Knights win district opener 49-7 over Center Point-Urbana

The Union Knights jump to 3-0 and play in Dysart next Friday vs Cental Clinton DeWitt. CCD had a win over Anamosa this Friday.

Led by an aggressive defense the Union Knights jumped out to a 27-0 lead at halftime and went on to win their third consecutive game with the final score, 49-7. The Union defense, sparked by 11 tackles for loss, 2 fumble recoveries, and an interception return for TD held the Center Point-Urbana offense to 7 points and 112 yards of total offense. The defensive charge was led by Dylan McLaughlin (11T, 6UT, 5AT, 2TFL), and Matt Schmitz (6T, 3AT, 3UT, 1TFL). Wes Burnside, Cody Krall, and TJ Gray added five tackles each. Gray and Krall each had one fumble recovery while Jon Porter picked off a tipped pass and returned it 29 yards for a Knight touchdown.

Offensively the Knights continue to strike early and often with the run game combination of Wes Burnside (20 carries, 167 yds, 4 TDs) and Trev Hadachek (8 carries, 89 yds, 2 TDs, and 4 of 8 for 74 yds). Brad Gallup and Brad Siebel each had two receptions on the night. Union's offense averaged almost 9 yards per play en route to 354 yards and 15 first downs.

The Knight special teams provided a 5 of 6 PAT performance from Monroe while he punted two times for a 42 yard average. Three times CPU had penalties of roughing the punter and gave Union additional scoring opportunities. TJ Gray blocked a fieldgoal attempt and gave Union a big boost in momentum.

The Knights are now (3-0 overall), (2-0 non district) and (1-0 in 3A district 5). Union returns home to play Central Clinton - DeWitt at Dysart, UMS field with varsity game kicking off at 7:30pm. CCD has won two out of the last three district titles and is an annual 3A playoff participant.
