New York Red Bulls Training Rationale

Player Development Rationale

The Red Bulls Academy operate a building block approach to PlayerDevelopment. At a young age mastery of the ball is vital for a child’s future development. Players follow a path focused on technique and skill development, as competency increases, tactical elements are introduced. Within each building block, an extensive curriculum is offered. The following diagram illustrates the New York Red Bulls ‘Building Blocks of Player Development’.

Coaching Methodology - How we teach

The Red Bulls Academy Coaching staff focuses on three methods to deliver the building blocks of player development

A description of each method is offered in the table below:

# Method Description
1 Inspire
  • Players need to develop a motivation and desire to work hard during training sessions and during their own time away from structured sessions.
  • Every player - coach interaction serves as an opportunity to develop a passion and love for the game
2 Expert Coaching
  • In order for a player’s ability to improve, they require accurate and concise information, combined with specific and immediate individual feedback.
  • An adaptive coaching style is used to ensure that every player is developed during the training session; the objective is to create players who are independent thinkers.
3 Repetitive
  • Repetition and deliberate practice is the key to learning. To master new skills players need to receive a high frequency of realistic situations that offer maximum ball contact.
  • Players must be challenged to work at a high intensity that replicates a game environment.

The MSC/NYRB relasionship

The MSC has had a long standing relasionship with the New York Red Bulls Organization. In fact the MSC has employed Red Bulls trainers since the Red Bulls inception. Prior to the Red Bulls the MSC utilized the MLS camps and trainers affiliated with the New York Metro Stars.

The MSC currently employs two outstanding Red Bulls trainers, Chris Colley and Jack Chapman. The MSC is committed to providing the most professional, up to date training available to our youth today. Each Travel Team is assigned a Red Bulls trainer and trains with that trainer at a minimum of 1x per week and is some cases 2 or 3 times a week depending on team commitment levels.

The MSC also offers a Developmental Player program designed for pre-travel aged youth players. This program is designed by the New York Red Bulls and follows the US Youth Soccer Developmental model which is recognized throughout the Country as the standard.

Specialized training programs are offered in the summer months such as Futbolinho and Indoor training during the winter months.

In addition the MSC hosts a Red Bulls Team camp for competitive travel teams and a skills camp for individuals or developmental pre-travel players.

It is the intent of MSC to follow our Parent organizations Club structure model. This model is widely recognized throughout the country as the model Youth Soccer Clubs should follow in order to provide multiple levels of player development.

Is the MSC unique due to it's geographic area? The MSC believes this is not the case, we are no different then other rural clubs throughout the State or Country who join a parent organization which is located some distance away in order to participate in a competitive soccer league. We are given no special treatment due to where we reside nor should we be given any special treatment.
