ED-WORLD TAKES THE 2009 TONY IOMMI CUP
September 29, 2009

The NYCTHA vet, who has been with us since the beginning, hams it up for the camera with his Championship Cup.

Seven diehard table hockey players mixed it up in Breezy Point NY, Saturday September 26th for the NYCTHA Heavy Metal Munro Tony Iommi Cup.  After 36 round robin matches and three rounds of playoff slugfests,
Edward emerged with the Tony Iommi Cup, crushing JP in finals 4 games to 2.  This is "Ed-World's" 1st NYCTHA Championship, and the crowd-favorite's victory over JP sent the crowd home smiling!

Edward started off the round robin with a loss to Adam, but then rolled to an 8-3 record after reeling off a five game winning streak to finish it.  He then took on #3 Joe, the warrior from the Central Pennsylvania Table Hockey League, in the semifinals.  Three one-goal game victories and a shutout eliminated Joe and put Ed into the finals for the 1st ever time in his NYCTHA career.  Edward is one of "The Magnificent Seven"--players who showed up at NYCTHA opening day back in 2006--so his appearance in the finals was a long time coming.  He would not be disappointed.
Taking on JP in the finals, a player who had beat him handily in the Round Robin twice, Edward stormed out to a 5-4 victory on JP's home ice in game one.  Then after getting beat 4-8 in game two, Edward rebounded with 4-3 and 5-3 victories to push JP to the brink.  Down 1-3, JP fought hard winning 9-8, but game six was all Edward from start to finish, winning the Tony Iommi Cup with a 6-2 game six victory!  Congratulations Edward!  You deserved your championship this day.

JP had a pretty good round robin, except for his first and last matches which were loses, he won 9 and went 9-2 for the top spot overall.  In the semifinals he met his long time rival, CPTHL rod-god Adam Z.  This series went five matches, but two were OT, with Adam winning one and losing one.  JP moved onto the finals with a dramatic 7-6 OT victory in game five after Adam had put the puck in his own net with 12 seconds left to force OT. In the finals against Edward, JP ran out of solutions.  Playing against a player who knows his offense and defense up and down, JP had to work extra hard just to stay in the series for six matches

Joe made the trip all the way from Central PA to support us, just like last June when he came in for the Breezy Point 5340.  This player had a solid round robin, going 7-4 good for a 3rd place finish. Joe has a unique style of play, unlike anyone else in the NYCTHA, so whenever we get a chance to play him, its a real treat.  Joe swept the sixth place seed, 3 games to O and then faced off against Edward in the semifinals.  Joe lost the 1st match 1-2, and could not find any offense in the 2nd, 0-5, but then gutted out a rough 4-3 win in game three.  Game four was another one-goal affair, this time Joe was at the short end, 3-4.  The hot Edward then took game five, 3-6 to send Joe to the third place match against his CPTHL rival Adam Z.  This was "anotha thrilla" between the two, but Adam scored on the last shot in OT for the 4-3 win.  Joe is on the cusp of a top three finish in NYCTHA play, and we'd love to have him join us full time.

NYCTHA loyalist John F. once again supported us and brought some spice to the show.  Right off the bat he comes from behind to defeat JP 2-1 in the opening match of the tournament.  Inconsistent play resulted in a 5-6 record, good enough for a 4th place finish (due to goal differential).  John F. has that all around board speed and is a low-tipper to boot, and he took this arsenal into his best of five playoff match with Adam Z of the CPTHL.  Game one John had all guns' abalazin' with the 5-3 win, but Adam Z has that one thing John F. lacks: experience.  Adam used this to his advantage winning game two 2-1.  Games three and four were the best two matches of the entire tournament, both were settled in OT with 4-3 scores, both lost by John F.  John did not reach his goal of an appearance in the finals, but like he always does, provided lots of excitement and lots of photos for his fellow players.  Thanks John!  See you at Vintage League in 2010.

Adam Z took advantage of the CPTHL not opening until next week to jump in an join us at the NYCTHA for some heavy metal munro action.  After taking down Edworld in the opening match of the round robin, AZ had an inconsistent round robin, defeating JP but falling to Ray.  HIs 5-6 record was good enough for only 5th place (goal differential), but he tore it up in playoffs.  Taking on NYCTHA battler John F. in the first round, Adam drops the first match but wins 3 straight one-goal games, two in OT, to eliminate him from the tournament.  JP would be his next foe, and he fought the good fight, winning one match and losing another in OT in his five game series loss. Adam met Joe for 3rd place and this cardiac kid once again takes the game to OT, this time winning it 4-3 for third place. Five (4-1) OT matches in the playoffs tells me that Adam was a goal away from going further than he did.  Thanks for coming out bro!  Now go kick some ass in the CPTHL!

Unlike Adam Z, Ray does not have all that much experience on the metal munro games, but he loves table hockey and since the NYCTHA is the place for vintage table hockey in New York City, he decided to join us and get heavy.  He played hard, he, as he likes to say, "had a ball."  OK, the wins were not many--a 1-10 finish would crush most guys, but not Ray.  No way.  He loves the game of table too much to get hung up on results.  His one win against the might Adam Z, a 5-4 shocker that woke up the sleeping giant. In the playoffs, the sixth seed got swept by Joe Gurney.  Thanks Ray!  I hear you're gearing up for Vintage League 2010--see you then!

Another of "The Magnificent Seven" who has been with us at NYCTHA since the beginning is James . . . He decided to stop by and get some matches in before going to the Yankee game, and did a full round robin, finishing 1-5, his lone win a 9-6 shootout against Ray.  This player will be a part of our upcoming metal munro league starting up in December.  Thanks for your support James!

2009 Breezy Point 5340: Steve Takes the Trophy!
July 1, 2009
Nine players met up alongside the sea in Breezy Point NY for the 2nd Annual Breezy Point 5340 Vintage Yellow Stick Hockey Tournament on Saturday June 27th.  A full round robin on four refurbished Eagle 5340 games and full playoffs resulted in Steve Dowell winning the tournament 4 games to 1 in a rematch of last year's final over Len Mecca, who went undefeated in the Round Robin.  Congratulations Steve!

There were plenty of upsets as the caliber of yellow stick hockey played on this day was the highest it has ever been in the history of the New York City Table Hockey Association.  CPTHL All-Star Joe Gurney finished third in the Round Robin, and Mark Buchalski finished fourth, despite a knee injury.  Mark came back from a 1-3 defecit in his series versus John F. to win it 4 games to 3 and finished fourth overall on the day.  James Friedl, the wily NYCTHA vet, had a rough round robin, winning only 2 matches and giving up 23 goals, but then eliminated JP in five one goal games, 4-1.  James won third place on the day, his highest ever finish in his NYCTHA career.

Thanks Adam for the 9 hours of music and for all of your help and company.  Thanks Cecilia for the wonderful cake and Mark, thanks for the sausage chili.  Thanks Len for the stiga scoreclips and Steve for bringing your game to the tournament.  Thanks Ray for the awesome trophy set that really adds atmosphere to the event.  Thanks John F. for the great photos and support.  Everyone who showed up and played this season, thanks for bringing vintage yellow stick hockey back.  We still have a long way to go, but we got off to a great start with two tournaments and a league in one year (June 2008-June2009).  Table Hockey is other people and you folks made it happen.

This tournament concludes the NYCTHA Vintage League Season . . . we will be back in the Fall for more yellow stick hockey!

Winners Announced - Glenn Anderson's “Hockey New Media Awards"

June 17, 2009

Dear Hockey Fans, Writers, and other Pioneers of the New Media Frontier,

It is with great privilege that I am writing to you today from Las Vegas to announce the winners of the First Annual Hockey New Media Awards.

Over the past year the burgeoning success of new media in sports has been something that I have viewed with great interest and intrigue. And perhaps no other sport has been as successful in using new media to its full advantage as hockey. This success is a credit to the thousands of devoted writers, video producers, fans, and other online "connectors" that have given hockey a surge of new life on the web.

With that said, I am excited to present the 2009 award winners each through a series of videos we recorded on Monday from Central Park in New York City. A big thanks to my fellow judges Eric McErlain, James Mirtle, and Scott Taylor for sharing their insight and opinion on the field of candidates, and to our sponsors Zamboni and "Glenn's Global Games" for helping to provide great prizes for our recipients.

Congratulations to all the recipients and nominees for a job well done! We look forward to seeing great things from you during the upcoming season.

Until next year, have an ice day and score your goals!

Glenn Anderson

Quintessential Quartet Closes Out 2009 Classic League Regular Season
A Fantastic Four of Super-Supporters closed out  NYCTHA 2009 Classic League Regular Season on Saturday April 25th at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island.

Once again demonstrating the irrefutable truth of the precept  "Quality, not quantity, is what matters" were Classic League diehards Lou Marinoff, Anthony Sciacca, JP and John F.  The Quartet pounded out 36 five-minute matches over three round robins for a total of 1hr and 40 minutes behind the rods.  Using a new "double-header" format where each pair played two matches back-to-back, players were able to bang out the matches quickly and the competition was intense: one match ended 0-0 (first time in Classic League History), and one player had six ties.

But the top player, winning his fourth straight Classic League date and going undfeated for the 2nd consecutive league date was Lou Marinoff (17-0-1).  Lou is now 35-0-3 in his last two league dates and enters the playoffs on a 17 game winning streak.  His only blemish was a 3-3 draw with JP in the first round robin.  Congratulations Lou and we look foward to seeing you at Classic League Playoffs.  Lou has now  won all three Classic League Regular Season Titles and is gunning for his third straight Classic Cup.

Anthony Sciacca shook off a six game losing streak early in the day to finish 2nd overall on this day (6-8-4* more wins).  Anthony broke in his new defensive scheme to shut JP out  in back to back matches, and then one more time in the day's final match.  This rivalry has broken new ground and the next chapter will be written in the first round of the playoffs, where the two will meet up with the winner advancing to the Classic League finals.  Congrats Anthony on your highest Classic League finish in three seasons!

JP was thwarted time and again by his pop-gun offense and swiss cheese defense, to finish with his worst Classic League performance in three seasons (5-7-6).  Starting his day off with a promising tie over Lou and a good start at 3-1-2, JP would go 2-6-4 in the final two round robins.  Atrocious playing coupled with marked improvement by JohnF, Lou and Anthony, means JP must pick his game up in a big way if he is to make it to the finals for the first time since April 2007.

John F. showed up for his second NYCTHA Classic League date and brought his beautiful NY Rangers "carleco" game.  Both are welcome additions to the NYCTHA Classic League, and although John F. did not win a match on this super-competitive day (0-13-5) he gave both JP and Anthony fits, as he was in every single match versus the two.  This "yellow-stick" player is still trying to locate his skills on the more primitive, closer checking 5380 game, but has the speed, tenacity and talent to be a threat in the playoffs.

I want to thank Peggy O'Neill's for hosting us and we will miss Brian/Megan/Sean/Mellissa and John this spring and summer.    Thanks also to the players who supported the abbreviated Classic League season--see you at the Playoffs!

After an inauguaral NYCTHA Vintage League season where four different players won League dates, one player won 26 matches in a row only to finish third, and another player playing in five consecutive OT matches, the unexpected was expected.  Two series went to seven games and both times the player who trailed in the series came from behind to win it.  The top seed tumbled at the end, and two "favorites" who seemed destined to meet at the finals just could not make it through.  Vintage league playoffs at Breezy Point on Saturday April 4th had it all: upsets, controversy, and lots of good times: the perfect ending to the most successful season in NYCTHA history.

Top seed and Breezy Point 5340 Champ Len Mecca (46-12-3) had to endure an excruciating bye round as #4 seed John F (23-36-8) and #5 seed Edworld (13-16-7) played in the most exciting first round series, a seven game dogfight, worthy of their intense rivalry.

Edworld got the jump on John F, taking the first two matches 4-1 and 3-1.  John F, the NYCTHA's Most Improved Player in 2008-2009, responded with a gutty 3-2 win in game three, and another one-goal slugfest, 2-1 in game four to even the series up at 2.  Game five saw Edworld emerge with the advantage after a 3-2 OT heartstopper.  This rivalry got exponentially more intense with each match . . . .  now it was up to John F to force a seventh game and he resorted to "Lou Marinoffian tactics" by swilling a can of Red Bull energy drink on the back deck prior to game six.  The tactic paid dividends (as it often does) as John won another one-goal affair, 2-1.  It was now down to one game, with the winner taking on the top seeded Len Mecca.  Anything can happen in game sevens' and John F jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Edworld could find his bearings.  Edworld made it 2-1 only to allow John F to take command once again with two more quick goals for the 4-1 lead.  Edworld mounted a fierce comeback, but could not get the fourth goal to force OT and was eliminated 4-3.  Now John F would take on top seed Len Mecca to play for the Vintage Cup, and Edworld would drop to the Second Division single--elimination round.

Not as exciting but no less important were the other two first round series: #2 seed JP (35-23-9) took on NYCTHA newcomer Ray Ruiz (#7, 0-13-1) and #3  seed Roger Owens(33-6-1) took on his buddy #6 seed and NYCTHA Vintage League's Most Gentlemanly Player,  Mark Buchalski (7-29-4).

JP had the edge from the start on his series against Ray, who had only been to a pair of Vintage League Dates and was still trying to find his way in this den of vipers.  Ray, always playing with a smile on his face, win or lose, dropped the first two matches 2-5 and 0-8, but came back at the start of game three to take a 1-0 lead before falling 2-5.  JP ended the series with an 8-2 victory as Ray dropped to the Second Division single--elimination round.

Roger and Mark have some history . . . their friendship goes back over 30 years,  but once that clock starts and the puck drops, friendship goes out the window in favor of desire and sportsmanship--the Vintage Cup is at stake people!  Roger, who won 26 consecutive Vintage League matches this season,  dominated the first two matches 5-0 and 7-2.  But Mark  has been putting time in on the 5340 and is one tough hombre.  He fought like a caged animal in game three, forcing OT only to lose 4-5.  Making the choice to die on his feet as opposed to living on his knees, Mark smacked his bitch up another level and took game four 3-2 in OT, thus avoiding the sweep.  Roger had too much firepower in game five, winning again by five in a 5-0 shutout. He would now face JP in the semis with the winner playing for the Vintage Cup.  Mark would join Ray and Edworld in the Second Division series.

#1 Len Mecca v. # 4 John F.
The Meccanisim showed no signs of rust or effects from the lengthy bye round.  Taking game one 6-1.  John F. found some offense in game two, but not enough as Len rolled 5-2.  Len would score six in game three  (6-2) and now it was up to John F. to force a game five.  John played his best game of the series, playing his rough and tumble style and defensive game, but Len had too much and advanced to the finals with a 3-1 victory.  Congratulations Len on making it to the finals for the second consecutive NYCTHA Yellow Stick event.

#2 JP v #3 Roger
Roger got the edge on JP in game one, ending the first half with a 3-0 lead.  JP had to fight for every loose puck and contend with Roger's ultra fast offense, and could not keep up, falling 2-5.  Game two saw Roger once again making his passes, making saves and simply outclassing JP all over the ice, winning this time 5-3.  JP dug in for the crucial game three, but Roger was relentless and drubbed JP 7-3.  Roger now had a formidable 3 games to none lead, and JP's hopes were on the verge of being dashed.  Game four seemed like an aberration, a 6-3 win for JP.  Game five would be the most physical and fastest, and JP barely emerged in this one, a 4-3 win.  Game six was packed with pressure, and JP got one lucky bounce after another to force a game seven, 4-0.  The bounces continued to go JP's way in the first two minutes of game seven as JP got two lucky goals for the 2-0 lead, then added two legitimate goals for the 4-0 lead.  The first half ended at 4-1 for JP.  Could Roger regain his momentum?  He scored two beautiful goals in the first two minutes of the second half, but it was not enough as JP just did squeak by 4-3 to make it to the finals for the first time since April 2007.

Elite Divison Third Place
#3 Roger v #4 John F
Another rivalry, Roger had a score to settle with the player who ended the streak at Date VI.  John F, always a ferocious competitior, simply could not keep up with the pissed-off Roger, falling 2-8.  Roger, in a fit of humor, commented after the match that his goal was to defeat John F in the 3rd place match.  Will these two rivals meet up at the Breezy Point 5340 Saturday June 27th?  I hope so!
Roger 8 John F 2

Second Division Single Elimination Round
#6 Mark v. #7 Ray
This matchup was for the right to play Edworld for the  Vintage League Second Division Medal.  Mark, the more experienced of the two players (40 matches played to 14 for Ray), nonetheless played with verve and emotion.  Ray competed hard with a smile and could not put the biscuit in the basket when he needed, and Mark emerged with a 3-1 win.
Mark 3 Ray 1

Second Division Final
# 5 Edworld v #6 Mark
The two Suffolk County neighbors would now face off for the prestigious NYCTHA Second Divsion Medal.  Mark could not make his passes on the blue game, and Edworld took full advantage, tieing the match up with 13 seconds left to force OT.  Ed then potted the game winner.
Edworld 2 Mark 1 OT

NYCTHA Vintage League Final: #1 Len  v #2 JP
The two would meet up after going 4-4-2 versus one another in the regular season
Game One
A slow paced defensive match, where both players were wise to the others' plays and schemes, the first and second halves ended without a goal being scored.  1:48 into OT, Len potted a short side right-winger shot from the circle for the win.
Len 1 JP 0 OT (1:48)
Game Two
This match was rife with controversy from start to finish.  Playing on his least favorite of the NYCTHA Vintage League games, Len could not do anything with his left D and his center was just not right either.  Len still controlled this match from the start, jumping out to a one goal lead and JP using a low tip late in the 1st half to tie it up.  The 2nd half continued with Len controlling play, but JP starting to find his way amid the blitzkrieg of shots he faced.  Playing a defensive game, JP forced OT.  In OT the worst case scenario occurred, not just for Len but for both players.  16 seconds in, JP batted at a rebound and the puck seemingly went in and out.  Forced to make a snap call, the Referee said the puck was in and the goal counted . . . .
Len 1 JP 2 OT (:16)
Game Three
Back on the "Thill Game" game three finally saw both teams open up their offenses and it was easily the fastest and best played match of the series thus far.  Len still controlled the puck and had the majority of chances, but his down low game was not as efficient as it had been earlier in the day.  JP was now making his passes and getting his shots on goal, and the 4-2 victory gave the series lead to JP.
Len 2 JP 4
Game Four
Game four was a dogfight, but once again it was JP who got the bounces.  Coming from behind to tie the match up at 3, Len shot a bullet at JP's net; JP's goalie slid over in desperation to make the save, but the puck bounced directly into Len's net, a patented "Frasier Strain" goal with less than a minute left.  Roger Owens lamented: "The stars are in perfect alignment for johnny."
Len 3 JP 4
Game Five
The bounces.  Table Hockey is a cruel sport.  Sometimes the best players are victimized by them and today was no different.  Len played like the champion he is in the first half, giving it his all despite fatigue and an elbow injury, but the table hockey gods were shining on the #2 seed.  JP was now getting to all the lose pucks and every time he took a shot, it was on goal.  JP jumped out to a 5-0 lead and Len potted a late goal but the series was over.  JP wins the Vintage Cup 4 games to 1.
JP 5 Len 1

Super Eight Puts On The Foil At Vintage League Date VI
March 10, 2009

The Super 8 ends NYCTHA Vintage League regular season Saturday at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island.
from left: Roger, Anthony, Ray, Edworld, Len, Mark, John (JP took the photo).

It was a battle to the end . . . Eight Players met up at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island on Saturday March 7th for some superb yellow stick table hockey.  56, ten-minute matches over two round robins on four Eagle 5340 games , resulted in 2 hours and 20 minutes behind the rods for each player.  Most of the  matches were super--intense dogfights as players bore down and played tight, defensive, playoff style hockey (scoring went down from 5.59 GPG at Date V to 5.09 in Date VI, a 1/2 GPG decrease and the first one all season).  Three players had three shutouts each, and three more had two--one player played a  record 5 overtime games, four of them in a row!  But the highlight of this great day was John Fayolle's come--from behind 4-3 victory to end Roger Owen's 26 game winning streak.  JP then went on a 8 game winning streak, only for John Fayolle to score with 19 seconds left in the 2nd half to force the tie and end  another winning streak--would you like to face this guy in a 7 game series?  Not me!

It took almost all season, but JP finally found his game.  12-1-1 on the day, sweeping Len Mecca (3-2/4-2), splitting with Roger Owens (1-5/3-2) and winning 8 in a row, the stars were in perfect alignment as all the rest of the players were exhausted from traffic and travel.

Roger Owens scored 65 goals for the second league date in a row, swept Len Mecca (4-2/6-4), split with JP, won another OT game for his record fourth OT victory, but alas, the streak ended at 26, one shy of Lou Marinoff's NYCTHA Record of 27 in a row.  This player's offense is truly explosive: he has scored 130 goals in his last 28 matches and has yet to lose in OT; on top of that, he gives up  a measly just over 2 GPG and has won championships before.  Thanks Roger for your support--see you at the playoffs April 4th!

Len Mecca had a rough day behind the rods . . . . battling injury and fatigue The Rodwarrior got swept by Roger and JP and ended his day at 10-4.  His first match with JP was typical of his day  . . . up 2-0 early, Len was not able to get that third goal and JP tied it up.  Late in the 2nd half,  The Meccanisim is digging deep into his bag of tricks, only to accidentally score on himself--so he did get the third goal, but it was for JP, a truly discouraging loss.  But first place overall belong to him--and rightfully so--as we head into the playoffs.  This wily, old tablehockey pro is gunning for the Vintage Cup and so far the road to the cup goes through the Rodwarrior.  Thanks Len!

Anthony Sciacca was just one goal away from finishing 9-5 . . . . his 5-5-4 day was historic nevertheless.  Five OT matches, including four in a row,  are NYCTHA Records.  If this player could only diversify his offense, he would elevate his game and become a major threat.  Anthony tied Roger (3-3) after Roger pasted him 0-8.  With three shutouts on the day, Anthony has a record 16 shutouts out of 52 matches this season.  Another opponent to avoid in the first round of the playoffs, Anthony has proven he can shut guys down--but can he get the goals in the playoffs?  Thanks Anthony for your support!

John Fayolle played some great table hockey at NYCTHA Vintage League Date VI, but his consistency was not there for him as he ended his day at 5-6-3.  Coming back from an 0-2 defecit to end Roger's streak in the 4-3 win seemed to take all the power from his game; but he dug deep in his second match versus JP to end his winning streak with a late goal and then dominated OT, but JP hung on for the tie.  Another player whose defense is ahead of his offense, John F will surge from time to time and slay the dragon, but you got to always be at the top of your game in the playoffs. Thanks John!

Mark Buchalski had quite the eventful day at NYCTHA Vintage League Date VI.  He took down a gung-ho John Fayolle 3-2,  tied Anthony 2-2, defeated Edward 3-2 and for good measure shut-out NYCTHA Vintage League newcomer Ray Ruiz 1-0.  His 4-9-1 record was impressive in that he showed enormous improvement and increased enthusiasm for yellow stick hockey--he even gave our lady bartender Megan some lessons on yellow stick hockey!  It is great to see a player take a game home on loan and actually practice on it.  Mark will be even better for playoffs on April 4th.  Thanks Mark!

Edworld the Enigma once again baffles the masses . . . finishing 3-8-3 after his Date V performance where he went 7-5-2 is puzzling; he has the defense and the skill to do better, but the Vintage League keeps getting stronger every month.Managing only a tie in his first six matches,   Edworld  wins against Roger 2-1 to open the 2nd Round Robin, but then loses to Len (1-5) and JP (2-6) who he swept last month.  On the bright side, he finished his day with two wins and a tie and will not be an easy foe for the playoffs, and could be a threat if he finds his offense.  Muchas gracias hermano!

Ray Ruiz came down  to Coney Island from the Bronx to play the game he played when he was a kid.  You see, one day while Ray was on his lunch break, he saw this table hockey game in the window, the G-155 (big nets/goal--lights behind the nets/yellow stick players/diamond puck).  It was love at first sight: he walked in the shop, and paid a down-payment on the G-155.  He was the only kid in the neighborhood with a table hockey game, and all of his friends would stay over at his parents house playing him on this game deep into the night until his parents would have to throw them out!

Ray had an absolute ball on Saturday . . . OK, he did not win a match (0-13-1), but he was just so full of excitement and enthusiasm and that really spread to all the other players, especially those players who were not having success behind the rods.  We are thrilled to have this gentleman with us at the NYCTHA.  Thanks for your support Ray!  See you at NYCTHA Vintage League playoffs on April 4th.

Thanks to Megan and Bob and Brian at Peggy O'Neill's for hosting us.  It was one of the best days of table hockey that I ever had.  Every single player who has played in the Vintage League this season has been two things: a Character and a Gentleman.  I am grateful for your support.

Furious Five Rampage at NYCTHA 2009 Classic League Date II
February 22, 2009

The "furious five" outside of NYCTHA Headquarters after a full session of 5380 hockey at Classic League
Date II, February 21, 2009.  From Left: Mark
Buchalski, Greg Scoma, Lou Marinoff, JP, Anthony Sciacca.

It was a tournament--like feel at NYCTHA 2009 Classic League Date II  . . . Five fanatics showed up and rumbled for 50 matches over five round robins.  20 matches per player on a pair of custom coleco 5380's resulted in 1:40  behind the rods for each player; at the end of the day,  Lou Marinoff took the top spot, losing  just one of 20 matches (4-8 to JP).  Lou scored 146  goals for a GPG of 7.30, and his defense resulted in 6 shutouts.  Great playing Lou:  you have set the standard very high mon ami!

Greg Scoma drove in from Mt. Vernon VA, his first NYCTHA league date since the playoffs last April, and he did not skip a beat: sweeping JP (3-0-2) and tieing Lou twice, Greg used his diverse offense and pico shots to finish 13-3-4 on the day, with three shutouts.  He is the proud new owner of four custom coleco 5380 games that hopefully will result in another classic league down by the Nation's capital--we can only hope our prayers will be answered!

JP had another mediocre day behind the rods, taking the third spot, but had a blast with the boys nonetheless.  It was great to see Greg and new Classic League player Mark Buchalski hit it off and everyone else have fun--win or lose.  Thanks for your support guys!

Anthony "was that an in and out?" Sciacca grinded out 4 wins and 2 ties on a game that has been unlucky for him this season, but you would never know it by his demeanor: Anthony is  a "player's player."  The rivalry between JP and Anthony is always dramatic and fun, and I see another one cropping up between him and Greg, but Anthony plays hard all the time and its fantastic to hear "gee whiz!" at NYCTHA Headquarters once a month in the winter: Thanks Anthony!

Mark Buchalski had so much fun with us over at the NYCTHA Vintage League, that he decided to try out the NYCTHA 2009 Classic League . . . man did he get a taste!  Playing the likes of Lou Marinoff, Greg Scoma and Anthony Sciacca five times each on the custom coleco is not for the faint of heart, but Mark's a tough guy and even though he may have taken his lumps, you would never know it . . .   OK, he had a really rough day behind the rods, but he had fun also----what table hockey is all about. Thanks Mark.

2009 Classic League Date II is now in the books . . . . It was fast, furious, and fun: Join us on Saturday March 14th as we do it all over again!  More photos in PHOTO ALBUM.

Yellow Stick Smack-Down at NYCTHA Vintage League Date V
February 9, 2009

The "Outrageous Octet" at NYCTHA Vintage League Date V: from left; Edward, Sully, Len, John Fayolle, Bob,
Mark, Roger, (kneeling) JP.  Get in the picture--join us at NYCTHA Vintage League Date VI, March 7th!

There are some days that you wish could go on forever and never end, and NYCTHA Vintage League Date V was just such a day.  An outrageous octet of vintage table hockey players met up at NYCTHA headquarters in Breezy Point NY and orchestrated an opus of a table hockey day.  Each player got in 14 ten-minute matches for a total of 2 hours and twenty minutes behind the rods.  But by far, the star of this show was the eminent Roger Owens, who went UNDEFEATED, 14-0, to extend his record 20 game winning streak.

Roger, who in his 2nd Vintage League Date now sits at second place overall, took down Vintage League heavyweight Len Mecca twice, both times in OT, swept Bob Cuozzo (5-3/4-2) and took out JP 7-6 in the date's final match, to complete his perfect day, at 14-0.  "The Statue" potted 65 goals, averaged 4.64 gpg, and was his usual  modest,  gentlemanly self.  "I've never done this before"  Roger told the rest of the players as they congratulated him: well now you have, my friend.  The question is: can you do it again?  Great job Roger

Len Mecca played some great table hockey on Saturday, but unfortunately he is just too good a teacher for his own good: Every single player in the NYCTHA is a better player because of him, and his 9-3-2 record is none the less impressive.  Two tough OT losses to the sizzling-hot Roger Owens, plus two more OT games, prove that Len is definitely a target.  After dropping his first match, he took down Bob Cuozzo, dominated JP, and almost beat Roger twice.  Stingy defense and methodical play are Len's forte, and the rivlary between Roger and Len and Len and JP push all the players.  Great job Len!

It was bound to be a special league date since Bob Cuozzo finally made his way to the NYCTHA.  We haven't seen Bob since the NYCTHA International Classic back in September of 2007, and it was definitely worth the wait.  Despite fatigue from his travel (he came in from West Haven, CT), "The Cuozz" won 9 of 14 matches good for third place overall.  With big wins over Len and sweeping JP, Bob showed he still has his game.  Goal scoring was a bit of a problem due to his rust, but he fought the good fight and deserved his top three finish on a day where the skill level was at its highest.  Thanks Cuozz for taking the trip down to the NYCTHA.  We loved having you and hope you can make it down again this season!

There are days when its better to keep your trap shut and listen to Lou Marinoff whose adage "All problems begin at the mouth" is  usually heeded only after it is too late . . .
Edward is playing his brother JP--the game is in the 2nd half and its a one goal game . . . at this point,  Edward--who is known for using outrageous tactics to win table hockey matches (just ask Roger Owens about the chicken fat episode)--asks his brother, who is trailing "should I let you win this game?  I mean, you will have more of a chance to win the date if I do."  JP foolishly takes the bait and responds "No, you better score again because it might be the only game you win all day."  Woe is JP.  Edward wins that match, 4-3 and then completes the sweep against his brother (2-1) enroute to a 7-5-2 record and fourth overall!  Ed, who only plays yellow-stick hockey to be with the guys, was shooting pucks from everywhere, shutting out Bob 4-0, pasting John Fayolle 6-1, and tieing The Rodwarrior himself 1-1.  It was a magical day for the man . . . good job my brudda!

John Fayolle played some great table hockey at NYCTHA Vintage League Date V.  Finishing fifth at 6-7-1--his most wins in one date all season thus far--shows the great progress that this dedicated NYCTHA supporter has made since he joined us last October.   John also tied the great Len Mecca (3-3) and beat Bob Cuozzo 2-1.  The first to arrive and help out at the venue, John is a big part of the NYCTHA and we are happy to have him with us.  Thanks John!

Ever hear that cliche--"Be careful what you ask for since you might just get it?"  Well JP got it alright--and good!  On a day where he could have claimed 2nd place overall due to Anthony Sciacca's absence, JP got kicked from one corner of NYCTHA headquarters to the other all day long.  By the time he got his bearings, he was duking it out with Roger Owens in the days final match, trying to end his streak, but failing in a colossal dogfight, 6-7, to finish the day an atrocious 5-8-1.  3 of his 14 matches went to OT on this day, where he finally won his first and second OT games (2-0-1).  The loss against Roger, while painful, was a bright spot and gives this slumping player a shred of confidence going into the Vintage League's final regular season Date on March 7th.

Mark "BoooK--A-Boom" Buchalski showed up for the second date this season and was his usual jovial self.  This player loves the sport of table hockey and his enthusiasm rubs off on the rest of the players resulting in a great vibe.  He came back from a 2-4 defecit in the  2nd round robin to force JP to OT, (one of the best matches of the day) and defeated fellow league rookie Sully to finish 1-11-2 on the day.  This Bernie Parent fan competes like a Flyer and conducts himself like a Ranger, and will be a force to reckon with once he gets some more experience.  Its a tough league, and Mark is a huge part of it.

All the way from Connecticut to NYCTHA Headquarters in Breezy Point came Sully, wearing his Penguins jersey and showing  his colors.  This player used to play on the Eagle 5330 with the left handed center, and he loves yellow-stick hockey!  Forcing JP to score a goal late and escape with a tie (1-1), Sully has the moves and the board awareness to be a threat, but he needs to find his timing and that will come.   His first win still eludes him, but every single player hopes that he will make the trek south on March 7th and join us again at NYCTHA Date VI.  You best come back, ya hear?

56 ten-minute matches were played over two round robins on four Eagle 5340 games at NYCTHA League Date V.  Our next league date, Saturday March 7th is our FINAL REGULAR SEASON DATE.  Since players need one appearance to be eligible for the playoffs in April,  this will be your last chance to jump in and have some fun with us.  Please email me at colecojohnny@yahoo.com if you want to play some Vintage table hockey with us on Saturday March 7th.  Its as fun as it looks, my friends!

Fearsome Foursome Clashes at 2009 Classic League Opening Day
January 29, 2009

The fantastic four at 2009 Classic League Opening Day in beautiful Breezy Point; from left: Lou Marinoff,
JP, Edworld, Anthony Sciacca . . . get in the picture--join us at 2009 Classic League Date II February 21st!

A Fearsome Foursome of Classic (custom coleco 5380) players met up at NYCTHA headquarters in Breezy Point on Saturday January 17th and belted out 42 five--minute matches (21 per player).
Lou Marinoff picked up where he left off after last season, winning his last 19 matches in a row after two loses to JP. Lou scored 132 goals at a rate of over six per game, and had four shutouts.  Congratulations Lou on getting your groove back!

JP started his day off right with a couple of wins over NYCTHA Champ Lou Marinoff, but could not recapture the magic afterwards, losing five straight to Lou and finishing his day 14-7 (after a 6-0 start).  Getting back on the custom coleco games after a long hiatus (Sherbrooke in November) was very exciting and both the games and the players were top notch.

NYCTHA diehard Anthony Sciacca was hard pressed to find the success he has been having lately in the NYCTHA Vintage League, where he is in 2nd place and leads the league with 13 shutouts in 38 matches; on the custom coleco, Anthony did not find his way until the tenth or eleventh match, but after that he was his usual tough game.  Finishing third is something new for Anthony, but he will be a threat on February 21st.  Thanks for all your support my friend!

Well, well, well . . . . it took some persuasion, but finally at long last Edward showed up at an NYCTHA League date and really added to the mix.  No, there wasn't any chicken--fat--on--the--rods episodes, but the usual shennanigans were in play during the day, and he even beat his brother for the first  time ever on the custom coleco in a dramatic, tense match.  OK, three wins in 21 matches is not exactly elite leve table hockey, but Edward is a damn fine player in his own right, and if he practiced like Lou and JP do, he would be right there at the top.  Thanks for your support bro!

NYCTHA Classic League Opening day was a success despite the numbers--it was an intimate, fast paced date with 21 matches for each player.  The number of players really shouldn't matter--and frankly the guys could not care less about them.  We had fun and got some great table hockey in.  NYCTHA CLASSIC LEAGUE DATE II IS SATURDAY FEBRUARY 21st, 11:30AM.  If you want to have fun playing table hockey on some top notch games, then come visit us!

SERENDIPITOUS SEVEN SLAMS AWAY IN BROOKLYN!
January 4, 2009
The "Serendipitous Seven" from left: John Fayolle, Len "The Rod Warrior" Mecca, Mark Buchalski, Anthony Sciacca,
James Friedl and Roger Owens (JP took the photo).  Get in the picture: Join us at NYCTHA Vintage League Date V, Feb. 7th!

Seven strong players showed up at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island for NYCTHA Vintage League Date IV and banged and crashed out 42 ten-minute matches of yellow stick hockey.  When the dust settled and the final handshakes were over, Len "The Rod Warrior" Mecca's winning streak was snapped at 12 games, by Roger Owens, who started his own 6 game winning streak!

The Rod Warrior went 10-2 on this day, for his second consecutive and third overall League Date title (I, III, IV).  Starting his day off winning six straight games including wins over Roger (2-1), Anthony and JP (the last two shutouts), it looked like Len was going to go undefeated.  But after a pizza break between round robins, Len took it on the chin, falling to Roger Owens 2-4 and the streak was snapped.  Len promptly won his next four in a row before falling to the "cornered rat" that was JP, 4-5.  Bravo Len Mecca!

Among the table hockey professionals, there are certain tenets, certain expressions,  that while pithy, express volumes of information and wisdom.  One such tenet, coined by table hockey historian and sage Thomas Mulrain, is : "Roger Knows!"   The Magnificent Roger Owens strolled into Peggy O'Neill's on Saturday, and after about one round robin, found his game, defeating Len Mecca and winning his last six games in a row (3 of them shutouts) to finish 9-3 on the day.   After scoring just 1 and 2 goals in his first two matches, Roger scores 8, 7, and 7 goals in his next three; then he takes down Len and wins his last six--the man is just a machine. Did I mention he set a new record for goals scored (49) and goals scored per game (4.08)?  What an addition to any table hockey League!  Encore Roger!

The "Old Man" of the NYCTHA sure is stingy!  Anthony Sciacca finishes Date IV at 7-4-1, with three shutouts: he only gave up 15 goals in 12 ten--minute matches!!!  "Stingy Sciacca " solidified his reputation for tough, but fair, table hockey, shutting out both Roger Owens and JP.  Anthony now takes a strong grasp on the coveted #2 ranking, and it looks like he is just coming into his own after a rough Date III.  I pity the fool who does not have a plan when he plays Anthony. Thanks so much for your solid support Anthony!  You are a gem!

Here we go again (I'll keep it brief.)  JP shows up at Date IV and, just like last time, has to play the game of his life to finish at .500.  Despite tremendous wins over Roger Owens (8-7 dogfight!) and Len Mecca (5-4 thrilla!), JP gets swept by the voracious John Fayolle (2-4 and I was up 2-0!; 1-2), shut out by the "Old Man" 0-1, and even newcomer Mark Buchalski got his fangs into JP's hide with a 3-3 OT tie.  Will this player ever wake up and find his game????  It was a great league date though . . . what a jump in skill by ALL OF THE PLAYERS!

John Fayolle is a man on a mission.  OK, Okay--he goes 4-7-1 on the day, hardly an indication of his skill and desire.  He sweeps JP, ties Anthony, and loses a tough hand--to--hand battle with Len (1-2), but he's RIGHT THERE.  Just a goal away from being up with the Mecca's, Sciacca's and Owens'.  John has been to every NYCTHA League date and event from October.

James Friedl just loves the sport of table hockey.  For him, and us at the NYCTHA, whenever we have the good fortune to come together and worship at the altar of table hockey, it is simply delightful.  Record, Shmecord!  OK, he went 2-9-1, losing two games by a goal and tieing JP up with 10 seconds left the 2nd half (rats!)  But he's there--there for us and for the sport and its always more fun and more tightly played when the man shows.  He can play this game, but most importantly, he LOVES playin' it, so much so that when the success isn't there, the fun always is.  Mucho gracias, Amigo: Usted es muy lindo!

Mark Buchalski is one tough hombre.  Case in point: he shows up and plays in the Newark Benej tournament with a broken wrist suffered in a motorcycle crash.  No problem.  The Doctor told him " You can't play on Saturday!"  Oh yeah, Doc??
Mark's known Roger for "over thirty years" and it shows: the man's got class, and he's a damn good player too!  Yeah, he goes 2-9-1 on the day, but this ain't some schwag table hockey league here in NYC, folks:  its rough out there!  He wins his first match against killer shark John Fayolle, but slowly the yellow stick style of table hockey is coming to him.  Then he comes back to tie JP 3-3, then beats James 4-3.  Lets throw the stats out the window: it was great meeting this player.  He loves the game, fits right in with the guys, and we are ecstatic to have him with us: another great addition to any table hockey league!  Thanks Mark!

NYCTHA Vintage League Date IV was a tremendous blast.  You guys made this day sparkle from beginning to end.  Thanks Armando and Sean at PEGGY O'NEILL'S  for your great hospitality.  Thanks to all of the players for traveling to the NYCTHA, and for providing each other with some of the best table hockey of the season.  See you FEBRUARY 7th for NYCTHA VINTAGE LEAGUE DATE V!

Roger "The Statue" Owens is seen here putting an end to Len "The Rod Warrior" Mecca's 12 game winning streak.

The Fightin' Five Rumble in Coney: NYCTHA Vintage League Date III
December 8, 2008

Len "The Rod Warrior" Mecca returns to the NYCTHA Vintage League and goes 11-1 to win his 2nd league date;
can anyone jam the meccanisim's control over the NYCTHA Vintage League?????

A fanatical five met up and played 30 matches over three round robins on a trio of refurbished Eagle 5340 games with yellow stick players at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island on Saturday.  Scoring shot up from 2.8 GPG at Date II in November to 4.4 GPG--a 1.6 GPG increase.  Len Mecca , for the second time this season, took the top spot finishing 11-1, including winning his last six matches in a row.  The Meccanisim potted 45 goals in 12 matches, losing only to JP in the 2nd round.  The Rod Warrior has set the NYCTHA Vintage League gold standard, leaving off from his Breezy Point Vintage Championship back in June.  Can anyone slow this Wily Meccanisim down??  Bravo Len !

JP finished "first loser" for the second time in three league dates.  Wildly inconsistent on this day--giving up 28 goals in 12 matches and losing his next two matches after his victory versus Len -- shows that this is a player in search of his game.  The 6-5-1 record and 2nd place finish was in jeopardy until the final match of the third round, where JP won his match against a weary John Fayolle.

John "Rock and Roll" Fayolle continued his ascent in the NYCTHA Vintage League standings, finishing a respectable 5-6-1--good for third overall-- and threatening an even better 2nd place finish until his loss to JP in the third round, 0-5.  John defeated JP in the first round, 4-2 and lost to JP in the 2nd round in a controversial match (a partial JP ruled an in--and--out no goal in a 2-3 match).  Wins over Date II Top Dog Anthony Sciacca (2-1, 2-1) and a one goal loss to Len (2-3) show that this player--who only started playing yellow-stick hockey in October--is very dangerous and is on the brink of making a run.  ROCK AND ROLL! Mr. Fayolle

Alas, the stay at the NYCTHA Penthouse is most fleeting and treacherous, as Vintage League Date II Top Dog Anthony Sciacca learned at Date III.  The Vintage League record-setter (undefeated day/six shutouts in one date) took it on the chin,  losing his first two Date III matches and finishing 4-6-2, good for fourth place.  Anthony played stellar defensively, shutting out 2 players and defeating JP 3-2, but the offense was not there while everyone else was scoring goals on this day.  18 goals in 12 matches is not enough offense, but I'm certain that Mr" Was that an in and out??" will find his game and bounce back in a big way at NYCTHA Date IV--thanks for your support Anthony!

James Friedl showed up and does what he does best: fight the good fight.  OK, so Jim only had one victory on this day--a tremendous 4-2 win over JP, but he shut out Date II winner Anthony Sciacca 0-0 OT, and tied "Rock and Roll" Fayolle 1-1.  This player is another one on the verge of making a run and has yet to show us his best game.  James is a diehard supporter of the NYCTHA and we are genuinely grateful for his support and the support of his beautiful wife Cecilia, who we love to see at the NYCTHA.

Thanks Bob and Brian and Armando at Peggy O'Neill's for your terrific hospitality--you guys are the best!

NYCTHA VINTAGE LEAGUE DATE IV IS SATURDAY JANUARY 3rd, 11:30 AM at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island.

NYCTHA VINTAGE LEAGUE DATE II: ANTHONY SCIACCA!!!!
November 9, 2008

Anthony "was that an in and out?" Sciacca, NYCTHA Classic League  2007-2008 Most
Gentlemanly Player, makes NYCTHA History at Vintage League Date II.  Bravo Tony!

A "Ferocious Five" Quintet of vintage table hockey players met up and bare--knuckled brawled for 20 matches over two round robins at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island Saturday November 1st, but it was "All Saints Day" as Anthony Sciacca bludgeoned the competition, going 5-0-3 with Six shutouts and making history as the 2nd player in NYCTHA history (and first ever in the Vintage League) to have an undefeated League Date.

The date started off in bizzare fashion as three consecutive 0-0 overtime ties were played; scoring on this day was very very tough as the players have become more acclimated to the 5340 surface and each other's plays.  Competition was at an all time high at League date II.  But one player stood out above all the others.  Anthony Sciacca gave up only three goals in 8 games (for a miniscule GAA of 0.37).  He came back from a 2-1 defecit in the only game he was losing to tie JP up with a minute on the clock; in the second round rematch, after losing the lead with 4 seconds left, Anthony ended JP's hopes at a first place finish with a dramatic right wing to center low tip with 10 seconds left in OT.  For good measure he shut out a hungry, intense John "my last name rhymes with goal" Fayolle, 4-0 to end his day on top.  Bravo Anthony!

Edworld Power began his day with a 2-0-1 streak, then ran into his brother and dropped his first match 0-3 "a game I should have won" he says.  He would later get his revenge defeating JP for the first time ever in NYCTHA League play (Classic and Vintage) 2-1 in the second round.  Ed had two shutouts on the day and finished at 3-3-2 for his highest ever NYCTHA ranking (2nd place).

JP had his worst day in NYCTHA history; no excuses, he was just crap on this day, finishing a dismal 2-3-3, and losing in OT to Anthony Sciacca after tieing up their 2nd round match with 4 seconds left.  Losing to Edworld, Jerome and Anthony , all one goal games, and managing only to tie John Fayolle (whose game is much improved) has only made this table hockey fanatic hungrier.  While it was his worst day on the game, it was the most fun league date of the season thus far, as other players have made great progress and everyone seemed to have a really fun (if at times rollicking) day.

Jerome Ellison traveled in from Philadelphia to play some puck with his NYCTHA buddies.  Jerome, one of the "Magnificent Seven" NYCTHA Original Players, made his first NYCTHA League appearance in over a year and played really well despite his 2-4-2 record.  He defeated JP 2-1, tied Anthony 0-0, and in perhaps the most exciting and intensely played match of the day, scored a goal with 2 seconds left to defeat John Fayolle.  The venue was buzzing with energy and intensity during this dogfight!  Thanks Jerome for driving 2 hours each way to play with us!  It was terrific to see you again!  Hope to see you on December 6th!

John "my last name rhymes with goal" Fayolle once again supported the NYCTHA and showed his rapid improvement.  John played two hard fought OT ties with JP, defeated a hot Edworld 2-1 and then took down his newest rival, Jerome 2-1.  In the second round robin, John went 2-1-1, playing his best table hockey since joining the NYCTHA, until he met the ageless wonder Anthony in the date's final match, a 0-4 loss.
John is very hungry and loves table hockey with a passion; he is making plans to attend the Sherbrooke Open Custom Coleco Tournament on Saturday November 15th alongside NYCTHA Vets JP and Greg Scoma.  Thanks for your support John!

It was a terrific day of table hockey.   We look forward to seeing you  on Saturday December 6th for NYCTHA Vintage League Date III--can Anthony keep his undefeated streak going??????

ORIGINAL SIX PLAYS HEAVY METAL IN CONEY

A strong Six Pack of intrepid players met up and banged out 21 matches at NYCTHA Vintage League Opening day over at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island.

Playing on refurbished 5340 games using the vintage yellow stick players and "diamond" puck, the solid six played from 11:30 to 5:30, enjoying a nice lunch break between first and second round robins.

Len Mecca won the day, going 6-2-1 with big wins over Anthony Sciacca 2-1 (avenging a 2-4 loss) and a great tie with only 10 seconds left versus a hot JP.  Len, the Breezy Point 5340 Champion, was the first to arrive at Peggy's and did a great job helping to set up and break down the games.

Anthony Sciacca showed up and impressed everyone with his improved skill level.  Mr "Was that an in and out" has been playing all summer long and his offense from the right wing was a threat all day long.  Tony finished a solid 4-2 and upset Len in the opening match, 4-2.  Thanks Anthony for your support my friend!

James Friedl once again supports the NYCTHA.  James showed up and took down JP in a thrilling 5-4 match, and the rematch was a 2-1 dogfight.  Jim has a real talent at this game (he finished a solid 3-5), and his defense is just outstanding.  All of his matches on the day were intense and very fast.  It was great seeing him after we missed him for last year's playoffs.  It was great seeing Cecilia as well . . . !

Douglas Ljungkvist has not played table hockey in 30 years . . . . born and raised in Sweden, his first game was the Vintage stiga (no play behind the net) and he had to make the opposite adjustment-- going from being used to having the goalie on the side-- to the goalie in the middle on the 5340.  Once he did that, every single 5 minute segment you could see his game just improve by leaps and bounds.  "I'm not used to the sticks being this long--hey, that was my puck!" was a common epithet during his matches.  Douglas, a professional photographer, took lots of photos and we are looking forward to seeing some of them in the coming days.  Never mind the 1-6 record folks; this guy can move the puck with the best of them.

From the moment John Fayolle walked into Peggy O'Neill's around noon on Saturday, to the time he left around 6PM, there was enthusiasm and excitement.  JF was born in Quebec, raised in NYC, and LOVES table hockey with a passion.  His first game was Munro--and he plays like it!  A very very physical player who is not averse to trash talk (taking it or dishing it out!) John went 1-6 on the day but after every match he reminded himself that "there is only one way to go--UP!!"  This die-hard Ranger fan has purchased a custom coleco and has designs on organizing a table hockey tournament in Manhattan along with the NYCTHA "in the coming months."

Our buddies from Peggy O'Neill's were all there to greet us on Saturday, Manuel, Bob the Chef and Sean the Bartender.  We had a great meal of deluxe cheeseburgers and fries, along with some great beverages and awesome service.  We are thrilled  to see our friends from Coney Island again and invite you to join us at Peggy O'Neill's this season for a really really fun day of table hockey on Saturday November 1st!

LOU MARINOFF IS THE 2007-2008 NYCTHA CLASSIC CUP CHAMPION
April 28, 2008

Simply the best.  Lou Marinoff hoists his second consecutive NYCTHA Classic Cup
at NYCTHA Classic League playoffs April 26, 2008

Lou Marinoff swept a hot "Sabre in Virginia" 2-1, 5-1, 5-2, 6-2 to win his Second Consecutive NYCTHA Classic Cup Championship Saturday April 26th at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island NY.

"Sweet" Lou knocked out  John Labianca in the Round of 8 4-0, then Roger Owens in the semifianls, 4 games to 2 and now is the undisputed Champion of Classic Table Hockey in New York City.  Congratulations Lou.  All this NYC Champion needs is to win a Quebec Tournament and his resume as a champ will be complete.  Lou has supported the NYCTHA Classic League right from the start, competing in our inaugural Event, "The Original Six Classic" in September 2006, our Inaugural League date a month later and has only missed one league date in two seasons.  Besides being a champion on the tables, Lou has served the NYCTHA well as Honorary Commissioner.  Thanks Lou for it all.

"Sabre in Virginia" made it to his first NYCTHA Finals by knocking out a hot AJ Sarma in the Round of Eight, 4 games to 2; then he took on his nemesis JP in the semifinals and battled back from a 2-3 defecit to knock JP out in OT of game 7 (JP's first OT loss all year!)  "Sabre" has also been with NYCTHA right from the start, helping to organize the Original Six Classic, the NYCTHA International Classic (September 2007) and served as NYCTHA Classic League Vice-President, handling stats, website and other organizational chores.  This player will go the extra mile for anyone and we are fortunate and grateful for his work and skill.  Congratulations "Sabre."  "Sabre in Virginia" is planning to organize a custom coleco tournament here in NY in October, please email him for details at sabre_in_virginia@yahoo.com

Roger Owens, the Legendary Table Hockey Pro had a tough day behind the rods, but he still finished 3rd Place in the Elite Division for the second season in a row.  Roger mowed down his pesky rival Edward in the Round of Eight 6-3, 3-2, 6-1 and 7-3.  But in the Semis, he ran into the buzzsaw that was Lou, dropping the series 4 games to 2.  Roger is the only player to defeat Lou in the NYCTHA Playoffs through two seasons.  Roger then obliterated a weary JP for third place, 7-3 and 5-3.  This player has tremendous class, tremendous skill and is  part of the reason the NYCTHA was founded.  Thanks Roger for your support and friendship!

Rounding out the top four in the Elite on this day was JPJP finished second overall and so had to play Adam Zawislak coming out of the Playoff Round Robin.  Adam took a 2 games to 1 lead in the series before the pasta lunch was served.  After the pasta, JP won 3 in a row to take a very tough series as Adam played awesome.
Then in the Semis, JP ran into "Sabre in Virginia" and despite a 3 games to 2 lead, lost two in a row to get bounced.  JP has no regrets however, and is grateful to all the players for a great two years as NYCTHA GM.  JP will be stepping down as NYCTHA GM and hopes that his fellow players will assume his role as organizer of the Classic League for the 2008-2009 season.  Thanks Guys for the great plaque and for your friendship over two seasons.

The Quest for the Classic Cup--NYCTHA Playoffs 2007-2008
April 28, 2008
Nine players crashed, banged, and scored at Peggy O'Neill's on Saturday April 26th as the Clash for the Classic Cup ended NYCTHA Classic League Season two.

John Labianca traveled in from Las Vegas and took the First Division Trophy after finishing fourth in the Playoff Round Robin, playing the "Play-In" series, and then knocking out AJ Sarma, who had traveled in from Irvine CA.   Congratulations John "Coleco Labs" Labianca!

Playoff day at the NYCTHA began with five players playing a Playoff round robin on three custom coleco games to round out the Round of Eight who would play for the NYCTHA Classic Cup: Edward, AJ, John, Adam and Anthony.

Only four out of the five would make it to the round of 8, and it came down to the final match of the round robin;  John Labianca was 3-5 and had finished his games; Anthony was 2-5 but still had a match with a hot AJ Sarma who had just won three in a row; this was the final match of the Playoff Round Robin, and the fourth spot was still up for grabs . . . .

Anthony jumped out to a 4-1 lead; AJ stormed back but Anthony re-asserted his lead to 6-4.  AJ would not be stopped, as he scored three goals to win the match 7-6 in a tremendous comeback for his fourth win in a row!  Had Anthony held on, John would have had to play Anthony in a sudden death match, but it wasn't meant to be for Anthony . . . . "Coleco Labs" held on for the prized 8th spot in the Round of Eight.

Edward came to Playoffs with a chip on his shoulder . . . . after being the Classic League whipping boy for the regular season, he dominated the Playoff round robin, winning 6 of 8 games and averaging 3 GPG, the most he has ever scored per game.  Alas, he could not find any chicken to grease Roger Owens's rod tips, and Roger swept him in the round of 8.  Edworld bounced back to take third in the First Division defeating Adam 2 games to none --congratulations Ed!

AJ traveled all the way in from Irvine CA to support NYCTHA players.  Having competed in the Las Vegas Coleco Classic (a sanctioned NYCTHA league date due to five NYCTHA players participating), made him elgible for the Playoff Round Robin, but he would have to play hard to make it to the Round of 8 and play for the Cup.  Starting off 1-3, AJ won his last four games in a row, to take the second spot in the Round Robin.  AJ faced Greg in the Round of 8 going down 2-4 but battled his way back to the First Division Final before being eliminated by Coleco Labs, 4 games to 2.  Second place in the First Divsion is a heck of an achievement!  Congrats AJ!

Adam Zawislak had the passion at NYCTHA Playoffs.  I've never seen him play harder in all the times I've played him. Adam battled his way through the den of vipers that was the Playoff Round Robin to finish 4-4, good for third place.  In his Round of Eight series with JP, he was up 2 games to 1 before a heavy pasta lunch took the edge off of his game.  Our series was a tremendous dogfight and I had nothing left after it was over.  Adam battled bravely, with terrific intensity and focus.  It was great having Adam in the NYCTHA this season.  He is what the NYCTHA is all about: fun!

John "Coleco Labs" Labianca jetted in from his penthouse on top of the Palms Hotel and Casino in Vegas to Coney Island to play for the Classic Cup . . . . and that he did, sneaking into the Round of Eight as the 8th seed.  Classic Cup Champ Lou swept him, and then Labs had to play a play--in with Anthony to qualify for the First Division Playoffs.  Labs won that series 4-1, then took down the gaseous cloud that was Edward, 4 games to 2, then in the First Division Finals defeated AJ 4-2, to crawl out from the bottom to win the First Division Trophy!  Congrats John on an amazing performance!

Anthony Sciacca . . . . what more can be said about this guy?  Salt of the Earth.   Anthony Sciacca is the Winner of the NYCTHA Classic League 2007-2008 Most Gentlemanly Player Award
Anthony has exhibited all season long what it means to be a professional table hockey player, both on and off the boards.  Anthony is our best referee, one of our most enthusiastic players, and is a leader in his own right, organizing events like Yonkers Table Hockey Day.  Anthony, you are a gem and all of us at NYCTHA love you man!
Anthony had a rough rough day behind the rods at NYCTHA playoffs.  Finishing 2-6 in the Playoff Round Robin and dropping his first chance in two seasons to play for the Classic Cup must have hurt, but Anthony took it in stride and came out fighting in the First Divsion Play-In, defeating Labs 4-3 before losing the series 1-4.  Anthony stuck around anyway and refereed in brilliant fashion, calling Edward for a five-second violation even though it was a tie game!  Wow!
Congrats Anthony on your well-earned award.

NYCTHA Season Two came to a crashing crescendo as 8 rabid players collided 56 times over two round robins on Saturday March 29th at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island.

Greg Scoma, directly from his third place showing in Detroit, came in and went 11-3 to finish first overall.  Greg swept Lou Marinoff, split with JP and Roger, went 3-0 in OT and had two shutouts to win his second date in Season II.  Greg is now ranked #3 going into NYCTHA Playoffs on April 26th. Congrats Greg and good luck in the playoffs!

Lou Marinoff finished second place for the second consecutive league date despite going at it hammer--and--tong all day long.  All the other players were in awe of Lou's intensity on this day when he swept pesky league nemesis JP (3-2; 5-2), defeated Roger Owens once (4-3) and led the players in fewest goals against.  Lou had four shutouts and went 1-1-1 in OT.
LOU MARINOFF WON THE REGULAR SEASON TITLE FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE SEASON AND IS RANKED NUMBER ONE GOING INTO NYCTHA PLAYOFFS NEXT MONTH.  Congrats Lou and good luck!

Roger Owens had a great first round robin, going 5-1-1, but the corned beef and cabbage at lunch took its toll on him in the second round robin as he went 4-3 to finish the day at 9-4-1 for third place. His offense was clicking all day, he led all players with 59 goals scored on the day, but the NYCTHA has gotten stronger this season.  Roger is ranked #4 going into NYCTHA Playoffs next month, but that does not mean he is the fourth best player: nobody wants to face this veteran in a 7 games series:  Good luck Roger!

JP had a miserable day as the rest of the league put him in his proper place: fourth.  Going 7-5-2 after starting off 4-0, and winning only 3 of his last ten matches does not portend well going into NYCTHA playoffs.  JP was swept by Lou and suffered upset defeats to the Galatioto Clan.  JP is ranked #2 going into NYCTHA Playoffs on April 26th (a joke!)  I'd wish myself luck, but I need more than that . . . .

Bill Galatioto had a tumultous Date.  In the first round robin, he got obliterated by Lou 0-10, and had to settle for a tie with JP after giving up a goal with one second left.  But in the second round, Bill shut JP out, beat Roger 5-4, and then gets hammered by Nicholas Galatioto 2-8 to end his day at 6-7-1.  This player has the skill and will to be more consistent and thus more of a threat . . . remember, he won last season's playoff round robin.  He will have to finish in the top four again this year as he is ranked #5 headed into NYCTHA Playoffs next month.  Give 'em hell Bill!

Nicholas Galatioto is a tough player.  Like his Dad, he had a rough first round, going 1-6.  But the corn beef and cabbage at lunch was like Popeye's spinach as he opened the second round robin with a narrow 0-1 OT loss to Roger Owens, then clipped Greg 2-1, tied Lou 2-2, beat JP 2-1 and then crushed his Dad 8-2 going 4-2-1 in the second round robin and 5-8-1 on the day, good for sixth place.  Nicholas is ranked 8th for NYCTHA Playoffs and so will have to try and emerge from the Playoff Round Robin if he wants to play for the Classic Cup on April 26th.  God luck Nick!

Edward bounced back from his awful last place finish at Date V.  4-10 is no disgrace when you consider that debacle.  Ed lost two tough matches to Lou (0-1 and 3-4 OT) and one OT match to James (1-2), so if he could have scored 3 or 4 more goals he would have finished 7-7.  The defense and desire is there (finally!) and all he needs is some more offense if he is going to come out of the Playoff round robin next month.  Edward is ranked 6th overall going into the playoffs.  Good Job my brudda!

James Friedl is no longer the tie-king.  After leading the league in ties last year, James did not have a single one this season.  More importantly, his game has really improved both offensively and defensively.  OK, so he went 1-13 in Date VI--but that includes 3 losses in OT and three more regulation one-goal loses.  So almost half of his loses were by a single goal in Date VI. Just like the rest of the league, from top to bottom, James can take anyone out--ask Lou.  James is ranked 11th going into the playoff round robin on April 26th.  Good luck James!

Nicholas Galatioto (left, taking on James Friedl) is an up and coming player in the NYCTHA
Can he emerge from the Playoff Round Robin and finally get a shot to play for the Classic
Cup?  Its all up to him . . . . .

NEFARIOUS NINE STORM INTO CONEY !
February 25, 2008
Above, the Nefarious Nine plus one "nice": from left: Lou, Edward, Cecilia Friedl, Joe, James, Steve, Roger, Anthony, Adam; foreground with Carlo Custom Coleco (mesh nets) JP.  Get in the  Picture! Join us Saturday
March 29th for NYCTHA Classic League Date VI

An Ill wind blew into Coney Island on Saturday February 23rd when nine hungry table hockey players met up and rocked the foundations of Peggy O'Neill's as they hammered away 72 times through two round robins.  Smooth scheduling kept all the chaos on the boards, and after numerous upsets and even more OT games (9 out of 36 second round robin matches!), a new player took first overall, proving that age-old adage that every dog has his day . . . . .

After an inauspicious 1-1-1 start (including a 1-6 thrashing at the hands of the Brooklyn-Skullcrusher Roger Owens), JP went on a 12-1-1 tear including two victories over league nemesis Lou Marinoff and a heart-stopping 6-5 OT upset of the Skullcrusher in round robin two, along with a 3-0-1 OT record to finish 13-2-1 and top dog on date V.   Too bad he didn't purchase a lottery ticket on Saturday . . . . . .

Roger "Skullcrusher" Owens came back into the NYCTHA fold after a hiatus and nearly blew the doors off Peggy O'Neill's in the first round robin defeating both JP and Lou MarinoffRoger was sorely missed and it is super to have him back with us!  He finished a strong second at 12-3-1 with Five OT matches in the second round robin (2-2-1).

"Sweet" Lou Marinoff, who is  responsible for the exponential progress and growth of every single player in the NYCTHA, felt the ramifications of his contributions to the tune of losing a whopping (only three loses all of last season!) 4 losses and a tie while winning 11.  Lou still put the puck in the net 93 times, but the other NYCTHA players have improved so rapidly that if you are not at your best on any given match they will expose the holes they find.  Lou came out swinging at the start of the second round robin with 10-0 and 12-1 victories, but could not keep the momentum going on  the strongest day in league history: never before has there been such a high percentage of OT games or upsets.   Oh, he'll bounce back in Date VI . . . . .

In fourth place . . . . .
(steve dowell left--in mid flap--takes on Edward as Roger Owens refs)

Steve Dowell!  Back in December at NYCTHA Classic League Date III, Steve had to make the 200 mile drive back to New Bloomfield after not having won a single match all day.  But at NYCTHA Date V, he went 10-6, including wins over LouRoger and JPLou had defeated Steve 9-0 in Round Robin one, but Steve found a way during lunch and was on the rampage, scoring goals from everywhere in the second round robin.  Bravo Steve Dowell!  Thanks for coming out and showing us what you're made of! To make the top 4 after not winning a game two months before, well, that is awesome!

Adam Zawislak.  Where do I begin?  Adam finished 9-7 for fifth place, including a tough 6-7 loss in OT to Roger and another 2-3 loss to JP.  This guy showed us all that he can play with anyone in this league and he will be a mighty force to be reckoned with in the playoffs.  He took down CPTHL rival Steve Dowell twice (neither Lou, Roger or JP could say that!) and had two shutouts on the day when everyone was scoring goals from all over the place.  Thanks Adam!

NYCTHA Classic League was lucky to introduce another new player into the league when Joe Gurney from New Smyrna PA and the CPTHL came out and played Saturday.  Joltin' Joe finished with a 5-9-2 record--very good when you consider most new guys are lucky to win three games.  Joe tied JP in the first round robin and took the White-Hot Steve Dowell down twice.  Joe has great potential and is a good sport; he really added to the mix at Date V!

Anthony "Was That an in and out?" Sciacca had some tough luck on Saturday.  He finished 5-11, but lost two in OT and should have taken JP down in the second round but JP got a bounce for the 3-2 win.  One more goal in those three games and he's at 8-8 for his best day ever: but it wasn't meant to be.  Anthony had two shutouts and is on the rise.

James Friedl was back for Date V, one month after taking down Lou Marinoff to ruin his run at a perfect date in Date IV.  This time the rest of the NYCTHA was wise to his "Friedl Trap" and he got off to a rough start in games against Lou, Roger and JPJames found his game in the second round robin and had more success, but finished 3-13 on the day.  Hey, its all about slappin' some puck for JF, and he got plenty of it Saturday.  It was great seeing Cecilia also!  Muchas gracias Senorita!

Oh the pain . . . . . . . .   Edward had his worst day ever behind the rods--even  the re-appearance of Roger Owens AND chicken at lunch, could not help him as he went 1-14-1 at Date V.  What was once a winning recipe for Ed-World has lost its spice.  Never-mind.  Just like Lou will bounce back in Date VI, so too will Edward.  Thanks for coming Ed!

On a final note I just want to thank Bob, Sean and Emmanuel at Peggy O'Neill's for their outstanding hospitality, service and dedication to the NYCTHA.  On a really crappy winter day with snow all over the place and the wind and rain, these three gentlemen came in and took care of us.  Of all the venues we have had, never before have we been the recipients of such terrific service and generosity as we are at Peggy O'Neill'sNYCTHA Date V was the best date of the season; from the quality of the matches, to the smoothness of the organization, to the food and drink, and finally the camaraderie.  Everyone who was at Peggy O'Neill's on Saturday, all the players, the staff, you turned a gloomy winter day into paradise for a little while.  Thanks so much guys (and gal!) and I cannot wait to see you all again on Saturday March 29th for NYCTHA Date VI!

that's Sean on the left and Bob on the right: thanks guys for EVERYTHING!

Roger Owens (middle) and Greg Scoma (right) will battle for third place overall at NYCTHA
Classic League Date VI on Saturday March 29th: another in a long list of heated rivalries!

NUCLEAR NINE LEAVES CONEY ISLAND IN RUINS
(From left: Anthony Sciacca,Lou Marinoff, Nicholas Galatioto, Bill Galatioto, Adam Zawislak, James Friedl--he was hungry on this day folks--,Edward Power, Greg Scoma; kneeling at the rods: JP: Carleco game with mesh nets, no dead spot )

Peggy O'Neill's was the site for some of the most exciting and unexpected results at NYCTHA Classic League Date IV on Saturday January 19th.  Lou Marinoff played his best table hockey of the season thus far, but was unable to maintain a perfect record (he has yet to this season), defeating a game Greg Scoma in the biggest league rivalry, 5-4 in OT, but then falling to NYCTHA Most Gentlemanly Player James Friedl 2-3 late in the second round robin.  It was perhaps the biggest upset in NYCTHA history . . . more on that match later.

Despite another date marred by forfeits, most players competed in 16 matches.  JP was stung twice by Lou, once by Greg, and Bill Galatioto, coming off a shakey first round robin (3-5), took JP to OT and almost ended JP's undefeated OT streak.  JP finished second for the third time this season, and it seems like the gap between him and Lou is getting larger by the date.

Greg Scoma had a tough first round robin, falling to a hot James Friedl (2-3) and then taking Lou to OT with ten seconds left in regulation only to fall 40 seconds in 4-5OT.  He defeated a hungry JP 5-4 to cap off the first round robin, but had to forfeit some second round matches to catch a plane at Laguardia.  Greg finished third on the day at 10-6.

Bill Galatioto had a rusty first round robin, but after starting the second round robin getting belted by Lou (1-7), he stormed back winning five of the next six matches and tieing the other.   Bill brought his Sabres game and for me, this game was a joy to play on.  Thanks Bill.

Nicholas Galatioto also had a better second round robin going 5-3; some of his wins included a dramatic 6-5 win over Edward where he scored with one second left; a 5-0 shellacking of the hot James Friedl, and a pasting of his league rival Bill Galatioto, 5-0.  If only this young man had the time to practice, he would be among the top of the NYCTHA.  The talent is there.

James Friedl.  What can we say about this guy?????  OK, so the record is 6-10; the goal differential a bloated minus 27.  But on this day he took down last Date's number one and two players!  A first round upset of Greg (3-2) followed by a second round upset of Lou (3-2) highlighted a day where his overall game play was two levels above what is has been in the past.  Yes, he had to be warned about illegal defense, but he abided by the rules to ruin the grail of a perfect day by Lou Marinoff.  Bravo James.  You need to find some time to get some practice in my friend--just look at what a weekend of Benej did for your coleco game!

Anthony Sciacca is a humanitarian man;  On a day where he "didn't feel like" competing, he won four hard fought games.  Then when Greg needed a ride to Laguardia airport to catch a flight, Tony volunteered knowing full well that his remaining games on the schedule would be forefeited.  All the other players have seen this player's game grow in leaps and bounds.  He is slowly coming into his own as a player and will be a threat in the playoffs.  Thanks Tony for all you do for us!

Adam Zawislak re-appeared after missing league date III.  We missed him.  Adam was all over the place at Peggy O'Neill's, reffing games, pounding away, and occasionally winning a game or two.  James Friedl got a lucky shot in OT to take Adam down (James was hot today, folks), but Adam played much stronger than his record indicates.    This is a player who doesn't play neccesarily for results, but for recreation.  I have a feeling the playoffs will show another side to AZ.  Thanks for your support my friend.

Alas, two things were missing for Edward on this day: no chicken on the menu and no Roger Owens.  The result was a tough 4-12 finish where he lost one game with one second left (5-6 loss to Nicholas) and another game with 4 seconds left (0-1 loss to JP).  James Friedl added insult to injury with a 3-2 second round defeat;  Ed-World took it like a man though, and is gearing up for NYCTHA League Date V which is Saturday February 23rd, 11:30AM at Peggy O'Neill's.  Hope to see you there.

BEST WISHES GO OUT TO GUY MASON OF TORONTO WHO IS UNDERGOING CATARACT SURGERY AND STEVE DOWELL OF NEW BLOOMFIELD PA WHO HAD KNEE SURGERY.  GET WELL SOON YOU TWO!  THE NYCTHA MISSES YOU BOTH, GREATLY!

NYCTHA Classic League Date III: The Supersonic Seven
December 8, 2007
Lou Marinoff, right--with puck on right wing--takes on Anthony Sciacca at Peggy O'Neill's
in Coney Island at NYCTHA Classic League Date III. Lou took first place in the second
consecutive Classic League photo finish where the final match determined first overall.
To Lou's right is Edward Power and to Ed's right is Guy Mason. Thanks guys for your support!

Seven table hockey warriors converged at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island and slugged it out during
NYCTHA Classic League Date III on Saturday December 8th 2007.  Once again, for the third date
in a row, the final standings came down to the date's final match.  This has been our closest season yet.

Lou Marinoff defeated a weary JP in the day's final match to win first overall at 14-2.  Lou, who suffered
only three defeats all of last season, has been bloodied for three consecutive dates but still finds a way
to finish on top, defeating Greg Scoma and JP two of out three times each.  Greg Scoma beat JP in their
final match to take second place at 13-3 and JP gave up way too many goals on this date--his worst
defensive showing ever--to finish 12-4.  Just think if he did not win those four OT games on this day . . .
Congrats Lou--the NYCTHA is getting closer to taking you down, young man!  See you in January
for NYCTHA Date IV and for the Coleco Classic III in Las Vegas.

Greg Scoma drove in from Mt. Vernon VA and played great all day, defeating JP two out of three
and Lou once.  Greg brought his dog for good luck and to freak out Lou Marinoff--it didn't work.
Greg once again did the stats and provided his assistance in the scheduling.  Thanks Greg for your
efforts on our behalf.  Greg hopefully will be making it to Vegas in January.

Guy Mason traveled all the way in from Toronto to support us, and CPTHL 2007 Champ Steve Dowell
made the 220 mile trip from New Bloomfield to do the same.  Steve was very disappointed that his two
good friends Adam and Roger did not show up, but he played on anyway and was a tremendous sport.

Guy stayed on for the third round robin and played his four games in succession before bolting to meet up
with the missus in NYC.  He played hard and he played well and it was our pleasure to host him.  Hope you
can make it back for NYCTHA Playoffs on April 26th 2008. We played a great OT match my man!

Anthony Sciacca was again the first player to arrive and he played his best.  While the record will show
only three wins, Anthony lost a heartbreaker to JP in OT, took gamer Steve Dowell and proved that
he will be a force to be reckoned with in Date IV.  Hopefully Anthony will join us in Vegas for the Coleco
Classic III on Sunday January 27th (that's 8 days after NYCTHA Classic League Date IV.)

Steve Dowell once again supported the NYCTHA despite his 220 mile drive.  Steve was kinda sad that his
two ACTHL buddies, Adam and Roger Owens, could not make NYCTHA Date III.  But he played hard
and displayed the skill and sportsmanship that he is renowned for.  His record is not indicative of his talent
as the NYCTHA was very very competitive on this day, and the 5380 is not his game of choice, another
reason to salute this man's support and commitment to us at the NYCTHA.  Yeah, he has obligations, but
he takes the time to support us at the NYCTHA despite living in Central Pennsylvania.  With 7 players
attending two out of the last three NYCTHA Classic League dates, I wonder if NYC even wants a table
hockey league . . . . actions speak louder than words.  Gracias Esteban!

EdWorld Power showed for the second consecutive league date and even stayed on for the third round robin
(yeah!!!!)  Edward lost ten matches but played better this week despite the losses.  He "should" have taken
JP in their first and third matches, and tied Guy Mason in a thrilling match which left both players drained. No
chicken fat on the rods this week for Edward, although Peggy's did provide the players with a terrific meal that
included beef, pasta ,chicken, salad, vegetables, rolls and desert.  Thanks Bobby for your tremendous
hospitality!  The players enjoyed their meal and look forward to supporting Peggy O'Neill's despite the no-
shows and lack of local support.

I hope our players will support us next month--hey, its your league guys, so its all up to you--for NYCTHA
Classic League Date IV on Saturday January 19th at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island; we start at 11:30

Date IV will be the perfect tune-up for the Coleco Classic III on Sunday January 27th at the South Point
Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas: http://scthl.blogspot.com I was at this tournament last year and it was
tremendous.  Lou Marinoff fought the good fiight forcing a seventh game in the finals before falling to
Dave KraehlingAJ Sarma builds terrific games and runs a great tournament. The follwing day, Monday
January 28th is the Stiga Las Vegas tournament  www.stigalasvegas.com at the South Point, hosted
by table hockey organizer extraordinaire Jim Rzonca.  This tournament is famous for the quality of the games
and the first class venue and camaraderie.  Hope to see as many NYCTHA Classic League players take
advantage of the opportunity to play in two tournaments for the price of one plane fare . . . .

Classic League Collision in Coney Island for NYCTHA Date II
November 3, 2007

Fourteen warriors slugged it out in Coney Island at Peggy O'Neill's at NYCTHA Classic League
Date II on Saturday November 3rd.  It was a day of table hockey, competition and camaraderie.
Thanks guys for making it happen!
(from left: Standing: Anthony Sciacca, John Gaffney, James Friedl, Len Mecca, Bill Galatioto,
JP, Edward Power, Lou Marinoff, Nicholas Galatioto; Kneeling from left: John Labianca, Roger
Owens, Greg Scoma and Steve Dowell.  Adam Zawislak had to leave before photo was taken).

NYCTHA Classic League Date II was our biggest regular season date thus far with 14 players coming
out to support us and play some top-notch table hockey.  Players traveled from as far as Las Vegas (John
Labianca) and New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania (Steve Dowell). The level of play in this league has grown
enormously, and while there were upsets, Lou Marinoff continued his winning streak and took first place
overall once again for the second straight league dateLou blew the doors off a hot  JP who entered his
match with Lou undefeated, only to fall 1-11 in the battle for first overall on the day.  Congrats Lou !

Making their NYCTHA Classic League debuts were CPTHL Champ Steve Dowell from New Bloomfield, Chexx champ John Gaffney from Burlington, NJ, and John Labianca of Las Vegas.  Each player added talent and class to the NYCTHA Classic league and we are so fortunate to have their company and support.  Please come again, Gents

The intense Bill Galatioto continued his hot play (first overall in the NYCTHA Playoff round robin last
April) defeating his fellow Buffalonian Greg Scoma and finishing 5th overall on the dayRoger Owens
once again defeated Lou Marinoff  and finished the day with 11 wins for another impressive day at the
boards.  This player is on the cusp of a first place overall finish, and with a few bounces--especially against
league nemesis EdWorld Power (he is known to slick up the rod-tips with chicken grease prior to his
matches against Roger) --could very well unseat the Champ.  Greg Scoma was not expected to be at
NYCTHA date II but felt the urge to merge with his fellow players and traveled in on the red-eye flight
from Colorado to NY , rested up in his rental car across the street from the venue prior to surprising
us at Peggy O'Neill's on Saturday morning.  Greg did a great job on the stats and despite some wonky
scheduling due to no-shows and late arrivals, managed the day in his usual competent manner.  Thanks Greg
for going the extra mile for the NYCTHA!
NYCTHA prodigy Nicholas Galatioto continued his table hockey development playing outstanding
defense and displaying classy sportsmanship with a 2.69 goals against average and winning five matches;
Nick is the future of table hockey in the tri-state area and is a wonderful represenative of the sport
of table hockey.  Each of the players are impressed with his terrific attitude and really enjoy his
company.  Now all he needs to do is knock off his dad--I guess he is waiting for playoffs for this!
Keep up the great work Nick and Bill--we love to see you at the NYCTHA!

Each player played roughly 13 matches ( there were some forfeits unfortunately for the first time in league
history) but overall the day was feisty and fun.  Edward Power made his return to NYCTHA and even
won four in a row at one point, including an upset over NYCTHA powerhouse Roger Owens.  I am so
grateful for all the support I received from every single one of the players and of course our beautiful,
kind and just plain sweet hostess Melissa from Peggy O'Neill's: thanks for making our players feel welcome!

And of course the great Sal Capizzi for the terrific tournament website and his assistance.  Sal makes great websites and other table hockey stuff like logos and players; visit his site at Capizzi Web Designs at

Finally thanks to all of the players for making a dream/vision that Lou, Greg and I had about putting on a coleco tournament with the best players in the best city in the world, NY City, come true!
