Old Allegheny Soccer was started by Ron Zaffuto in 1981. Over the years, the program has expanded and we currently use fields at Brighton Heights, Allegheny, Rooney and Perry. We have players from all of the North Side and some northern suburbs. Our travel teams compete with other teams in Western PA. Old Allegheny Soccer is a member of USA Youth Soccer Association and PA West Soccer. This year, we plan to have traveling teams for ages 10 to 18 (games played on Sundays), City League teams for ages 9 to 18, and our in house league for ages 5 to 13.
In House League Philosophy: Our in house leagues provide a positive learning experience for all participants. Everyone plays at least one-half or every game. We select new teams every year, attempting to balance them to provide a better experience for all. Players are grouped on their ability and we try to put siblings on the same team. In House teams use Brighton Heights fields. Every In House player receives a trophy and keeps their Team shirt.
In House Instruction League (5, 6 and some 7 year olds): Our instructional league has been very successful. We have 2 sessions per week. The first 4 sessions are instructional with parents being teamed with their child (hopefully the parents are learning so they can work with their children). After this, teams are picked and half of each session is spent developing skills, the other half games. We play mini soccer (4 on 4) with 5 or 6 players on a team. We use volunteer parents to help us organize these children (no experience needed). Sessions are 1 hour long. OUR FIRST SESSION WILL BE SATURDAY, AUGUST 22nd AT 12:15 AT BRIGHTON HEIGHTS FIELD (look at "Directions" link in left column to get driving directions).
In House B League, 7 to 9 year olds: Our In House B league plays small-sided games. Teams meet 3 times per week with games every Saturday and weeknight practices or games.
In House A League, 10 to 13 year olds: Our In House A league plays small sided games. Teams will meet 2 or 3 times per week with games every Saturday and weeknight practices or games.
City League Soccer: we put teams in the City League. The coaches will select these teams. Past performance and recommendations will be the main criteria for selections. Try outs may be held. Selections are made before our in house league begins.
Traveling Teams (PA WEST): Our PA West Travel teams play games on Sundays. PA West has boys and girls leagues for 10 to 18 year olds. Leagues are divided into 3 divisions. We have fielded teams at all ages and in all divisions. What teams we field will be determined by who registers and who coaches. There may be tryouts for these teams.
Team Pictures: Team Picture Day will be Saturday, September 6th.
Preseason Evaluations: These evaluations are used to place players on teams and in leagues. Evaluations will be held at Brighton Heights field and are grouped by age (the age of the player on August 1, 2009). Time are:
Ages 7 to 9 - Sat August 15th and Sat August 23rd, 9 to 10:30 AM, and Monday, August 17th and Wednesday, August 19th, 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
Ages 10 to 13 - Saturday, August 15th and Saturday, August 23rd 10:45 to 12 noon, and Tuesday August 18th and Thursday, August 20th, 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
Travel and City Teams: Your coaches will call you )be sure to mark your application if hoping to play on the City team.
New Soccer Field & Rec Center Proposed for Riverview Park
March 9, 2009
There is a plan to build a new soccer field and recreation center on Mairdale Street in Riverview Park (on the old dump site where the chain link fence is).
State Representative Don Walko, Mayor Raventstahl and Councilwoman Harris have joined together in two previous presentations to the community. They are looking for community feedback.
In addition to a soccer field, the facility might also include an indoor workout facility, basketball courts, and an outdoor walking track around the soccer field.
You can read more about the proposal at the Northside Chronicle's web site (Click Here).
We are encouraging you to support this proposal. As you know, we desperately need soccer fields on the Northside. A city-wide field study done 5 years ago indicated a shortage of 32 soccer fields cit-wide. We have NO dedicated soccer fields on the Northside.
You can show your support in three ways. The first is to any community meetings on the project. The first three were held in February and March in Brightwood, Observatory Hill, and Brighton Heights. As soon as we have dates for future meetings, we will post them here, so check back once a week or so.
The second wat to show support for the project is to send an email to Kim Graziani of the Mayor's Office Kim Graziani's Email.
The third way in which you are also asked to show your support is to go Stimuls Watch for Northside Rec Center and Soccer Field and click on the yes button to show you are in favor of this project.
When you go to the community meetings and when you email Ms. Graziani, please also let them know that having an all-weather field is preferred to a natural grass field. An all-weather field would be the same type of field that the City League teams used at Schenley Oval this year.
Please show your support and tell the city that you support this field and rec center by emailing Ms. Graziani AND going to the the Stimulus Watch web page and click yes.
