Meet the Crusaders Coaching Staff

Neil Fitzgerald   (8/9 Boys Volleyball) 

2016-2017 marks Neil Fitzgerald’s 10th year heading up the Boys Physical Education program at Clear Water Academy. Neil is the head coach of the 8/9 boys volleyball team. 

Neil was the head coach of the High School Boys Basketball team for 8 seasons. Under his guidance, they have captured two League Championships and advanced to the Provincial Championships as Calgary Zone Champions in 2010, 2014, and 2015.   The 2014 team captured the provincial bronze medal.  In 2011 and 2012, he was on the coaching staff for the Provincial Bronze Medalist Team Handball team.

Born in the small town of Dawson Creek BC, he grew up in a very sports-loving family and was able to play varsity volleyball and basketball. Neil is a passionate fan of basketball and he has been playing for 25+ years, during which time he had the opportunity to play at and compete with players at almost every level. As a basketball head coach, he has over a decade worth of experience in a number of different cities in Alberta.

Neil still enjoys playing basketball, volleyball, and golf whenever he can. He has a strong commitment to fitness, and is a huge fan of the NFL.


April Borotsik  (Grade 8/9 Girls Volleyball) 

This will be April's 8th year leading the girls PE Program but 10th year overall with CWA.   After 7 great years as Head Coach of the High School Girls Volleyball team, April will lead the grade 8/9 Girls Volleyball Program.  

Her High School Girls Volleyball team has claimed 6 consecutive Calgary Zone Championships and captured CWA's only Provincial Championship in 2011.   Under her instruction, we have had many badminton players win CISAA Champinships and the group captured a SC Zone Championship in 2009.  

April is a Hall of Fame Athlete at DIckinson State University where she was a two sport athlete as a volleyball setter and softball player.    She is married to Dustin and has two young girls, Halle and Tessa.  

Maria Fitzgerald  (Girls Team Handball) 

2015-2016 marks Maria's ninth year coaching at Clear Water Academy. Maria is currently the assistant coach of the 8/9 girls basketball team, and girls team handball team.   She has coached numerous seasons of volleyball, basketball, and handball at CWA.    Her high school basketball teams won the Calgary zone 5 consecutive years, peaking with a Provincial Silver Medal in 2014.   In 2014 she helped with the undefeated zone champion 8/9 girls basketball team.  Her handball teams have made four appearances in the Provincial Championships capturing two silvers and a bronze.   Hailing from Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, she won a Provincial Championship as a high school basketball player, and was also a varsity volleyball and badminton player. 

She still plays basketball (has for 20 years), volleyball, golf, and tennis.  Maria believes in sports being a big part of character development, and playing the game with ethics and integrity. 

David Holy (7/8 Boys Basketball)

David has been coaching basketball for 15 years, most recently as the team 1 head coach of CalWest Bantam division, and assistant coach of the Calgary Basketball Academy elite grade 7 girls club team.  After playing basketball in high school, David went on to earn his BS degree in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University.  He also played intramural basketball in university as well.


David began his formal coaching in 2001 with the CalWest basketball association, and has coached both girls and boys in all age groups, ranging from 8 years old up through high school teams (including Clear Water Academy high school).  He has led many teams to both provisional and division championships through his coaching career.


At CWA David will be head coaching our 7/8 boys basketball team this year.   He has coached at CWA for years, winning the school's first ever zone championships at the 8/9 level (2004), and High School Level (2006).    Last year he coacehd the 8/9 girls basketball to an undefeated season and CISAA and SC Zone Championship.  


In the fall of 2014, David will be assuming the duties of Executive Vice-President of girls’ basketball for all of CalWest. This includes coordinating all divisions from age 8 through high school.



Thomas South


This year marks Coach South’s third year with Clear Water Academy and third season involved with Clear Water’s Junior High Basketball program, his thirteenth year as a coach, and twenty-fourth uninterrupted year involved in competitive sport.

 He brings previous experience from coaching High School Track and Field at his previous school as well as a twelve year coaching career in the sport of Competitive Swimming where he coached in excess of fifty individual provincial records, over two hundred provincial medal winning swims, nearly  a dozen national medalists, seven provincial championship teams and the 2013 Alberta Summer Games silver medal winning team.  In this sport he is also a certified Level 2 NCCP coach, as well as an NCCP Coach Certification Learning Facilitator and Assessor.

 As an athlete, Coach South played Hockey, Baseball, and Soccer at the junior level but focused mostly on his ten year career in swimming where he competed for the U of C Dinos, where they won Canada West title and were runners up at the CIS championships three times.  He also won several Youth and Junior National medals for his individual performance, made several finals at the Senior National Level, finished sixth place at the 2001 Canada Games and competed in two World Cups of Swimming.

 From this experience he brings an intense love of sport, the athletic mindset, team work, competition, and the growth that athletics provides.  He believes in hard work, discipline, the right to make mistakes, and the power of a growth mindset. 

 He continues to love sports and remains as active as he can.  He is an avid fan of the NHL and NFL and he looks forward to another year of being a part of the Crusader’s Coaching staff and to helping further the growth and development of his athletes.
