players. Players who take spots on rosters are expected to prioritize their commitment to their teams – attending practices on time and coming ready to play.
4. Displays of poor sportsmanship from players or their parents will result in immediate termination from the club at the time the incident occurs and cannot be appealed. The Hoopers club has earned its reputation for excellence and sportsmanship – we will not make exceptions for poor behavior.
What you should expect at the different levels of the club.
10U/11U/12U- Teaches the basic fundamentals of competing at a faster pace then the player is accustomed to. Learn about proper teamwork, as most players come from leagues where they’ve been the best player.
13U and 14U -Starts to incorporate more strategy about the game, including How to start, pace and finish a game/tournament. Learns and defines their roles within the team to achieve victory as a unit. Starts to prepare players for the High School experience.
15U/16U/17U -Teaches and coaches like a college level team (faster, quicker, player orientated). Exposes different match-ups on the floor without interfering with our continuity as a team.
How we spend our resources
The Hoopers club and all of our teams are supported exclusively through player fees and subsidies provided by BBC Detroit (through discounted court rental fees) and Midwest Athletics (through a limited number of hardship scholarships). BBC and Midwest Athletics are committed to maintaining these subsidies and discounts in the future. The Hoopers teams utilize the player fees collected to purchase and provide the following requirements for our players:
Key Team Expenses % of Collected Fees
Practice Time 50%
Coaching, Admin, Marketing 25%
AAU cards, Travel
Tournament entry fees 25%
Referee fees, League and scrimmage
Fees, Misc.
The Hoopers club also has an agreement with Basketball City to provide free open gym to all active club members during their respective AAU seasons. This has been a significant benefit and one that many Hoopers players and parents have utilized. With that in mind please remember to be respectful to all of the BBC staff when using their facility as we appreciate these benefits and would like to maintain them.
Hoopers club players will also be able to attend any Midwest Athletics camps during the 2008/09 season at no additional charge on a space available basis. In 2007/08 a full quarter of Hoopers members attended at least one Midwest Athletics camp for free.
