PRESEASON POLL

NAPA Auto Parts received the nod from the Federation League’s first-ever preseason poll as the favorite to win this year’s regular-season championship. All five of the league’s managers submitted their predicted final standings.
Teams received 1 point for first place, 2 for second place and so on. Here are the final numbers, with the lowest point total being the preseason “favorite.” First-place votes are in parenthesis:

PRESEASON POLL
NAPA Auto Parts (2) 8
Brookville Grays (2) 10
Rossiter Miners (1) 13
DuBois Rockets 19
Sykesville Senators 25

Managers also submitted their picks for this year’s preseason Player and Pitcher of the Year. Those nods went to two Rossiter players with last year’s Player of the Year Matt Gourley garnering the most votes in a pretty much balanced vote. The Pitcher of the Year award went to Christian Muth, who received three of the five votes. Results below:

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Matt Gourley, Rossiter 2
Kasey Clinton, NAPA 1
Jon Kemmer, NAPA 1
Ben Marzullo, Grays 1

PITCHER OF THE YEAR
Christian Muth, Rossiter 3
Tommy Bush, Rossiter 1
Dave Klepfer, Grays 1

FEDERATION LEAGUE PREVIEW

In the Federation League’s wooden bat era, pitching and defense are the primary ingredients to success. A few good hitters and consistent personnel don’t hurt either.
For the Brookville Grays, those elements have been there traditionally, especially the past few years. They’re coming off regular season and playoff championships last year and have won three of the last four and four of the last six postseason titles.
While one can’t doubt the Grays’ annual contention for championship banners, don’t doubt the abilities of the Rossiter Miners, DuBois Rockets and NAPA Auto Parts, as well as the Sykesville Senators.
The margin for error between a win and a loss is a lot narrower and any of those teams can win on a given night. A preseason favorite? Good question.
A significant new twist to the league schedule this year is an interleague setup with the Indiana County League. The Fed League will play four rounds within its own league — four games against each team — for 16 games. Then each of the five teams will play one game apiece against the seven teams in the ICL for a grand total of 23 games, three more than the league played last year.
Those interleague games will count toward the Fed League record. The leagues will determine their own champions, so they won’t meet in the postseason.
The interleague schedule, 35 in all, begins Memorial Day weekend as Kovacic Insurance (Creekside) travels to Brookville to take on the Grays on Friday, May 28. Five more games are scheduled for May 29-30.
The rest of the interleague schedule is set for June 4-6, June 11-13 and June 19-20. The balance of the Fed League season will be played during the week within those dates and the final regular season games will be played July 8.
Sykesville’s Paul Roman will be the league’s president while Kevin London is the vice president. Korry Lindemuth will serve once again as league secretary and web site manager.

Here’s a quick team-by-team look at key returning players, with last year’s regular season record and overall (playoffs included) individual stats noted:

BROOKVILLE GRAYS (14-6) — Ben Marzullo (.424, 7 HRs, 32 RBIs) and Korry Lindemuth (.333, 5 2Bs, 12 RBIs) were First Team Fed League selections at outfield and utility while shortstop Tyler Ross (.260), outfielder Cole Cook (.243, 15 RBIs) and pitcher Craig Hibell (5-4, 3.21 ERA) were Second Team picks. Pitcher of the Year Jason Buck, First Team catcher Jesse Zahoran and Second Team DH Kirk Hays have moved out of the area. Playoff finals MVP Nate Simpson (.220, 4 saves, 2.50 ERA) is also back.

DuBOIS ROCKETS (10-10) — Tom Yeager (.281, 10 RBIs) was a First Team third baseman while outfielder Dave Smith (.286) and utilityman Andrew Welch (.268) were Second Team selections, although Smith will be out of the area this summer and Welch is injured. Brian Shaffer (3-1, 4.60 ERA) led the pitching staff in wins while Mike Davidson (2-2, 2 saves, 2.00 ERA) led the team in innings pitched. The addition of former Rossiter Miner Kyle Gorby (.363, 6 HRs), a First Team outfielder last year, will bolster the lineup.

NAPA AUTO PARTS (10-10) — Plenty of young talent make them a dangerous team. Second baseman T.J. Anderson (.377), DH Kasey Clinton (.423, 7 2Bs, 16 RBIs), and pitchers Kevin London (5-4, 2.52 ERA) and Jeremy Smith (5-1, 2.94 ERA) were First Team selections while first baseman Rob Burns (.254) and third baseman Phil Smith (.212, 14 RBIs) were Second Team picks. Jordan LaBue (.568) and Nate Sabados (.472) hit well in limited action.

ROSSITER MINERS (14-6) — Last year’s playoff finalists return three First Team players, led by league MVP Matt Gourley (.412, 8 2Bs, 8 HRs, 41 RBIs). Shortstop Pete Meterko (.379, 5 2Bs, 15 RBIs) and pitcher Austin Furman (4-2, 3.85 ERA) also were First Team picks. Catcher Mike Smiley (.307) was a Second Team pick. First Team outfielder Kyle Gorby and Second Team pitcher Jordan Crane will not play for the Miners this year. Other key returnees are Christian Muth (.306), Rick Matthews (.250) and Jason Jacobson (3-1, 1 save, 2.48 ERA).

SYKESVILLE SENATORS (2-18) — The Senators return two all-league players in First Team outfielder Ryan Gordon (.323) and Second Team outfielder Jason Roman (.300). Dan Waskovich (1-6, 4.44 ERA) and Cody Cogan (0-5, 1 save, 5.11 ERA) led the pitching staff in innings pitched.
