North Newark Little League
2019 Age Rule Change – Impact on transitional players
May – August 2008-2011 birthdates

What is happening? In 2019 NNLL will go back to the April 30th age determination date. Players with May-August birthdates will be given a choice of which division they will play in for the 2019 season.

A few years ago North Newark made the decision to follow the lead of Little League International and the other leagues in the county to transition to an August 31 age determination date. After a few years of this transition the other county leagues decided to revert back to the 4/30 age date. The board of NNLL met on January 20th and after weighing parent input, the direction of the other leagues and ultimately looking at what is best for our players have decided to return to the 4/30 age determination date.

Who is impacted? Players that were born in 2008-2011 with May, June, July, or August birthdates. These are players that were moved “up” a division with the 8/31 age determination date.  Anyone with a 2012 birthdate or younger will follow the 4/30 date moving forward.

What does this mean for those kids that were placed up a division when we made the change a few years ago?  The board has decided that players with a May-August (2008-2011) birthdate will have the choice of which division they play in during 2019. This means that when a player has the opportunity to transition to the next division based on the previous age rules they can pick if they want to move up with their current group or  conform to the 4/30 age rule. If they move up they will have the option again on the next transition between divisions. If they stay under the 4/30 age rule they will remain there for the remainder of their time at NNLL.

Examples:

Player A has a birthdate of 7/5/2008.  Based on the 4/30 cutoff date they would be considered a 10 year old in our league this season.  If they choose to play varsity this season they may do so.  The would be able to stay in that division until they are no longer age eligible to play based on the 4/30 date.  This would be 3 seasons.

Player B has a birthdate of 6/1/2008.  Based on the 4/30 cutoff date they would be considered a 10 year old in our league this season. If they choose to play farm this season they may do so.  They would stay in that age group and transition to varsity for the 2020 season.  They would have 1 year of farm and 2 years of varsity remaining.  If they choose to play farm they would conform to the 4/30 age rule and stay with that group for the remainder of their time at NNLL.

Player C has a birthdate of 6/1/2010.  Based on the 4/30 cutoff date they would be considered an 8 year old in our league this season. If they choose to play farm this season they may do so.  They would have the option of playing farm for 2 or 3 years.  After 2 years they would be at another transition year.  If the parent prefers they can move to varsity and potentially play there for 3 years.  If they choose to stay in farm they would then conform to the 4/30 age rules and stay with that group for the remainder of their time at NNLL.

Player D has a birthdate of 7/1/2010.  Based on the 4/30 cutoff date they would be considered an 8 year old in our league this season. If they choose to play Derek Holland this season they may do so.  They would stay in that age group and conform to the 4/30 age rules.  They would stay with that group for the remainder of their time at NNLL.

How long can my child play at NNLL?  Are they losing any years? Players can stay until they are no longer age eligible based on the 4/30 date.

How does this impact All-Star selection? Players will be eligible for all-stars based on the division they participate in for that season.  For example, if a league age 10 player elects to play varsity, they are only eligible for varsity all-star teams but will not be eligible for the 10u team.  A player that is in a division with a May-August birthdate, like a league age 9, can be considered for the 10u, 9u or mixed farm division all-star teams.
