Paul Hoberg has been involved in coaching basketball to Bainbridge Island’s youth—both boys and girls—since his daughter Maggie began her playing career on a 2nd grade co-ed Parks & Rec team back in 2005. Paul was one of the original Roots coaches, helping to lead the very first off-season Roots skills sessions for boys back in the fall of 2011. Since then, Paul has led many of the Roots skills trainings, open gyms, and 3-on-3 leagues for boys, and also was an assistant coach for one or two Roots boys teams each year from the 2011-12 season through the 2013-14 season. Paul also served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bainbridge High School boys’ varsity squad during those years. His focus with the high school team was to help develop the post players. Paul has been a head coach for a Roots boys team each of the past three winter seasons (2014-15, 2015-16, and 2016-17). Paul has always stressed that his players learn the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defense as early as possible to develop good habits.
Paul played basketball all four years while at Menlo-Atherton High School in California—working his way up from the freshman and sophomore teams to being a contributor on the varsity his junior year and a starter his senior year. Paul was a practice squad player during his junior year at Stanford (1985-86), playing daily against Pac-10 players that were bigger, stronger, faster, and more skilled. He is solid proof that hustle, desire, enthusiasm, and a love of the game can overcome a lack of athletic ability to create a valuable contributor to any basketball team.
Paul works at Expedia's corporate headquarters in Bellevue. His wife Mev is a member of the Bainbridge Island School District’s board of directors. Paul’s daughter Maggie graduated from Eagle Harbor High School in 2015 and is a member of the class of 2019 at Georgetown University in Washington (DC). Paul’s son Charlie (who did just about every possible Roots program from 2011 until he aged out in 2013) is a member of the class of 2018 at Bainbridge High School, and plays on the boys basketball team.
Since the fall of 2013, Paul has also been on the Roots board of directors, and serves as the Roots Treasurer and Registrar.
