WSP Challenger Baseball American Legion Post 521

West Saint Paul started playing American Legion baseball in the late 1950's.. Only for about 10 years (mid 1970's-mid 1980's) did the team not have a representative for Legion baseball. Chauncey Breckenridge, a West Saint Paul American Legion member, along with coaches Jerry Friedmann, Duane Selander, and Alf Martagon brought back American Legion baseball in 1987. In 1996, Charlie Godbout took over the team and made the program even stronger. The West Saint Paul/Mendota Heights American Legion took the Challenger name in 1986 from the space program to pay our respects and honor the astronauts who died in the Challenger shuttle explosion. Our American Legion baseball team has also taken the Challenger name to honor our heroes.

All in all, because of people like Breckenridge, Friedmann, Selander, Martagon, Godbout, and other American Legion Post 521 members, we have what we have today: A great American Legion baseball program for local athletes to have fun and continue to learn and hone their baseball skills.
