Softball Program                                                                                       

Welcome to AYS&B’s Softball program!  The softball program is designed for girls from 6-14 years of age (Gr K-8).  There are four age groups with each taking part in the Chippewa Valley Fastpitch League.  AYS&B League Play strives to create fair play opportunities for children of all skill levels.  Coaches are advised to consider a child’s abilities and may not play a child in a position that the child is not able to play in order to keep the child safe.  Our goal is to create a passion for the sport of softball based on team camaraderie and sportsmanship. 

The season starts in Late April and ends by the middle of June to the end of June.  Practices are generally 2 times per week before games begin based on field and coach availability.  Once games begin, they are generally one or two times per week.  Practice may occur in addition to games, but generally no more than once per week when games are being played.  Specific dates and times for practice and games depend on field availability and the coach’s discretion.

 Half of the games will be played in Altoona while the other half will be played within 30 miles of Altoona.

8U Age Group  (6-8 years old)

This is an entry level age group for girls who are playing softball for the first time.  It is the next step after t-ball as the coaches do the pitching.  This age group stresses the fundamentals of throwing, fielding, and hitting and the games are focused on learning.  The schedule includes 10-12 games for the season.

10U Age Group (9-10 years old)                                                

This age group further stresses fundamentals of fielding, hitting, and throwing but also introduces girls to pitching.  Base running skills, defense and game situations are also stressed.  This age group will play in the Chippewa Valley Fastpitch League with some travel involved within a 30 mile radius of Altoona.  Home games are played in Altoona.  The schedule includes 12-15 games for the season, concluding with a league tournament.  

 12U Age Group (11-12 years old) 

This age group will be more competitive, following ASA rules, with a few exceptions.  All aspects of softball are stressed at this level and fundamentals are further reinforced.    This age group will play in the Chippewa Valley Fastpitch League with some travel involved within a 30 mile radius of Altoona and home games played in Altoona.  The season schedule will consist of 12-15 games, concluding with a league tournament.

 14U Age Group (13-14 year old)        

This age group is designed to prepare players for High School softball.  Focus is on honing skills in pitching, defense, and offense. Again, ASA rules will be followed and games are more competitive.  The season will consist of 15-18 games, concluding with a league tournament.        

Summer traveling teams info/tryouts - if your daughter wishes to play at a more competitive level, we do have travel teams in the older age groups.  These teams would play in 4-5 weekend tournaments through the summer and practice during the week.  There is an additional cost for these teams and tryouts may be necessary based on participation and interest.

Keep checking website www.altoonaball.org.  You must play AYSB League Ball in order to be eligible to try out for an AYSB summer traveling (“All-Star”) team.
