Grays Capture Title; Simpson Named MVP

The Brookville Grays captured the 2009 Federation Baseball League Championship by sweeping the Rossiter Miners with a 5-3 win, Sunday evening in Rossiter. It was the second consecutive championship for the Grays and fourth within the last six years. The Grays have won the Federation Baseball League title in 1992, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009.

The Grays continued to ride their strong starting pitching as they got five solid innings from veteran left-hander Dave Klepfer. Not only was Klepfer helping the Grays win another championship, but with his five innings he became the Grays all-time innings pitched leader with 463 2/3 innings. Last year’s finals MVP gave up three runs on five hits, four walks, and struck out 3 to earn the victory.

Brookville scored four runs in the top of second inning and never looked back. Cole Cook, Tyler Ross, and Korry Lindemuth all drew walks to load the bases with one out. Jason Buck got the Grays on the board with a sacrifice fly to score Cook. Ben Marzullo followed with a double to score Ross before Kirk Hays clutched up with a 2-run single.

The game was held scoreless until the Miners tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Zach Smith started the inning with a lead-off single. With two outs Austin Furman singled to put runners at first and second. Matt Gourley then delivered with an RBI single, but ended up on third base after the Grays threw the ball around. Kyle Gorby then plated Gourley with his own RBI single to put the score at 4-3.

The Grays would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. Ross reached on an error and was moved into scoring position on a Lindemuth sacrifice bunt. With two outs the Miners chose to intentionally walk Marzullo in favor of Hays. Hays delivered with an RBI single and gave the Grays a 5-3 advantage.

The Grays then turned to the bullpen in Nate Simpson (left). Once again Simpson continued to excel as the Grays primary reliever and tossed two scoreless innings to notch his third save of the finals. He gave up no runs on one hit and struck out 2.

The Grays ended the season with a record of 22-7, which included an 8-1 clip during the post-season. The Miners end the season with a record of 18-12.

Grays Take 3-0 Finals Lead

The Brookville Grays took a 3-0 finals lead with a 4-2 victory over the Rossiter Miners at Dr. Wayne McKinley Field Saturday evening. He would advance to third on a groundout and wild pitch and scored on Matt Gourley’s sacrifice fly to centerfield. Kyle Gorby then greeted Fitzgerald with a homerun over the left field fence.

The Grays would battle back in the second inning as Jon Kemmer led off by being hit by a pitch and Kirk Hays followed with a walk. Kemmer moved to third on Eric Painter’s flyout to center and with Dave Klepfer at the plate, Hays stole second. The throw from Dakota Bish sailed away from the middle infielders allowing Kemmer to score. After Klepfer lined out for the second out Cole Cook stepped to the plate and delivered with an RBI single to score Hays.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning and two outs. Ben Marzullo stepped to the plate and crushed the 0-1 offering over the right field fence from Austin Furman to put the Grays ahead 3-2. The Grays added another run as well with the help of a Painter RBI single.

Finals Preview

BROOKVILLE — The Brookville Grays led the Federation League standings from start to finish. The Rossiter Miners, after starting 4-4, won 10 of their last 12 regular-season games and nearly caught the Grays.
After each won their playoff semifinal series over the weekend, the longtime rivals will face off starting Tuesday night in the league’s best-of-7 championship series at McKinley Field.
The Grays (18-7) will host games 1 and 3 Tuesday and Thursday and games 5 and 7, if necessary, on Sunday and next Wednesday. The Miners (18-8) hosts games 2 and 4 Wednesday and Saturday, and game six next Tuesday, if necessary.
All weekday games begin at 6 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday games set for 5:30 p.m. starts.
The Grays and Miners are familiar foes in the postseason with the Grays owning the historical edge. Last year, the Grays, after losing the opening game of their semifinal series, won four straight games to win the best-of-7 semifinal series in five games on their way to a Federation League title.
This is the fourth time the Grays and Miners have met in the playoff finals with the Grays winning in five games in 2004 and rallying from a 3-0 deficit in 2001 to win in seven games.
The Miners beat the Grays for the title in seven games back in 1991. The only other time that the Miners have beaten the Grays in a postseason series came in a three-game sweep in the 1998 semifinals. The Grays have won five of seven postseason series against the Miners since 1991.
While the Grays are gunning for their second straight championship and ninth overall since joining the Federation League in 1984, the Miners are trying to win their first postseason crown since 1993. The Grays also won titles in 1992, 1996, 1997 and 2006.

GRAYS NOTES

— Advanced to finals with a 4-1 win in best-of-7 semifinals against NAPA Auto Parts.
— Jason Buck, the league’s Pitcher of the Year, went 2-0 with a save in the series, giving up no runs, four hits and four walks in 12 innings. For the year, he’s 8-1 with two saves and a 0.86 ERA in 57 innings. He’s struck out 51 and walked only eight in 57 innings. He’s allowed one earned run in his last 32 2/3 innings on the mound.
— Buck will be the Grays’ Game 1 starter, followed probably by Hibell and Klepfer.
— All three of Ben Marzullo’s postseason hits have gone for home runs.
— Postseason leading hitters: Korry Lindemuth (6-for-13), Eric Painter (6-for-15), Tyler Ross (4-for-13), Buck (4-for-14), Kirk Hays (3-for-7).
— Other postseason pitching: Dave Klepfer (1-0, 4.20 ERA), Craig Hibell (0-1, 1.50 ERA), Nate Simpson (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 appearances), Jon Kemmer (0-0, 0.00, 1 start).
— Season hitting leaders: Marzullo (.400, 5 HRs, 28 RBIs), Hays (.351, 14 RBIs), Buck (.351, 3 HRs, 21 RBIs), Lindemuth (.344, 9 RBIs), Jesse Zahoran (.339), Eric Painter (.321).

MINERS NOTES

— Advanced to finals with a 4-2 win in best-of-7 semifinals against the DuBois Rockets.

— Other postseason hitting: Mike Smiley (6-for-20, 5 RBIs), Rick Matthews (7-for-18, HR), Pete Meterko (7-for-19).

— It’s anyone’s guess on how the Miners will use their pitching staff in the series. Their top pitcher during the season, Emporium native Jordan Crane (5-1, 1.95 ERA), may be unavailable for the entire series against the Grays due to him pitching in another league — the Alle-Cat — as late as Sunday following a 4-inning outing in a Game 5 win for the Miners last Saturday.
— Postseason pitching: Crane (2-0, 0.00 ERA), Christian Muth (2-0, 0.72 ERA), Furman (0-1, 4.74 ERA), Tommy Bush (0-1, 4.00 ERA), Jason Jacobson (0-0, 1 save, 0.00 ERA).

A walk to Dom Varacallo, and a single by Dylan Howard loaded the bases for Mike Gray.
