From the Everett Herald Article:

Several local wrestlers rode upsets to the finals Saturday, perhaps most impressive was Lake Stevens' Eric Soler in the 126-pound 4A class. The Vikings junior defeated two undefeated wrestlers in the semifinals and finals both of which were state champions in 2010.

"It's unbelievable especially with a kid that's had to deal with an ACL reconstruction a year ago," Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said. "He comes through maybe the toughest weight class."

Against Steven Hopkins of Tahoma in the final Soler lead 6-4 but let Hopkins back in the match with a final second takedown at the end of the third period. In overtime Soler made one quick move to win the sudden-death match 8-6.

"I had it at the end of the match and I was just getting lazy," Soler said. "I was like (shoot) I've got to step back up."

Soler's win helped propel Lake Stevens to the edge of a team trophy awarded to the 4A teams with the top four scores. The Vikings finished with 91 points.

2010-11 Season

Mat Classic XXIII

February 19, 2011

Wresting with a torn ACL and sick with strep throat I wrestled to a 4th place finish in the 4A High School State Championships. After a 9-1 win over Max Tickamn in the first round I lost in the second round to senior Rueben Navejas, who went on to win his 2nd state championship. In round 3 I defeated my teammate Dakoda 5-2 and then got a 4th round win over Tre Uson 5-0. In the next round I met Taylor Salzberg, a wrestler I have wrestled about 6 times as a kid wrester and whom I have never been able to get a win over having lost many close matches to. This time would be different. I controlled the match from start to finish getting a 4-1 victory giving up only 1 point, that on an accidental poke in the eye. That win put me into the 3rd place match vs. Andrew Vulliet. I had defeated Andrew twice this season, 6-0 and 7-1 in the district championship finals. I lead this match 3-2 with seconds to go when I gave up an escape to tie the match then I took a poor shot that Andrew countered for 2 to win the match 5-3 dropping me to 4th place. I finished the tournament 4-2 and with a record of 32-7 on the year.
And my team won the 4A Team Championship for the 8th time.

I have surgery this coming Thursday. I plan to be back next season to win a State Championship.

2011 4A Region 1 Championships

February 12, 2011

I lost my first match of the year today at 112lbs to a WA wrestlers in the Regional Championship finals. I was ahead at the time and got into a scramble trying to finish a take down. Rather than just getting my two points I tried a cradle from a bad position and ended up getting pinned. I won my first match by fall and the 2nd by a score of 7-2. I head into the State Championships next weekend as a #2 seed.

2011 4A Wesco District 112lb Champion

February 5, 2011

I won my 2nd Straight 4A Northwest District Championship today defeating my old club team training partner and friend Andrew Vulliet in the finals in a tough 7-1 battle. I won my first 2 matches by fall and the third by an 11-0 decision. I go into regional next week as a #1 seed.

10th Annual Final Four of High School Wrestling

January 22, 2011

My HS team traveled back to Easton PA to wrestle some of the top teams in the country this weekend. We got smashed. A teammate and I had the best record on our team at 3-2. One on my loses was to Evan Silver, a senior from Blair Academy who has a full ride to Stanford and is rated number one in the country. My second loss came at 119lbs, 5-4, in a match I should have won. I hit a take down at the buzzer that I wasn’t awarded. I shouldn’t have let it be so close. I did get three good wins over three of the top rated wrestlers in PA at 112lbs. It was a great trip and a good learning experience.

In my first match of the day I had my ACL torn. After the match I sat down and my knee swelled and hurt tremendously. I wanted to continue to wrestle so I put a kneepad on and wrestled four more matches. When I returned home I went to the doctor and was told my ACL is torn and I need surgery to repair it. The Doctor said I could finish the season with a brace if I can stand the pain. I’m attempting to wrestle out the season and will have surgery on Feb 24th to reconstruct my ACL. I’ll have to rehab for the next 9 months. Sucks big time.

I took 2nd in this year's Viking Invite. Moving up to 119lbs I had a bye in the first round then won by fall over Bryce Templeman followed by a 10-0 win over Dillon Stiles, both from Orting. In the finals I met the 3A #1 rated 119lber in the state, Riley Miller from Kelso. Going into the 3rd round I was down by one in a back and forth battle. I cut him and had to get the take down to tie the score and go into overtime. I lost the scramble for the TD and ended up losing the match to take 2nd.
My season record is now: 13-2

2009 Season

Mat Classic XXII 4A State Championships

February 20, 2010
Today I completed my first season of HS Wrestling by placing 5th at Mat Classic XXII in the 4A 103lb Division. Only 4 freshmen placed in all 14 weights of 4A. I placed the highest of the four. I didn’t wrestle my best tournament and felt I could have placed as high as 3rd. I lost to one wrestler, Michael N. of Evergreen, twice. The 2nd time we wrested it was for the spot in the 3rd place match. I jumped to a 6-2 lead going into the 2nd period but was unable to maintain it as I ran out of gas and ended up losing 10-7 putting me in the 5th/6th place match. I defeated Josh N. in that match in a close tough match, 2-0. I finished the tournament 4-2 and my freshman year with a record of 36-8. I’m going to take a week off then start training for HS Nationals in Virginia Beach at the end of March.

2010 4A Region 1 Championships

Coming out of Districts I entered the 4A region 1 championships as a #1 Seed. This tournament consists of the top twelve 103lb wrestlers from our 23-team region. I made it to the Semi finals where I met Reuben N. for the 2nd time this season. Reuben is the defending 103lb State Champion as well as the defending National Freestyle Champion. I lost that match dropping me down to the consolation bracket where I defeated Sonny B. to place me into the 3rd place match. There I met Jesus V. a senior who placed 5th at State last year. We had a really great match that had me taking a 1-point lead with 20 seconds to go. I was unable to hold the lead as we got in a mad scramble and I gave up a reversal in the final seconds to lose by 1 putting me in 4th place. I did qualify for the Mat Classic State Championships held in the Tacoma Dome next weekend. Only 2 freshmen qualified for State from my region, me and my good friend and wrestling partner Matt C.

2010 WESCO 4A District 103lb Champion

Today I won my first High School District Championship. The first step towards wrestling for a HS State Championship in the Tacoma Dome at the end of February. I scored falls in my first 3 matches to make it into the Championship Finals where I would meet Sonny Bates-Mundell, who I had lost to at 112lbs earlier in the year. This time it would be different as I controlled the match to a 5-1 victory. My team also won the Team Championship for the 11th straight year, 19 of the last 20 years. My season record now stands at 30-4. Next weekend it's on to regionals. I need to finsih in the top 5 to make it to State.

Getting away vs Everett

Our team defeated Everett to win the 2009-2010 Wesco North dual meet championships. I wrestled the # 6 rated 3A 103lber, Jesse Lopez, and came away with a 10-4 victory. We wrestle at Dream Duals this weekend and have our last dual meet of the season this coming Thursday evening. Update: I wrestled at Dream Duals and won both my matches one at 112 and the other at 103 then my team defeated Oak Harbor to win the Wesco North Championship. I had a forfeit win vs O.H. My season record now stands at 26-4.

Lake Stevnes HS head Coach Brent Barnes

My team defeated Stanwood 54-15 tonight to remain undefeated in the Westco North Division. I had a forfeit victory.

2010 CK Matman Classic

Today our team entered the 2010 CK Matman Classic. Wrestling without 3 of our top wrestlers due to suspension for violation of school rules, our team came away in 3rd place. We had 2 champions, at 140lbs and 160lbs. I made the finals winning my first 3 matches, two of my wins coming over 2009 state placers. In the finals I met Reuben Navejas the 2009 4a State Champion and 2009 Fargo Junior national champion. Needless to say that match didn’t go too well for me and I came away with a 2nd place finish. After coming up short by losing in the semis of the last 2 big tournaments my team has entered, I was able to get over the hump and come away with a victory in the semis to make the finals. My season record now stands at 21-4.

It all Happens under the Light

January 11, 2010
My team defeated Arlington tonight 54-15 to remain undefeated in the Wesco North with 3 duals remaining. I won by forfeit. They decided not to send their 103lber out.

@112lbs vs Snohomish

Coach moved me up to 112lbs vs Snohomish to wrestle one of their top wrestlers. Unfortunately I had to give up nearly 10lbs to do it. First 2 rounds I stayed in control of the match. Starting on the bottom in the third I quickly did a standup. Sonny grabbed by leg in an outside single position. Rather than sticking with solid wrestling technique I tried a chin whip that Sonny took advantage of by shooting a half and dropping me to my back for the fall. Ouch, that one hurt. I’ll get another chance at Sonny at districts but at my own weight of 103lbs instead of having to give up nearly 10lbs to wrestle him at 112lbs. My season record falls to 17-3.

Scoring a fall vs Cascade HS @ 112lbs

Scored another fall tonight vs Cascade HS. Coach had me wrestle at 112lbs tonight. I weighed in at 101lbs.

2009 Viking Invite

The 1st day of the Viking Invite consisted of team duals. I went 3-0 defeating a wrestler from Hermiston, Dillion Harris from Yelm and Gable of U-Hi. My team won 2 of the duals and lost our first dual of the year that to Hermiston. The 2nd day of the Invite was an individual tournament. Once again in a big tournament I came up short in the semi finals losing to Dillion from Yelm, whom I had defeated the day before and was in control of this match until he was able to take advantage of a mistake I made to get the win. I went on to win my remaining matches to come away with 3rd. I finished the tournament 7-1. I am now 16-2 on the season.

3rd Place Match

Scoring a Fall @ Tri-State Championships to take 3rd

My team traveled to Idaho to enter the Tri-State Championships. Over 50 of the top teams in the NW attended. I lost for the 1st time in High School in the semi finals in a hard fought match. I bounced back to win my next two in dominant fashion to take 3rd place with a 5-1 record over the two days to include a victory over the #2 rated 103lb 3A wrestler in Washington by second period fall and 3 victories over top 10 rated Washington State wrestlers. Season record: 9-1
