League Information
Background
Since 1991, this organization has provided players, typically ages 19 and older, with the opportunity to play competitive, semi-pro baseball throughout the Mid-Maryland area (primarily Carroll & Frederick counties). In 2002, the league changed its name from the Carroll County Unlimited Baseball League to the Mid-Maryland Semi-Pro Baseball League, due to expansion into Frederick County and to more accurately reflect the level of play.
National Affiliation
The League is affiliated with the National Amateur Baseball Federation (NABF).
Season
The 20-30 game regular season includes an All-Star game and runs from mid-April through June. Playoffs and the League Championship Series take place in July in an advancing best 2 out of 3 quarter-final and semi-final and 3 out of 5 championship format. In August, the Regular Season and League champions each receive berths to NABF Regional tournaments, typically in Salisbury, MD and/or Youngstown, OH. Additionally, the League Champions go on to represent the League in the State Tournament at the end of August.
Teams & Players
The current teams primarily encompass the Frederick, Hampstead, Mt. Airy, Owings Mills, Sykesville, Taneytown, Thurmont, Union Bridge, Westminster, and Winfield areas. It is recommended that teams carry between 15-21 players in order to accommodate player work schedules, vacations, injuries, etc.
League Fee
Each team is charged a League Fee of approximately $1000 to cover Liability Insurance, NABF Membership & Tournament Fees, the All-Star game (baseballs, lime, and umpires), the Post-Season games (baseballs, lime, umpires, and championship t-shirts), Award Plaques (MVP, Outstanding Pitcher, Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, Regular Season Champion, League Champion), Umpire Scheduling Fees, etc.
League Baseballs
Official League baseballs are ordered by each team through the League prior to each season at a cost of approximately $55 per dozen. Generally 4-5 dozen will be sufficient for the entire season.
Player Fee
Each team charges its own player fees in order to cover expenses, typically ranging from $75-$200 per player, depending on whether the team has sponsors, does fundraisers, etc.
New Players
Teams are encouraged to do their own new player recruitment. New player registrations recieved by the league are broadcast to the league managers to contact. Placement is determined by a variety of criteria which includes, but is not limited to, preferred team, acquaintances on existing team, home town, work town, and each team’s player needs. Please fill out the Player Registration Form or send your name, age, phone #, email address, home town, work town, positions played, last year you played, highest level played (age/high school/college/semi-pro/pro), throw (right or left), bat (right or left), and how you found out about the league (web site, flyer, newspaper ad, word of mouth, etc.) information to info@mmspbl.com.
New Teams
An average budget figure for new teams thinking about entering the League is about $4000 (basically $1000 for the League Fee, $1000 for Uniforms & Equipment and $1800 for Umpire Fees. Please fill out the New Team Registration Form or send your name, age, phone #, email address, home town, team name, home field, and how you found out about the league (web site, flyer, newspaper ad, word of mouth, etc.) information to info@mmspbl.com. Teams without a home field will still receive consideration for entry into the League, but they must pursue the possibility of gaining field time with their local rec. councils and youth sports associations. Having your own home field will greatly enhance your chances of acceptance into the League.
