Final Summer Skills Clinic Friday, Space Available for you to "Drop In"

August 25, 2014

There is just one more session left in our popular Week Night Skills Offensive Skills Workouts. The program focuses on fundamental skills that are tough to spend much time on in practice.  In a typical team practice, a coach has to focus on team skills, team offense, team defense etc if he wants to compete in games.  It makes it tough to find enough time to simply work on the fundamental skills all players need to become players.  Because of that, we brought back our Weeknight Skills Clinic.

Here is what the Weeknight Skills Clinic is.  At each workout, we spend the first hour working on shooting, shot technique and breakdown and shooting on the move, game shots at game speed.  The second hour, we do live 1 on 1 / 2 on 2 / 3 on 3 and if time permits, 4 on 4 play.  This progression teaches players the right way to play by building up from the one on one game to the pick and roll game to the pass and cut or screen away game to finally, putting it all together in the team game.

So who is this clinic for?  Its for every player out there, from the elite player to the rank beginer.  No matter your skill set, this workout if for you.  And you don't have to be a Bulldogs player to attend. You could be with another club and just want some extra work on your personal skill set.  Or maybe your a HS player that wants to do a little more than his or her teammates to move up the depth chart.  Maybe your a CYO or MS player and you just want to get ready for CYO or MS tryouts in September.  Lastly, maybe you are one of our guys, a Bulldogs player, and you just want to do a little more.

When I started doing these workouts, people told me, "Paul, parents want to see more advanced, flashier moves. You need to get with the times and do what they want". I thought long and hard about it. Frankly, I really struggled with it. You see, I do want to make you all happy but in the end, I can't do what I know is wrong, even if everyone wants it. I have to stick to what I know is the right way to teach your kids to play. And that isn't to be flashier. Rather, it is to be more fundamental.

When you face a player that runs like a deer and can jump out of the building, you don't need to match him in those skills. Frankly, most kids probably can't, so why try. Rather, what you need to do is beat him with fundamentals. Get low in a stance and pressure him. Force him one way and then beat him there. Body up, don't be soft. Box him out HARD on every shot. Show him you aren't intimidated because you have great fundamental skills to fall back on and you can beat him with those. When you get the ball, use your jab step and up fake to create space to get by him or get your shot off. Again, be more fundamental, not less. That is how you compete with the superior athlete, it is what will get your kids on a HS roster and it is what we will focus on in our 2 hour workout.

The final workout is in Pleasanton from 6 to 8 PM, Friday August 29 @ Hart MS.  So, there is 1 workout left in the program so join now and kick the rust off your game.  If you are interested, you can come to the workout and pay the $30 single workout drop in fee.  Let me know if you are interested in coming out and I will send you the forms and all the pricing info to get you signed up.  Thanks and I hope to see you all on the Hardwood with us.
