Jay Council's Freshman Year at Belmont Abbey

http://abbeyathletics.com/article.asp?articleID=1536
Columbia Hoyas former player Jay Council is having a outstanding freshman season at Belmont Abbey. Jay started off getting adjusted to the college life in the classroom and basketball court. He stated it took him sometime adjusting to sitting and watching basketball games vs leading his Camden Bulldogs to a State Championship just a few months ago. I spoke with his College Basketball Coach Stephen Miss about his progress at Belmont. He stated Jay is a hardworking young man and his glad to have him be apart of Belmont Abbey Basketball Team. For the first couple of months he was playing very little. With hard work in practice, he has started the last 4 games and has led them to 4 straight victories. In the classroom, Jay has a 2.8 GPA and by the end of the year he wants to finish up with a 3.0 or better. I am so proud of Jay's success on and off the court. He will have a great career at Belmont Abbey and look forward to seeing him play professional. Keep up the good work Jay and I will see you very soon. GO HOYAS!!!!

Mustafa Greene will be a North Carolina State Wolfpack

Mustafa Greene will be playing college football at North Carolina State this season. Here is the information from the The State Newspaper:

Irmo running back Mustafa Greene committed to N.C. State on Friday, according to Yellow Jackets coach Bob Hanna.

The 6-foot, 205-pound running back is listed as a four-star prospect by Rivals.com and could help immediately in a backfield that has little proven talent returning.

"He's a great running back," Hanna said. "He's got size, strength, quickness, speed. He's a legit player."

Despite missing approximately six games last season because of a high ankle sprain, Greene rushed for 1,367 yards and 18 touchdowns in eight games and averaged more than eight yards per carry. He was selected to represent South Carolina in the Shrine Bowl and had the Wolfpack and Rutgers as his two finalists.

Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina were among the schools that recruited Greene, but he only visited Rutgers and N.C. State.

"Maybe I should have taken more visits, but picking between two was hard enough," Greene said earlier this week.

Hanna said Greene runs with both speed and power.

"He doesn't mind running over you," Hanna said. "He's a big kid. He'll make one move or one cut and get north and south."

N.C. State needs help in the backfield because its top rushers in 2009, Toney Baker and Jamelle Eugene, were seniors. Baker was granted an extra year of eligibility because of injuries earlier in his career but decided to leave school and enter the NFL draft.

Sophomores James Washington (who will be returning from injury) and Brandon Barnes, and veteran Curtis Underwood are among the players who will be competing for the starting running back position for the Wolfpack.

Greene received only a sniff from USC and Clemson, with the Gamecocks putting their emphasis on Marcuis Lattimore, the highly touted Byrnes running back who will announce his college choice Tuesday.

"I heard from (USC) early on with letters and stuff but really (had) no personal contact with them," Greene said. "If USC had come after me stronger, it probably would have made a difference."

I AM SO PROUD OF MUSTAFA, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!! WE WILL BE WATCHING YOU THIS YEAR. GO HOYAS!!!!

2010 Columbia Hoyas Upcoming Season

The 2010 Columbia Hoyas will be wearing ADIDAS Sportswear this year. We will be adding 3 more teams this year. I also would like to recognize one of my teams that have been ranked #24 in the nation. The 14u team is coached by Emment Eddy, Ben Dunlap, and Trevor Redden. The player’s names are Chris, Devin, Jalyn, Ben, Avery, Quinn, Omar, Keith, Marquise, and Vincent. On behave of the Columbia Hoyas organization would like to congratulate you on a job well done. GO HOYAS!!!!

The Hoyas's are having a great High School Season

This season has been going great for my kids this year. Owen Jacobs is leading his Fox Creek team to a winning record and averaging 16pts & 11rebs a game. He is having a great season and looking forward to getting Owen's some college looks this season. Devin Joint is another one of my kids that is getting D-1(VCU,Winthrop,Fairfield University) looks last year. He is leading Darlington(ranked#2 in the state) to a 15-1 record this year. Devin can do it all and I am looking for some big things this year. Avery Johnson is having a very productive year at Blythewood. He has some good scoring games and also running the team this season. I am looking forward to using Avery alot at the 2 guard this year. Jonathan Garrett is playing very well at Spring Valley. He made the all tournament team in Hillcrest Christmas Tournament. Jonathan averaged about 20pts & 8rebs a game. I looking forward to a great season this year. My bruiser in the post at Eau Claire are Dontel Riley and Wayne Henderson are having a great season playing together. Dontel has been one of the most steady players this year and Wayne is coming off a shoulder injury, but he has played very well this season. I am looking for them to change mindset of our other players to being vey physical this season. The new kids on the block are my two point guards Austin Davis and Shai Carpenter. Austin played in the Supershowcase and Nationals last year with the Hoyas, But I am looking for some big things out of him this season. He can really shoot the basketball and I am hoping for a change of pace this season with Shai. Speaking of Shai, he has at least a 40inch vertical and cat quick guard. He will score alot of points in quick burst for me this season. I cannot say enough about how good this team can be this season. Derek Snelgrove is has been adjusting pretty good at a new school(Ben Lippen). He is averaging about 10pts & 4rebs a game, playing with one of my former players Mitch Deter(who is having an outstanding season). I need Derek to be very aggressive this season. Blake Taylor is going to be a defensive specialist this year. I am looking for him to accept the challenge to play against the best player and also score double digits. Ryan Quarles is having a breakout year with Richland Northeast. I am looking for a physical guard on the wing this year. He brings toughness to our team. Quinton Creed Jr. is playing much better this season at White Knoll. He needs to be aggressive this year. With all that said, I am very proud of my kids this year and looking forward to seeing all of them play this season.
