Inclement Weather Safety Guidelines

  • Rain / Wet Conditions - Please check theLeague website for the Field Status regarding field conditions.
    • Red - Fields are CLOSED. Gates will be locked to avoid external usage (when fields are leased to GYGSA)
    • Yellow - outfield use only - NO infield usage.
    • Should rain start, be wary of the wet bases as players can slip on their slick surfaces.
  • Lightning - When lightning is detected within 10 miles of the facility, please get the players off the field and into the dugout. There is a 30min delay after the last lightning strike is detected. Suspending practices or games should be considered.
    • To better assist in determining/detecting lightning in the area, use a mobile app that tracks lightning strikes. Pictured below is an example:

General Safety Guidelines

At GYGSA we want to promote the safety of our players, coaches, parents, and spectators. Below are a number of items to be mindful and aware of. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in making GYGSA a 'safety first' softball league!

Notice for allIf you see a suspicious person or activities ocurring at any time near the fields, parking lot, or playground, please report it immediately to any Board member on duty or call the Georgetown Police Department. "If you see something, say something!".

Players

  • Always wear proper sport specific safety gear designed to protect and avoid serious injury.
  • Facemasks are ALWAYS to be worn if playing an infield position......non-negotiable.
  • Batting helmets are ALWAYS to be worn in the batting cages especially if a coach pitched practice is being done.
  • Proper footwear must be worn whether on the field or in the batting cage......cleats not clogs/slippers.
  • Always take another player or your parent when using the bathroom facilities (remember this is a Public Park).

Coaches

  • Be aware of players that have medical conditions as to not exacerbate their condition.
  • Only team players should be on the field at practices.....don't risk the injury of a sibling running bases or playing the infield
  • On extreme weather days, exercise the following:
    • Excessive Heat - Water breaks every 10mins (normal should be 20mins). Check each player for any undue exhaustion. No sweating = dehydration/heat stroke
    • Rain / Wet Conditions - Please check the Field Status for field conditions. If marked Yellow, outfield use only - NO infielding. Should rain start, be wary of the wet bases as players can slip on their slick surfaces.
    • Lightning - When lightning is detected within 10 miles of the facility, please get the players off the field and into the dugout. There is a 30min delay after the last lightning strike is detected. Suspending practices or games should be considered.
    • Cold Conditions - Players should be dressed for the weather condition (undershirt with a hoodie). If players cannot grip the ball, think about suspending practice.
  • Should a practice end early, please make sure every player has been picked up by a parent or gaurdian before you (Coach/Assistant Coach or responsible team parent) leave.

Parents

  • Please let the coaches know of any pre-existing medical conditions that your player may have (allergies, asthma, etc. ).
  • Please keep siblings out of the batting cages. This is not a play area!
  • Please keep sibling's motorized scooters, bikes, etc. away from the concession stand area to avoid accidentally running into folks in line or walking up.
  • Please keep siblings from climbing the Electrical boxes on the side of the Concession stand.
  • If dropping off your player to run errands, please have another parent know to keep a watchful eye and leave a contact number in order to be reached should an emergency arise.
  • Never leave siblings unattended at the playground near the East field
  • Watch out for players and siblings crossing in the parking lot....SLOW down!
  • Please park your vehicle in the designated parking stalls/areas. See same subject matter below under Spectators

Spectators

  • Please be mindful during night time games and practices that your headlights may impede players on the field. When parking, please turn off your headlights as quick as possible to prevent delays and promote the safety of the players/umpires/coaches.
  • Please park your vehicle in the designated parking stalls/areas. Do not park along the curbs in the parking lots as you risk the chance of:
    • Getting your vehicle hit
    • Impede the view of pedestrians walking through the lot
    • Impede emergency vehicles called in for serious player injuries
    • Impede Concession stand workers transporting food items
  • Reiteration of the above: Watch out for players and siblings crossing in the parking lot....SLOW down!
