New York City Table Hockey is . . . . BACK!

Yes it IS true, the NYCTHA has spruced up its moniker--we are New York City Table Hockey--and thanks to a new game, we are back in business.  The business of hosting tournaments and a league in Coney Island and Staten Island.

If you want to play, all you have to do is email me at colecojohnny@gmail.com

We will be playing on custom 42 inch long straight-slot games using both yellow stick (tournaments) and flat players for the New York City Table Hockey League.  Both tournaments and league dates are all FREE.  We will be playing at Steeplechase Beer Garden in Coney Island and Mother Pugs on Forest Avenue in Staten Island.

The same format will be back: Double round robin and playoffs with lunch in between.  Players need to email me after a league date is announced: November 11, 2017

I will email you back to confirm your attendance, you show up and have fun playing table hockey.  It is that simple.

We have a page on Facebook: New York City Table Hockey.  If you like us then you can see photos of the games we will be playing on as well as the players we will be using on the games.

I need you guys to email me as soon as you know you want to partake of the beautiful game!  This is CRUCIAL.  I need to approach our venue hosts with a number of players and then follow through on that number.  This enables us to have tournaments and league dates for FREE.

YOU ARE INVITED!  Email me colecojohnny@gmail.com and lets get behind the rods NEW YORK (and New Jersey/Connecticut/Pennsylvania/Canada/Mexico/etc)!!!!!!

Players from NY, NJ and PA Face Off at Mother Pugs for the Tri State Cup!

Whoa Nellie!  Talk about a table hockey tussle!  Old friends and players from leagues in NY and PA met up Saturday May 16th at Mother Pugs (1371 Forest Ave in Staten Island) for some table hockey, good times and the Tri State Cup.

The Table Hockey League of Hershey, the Central Pennsylvania Table Hockey League and the NY City Table Hockey Assoc. were all represented at Pugs as 12 players went eyeball to eyeball over some hot shit custom coleco.

After the beer was guzzled, the last pico launched, and the dust settled, The Legend Lou Marinoff, who stomped all over the "competition," walked off with the prestigious Tri State Cup (see photo below.)  Congrats Lou!

It was mighty nice of messrs Joe Gurney Adam Zawislak, Dave Miller, and "Wavey" Dave Foreman to make  the trip to Staten Island for some of the beautiful game.  The SoHo custom coleco games made quite the impression,  as is their wont, and it was a terrific afternoon of camaraderie and table hockey.  If you missed it, we meet again Saturday June 13th at Mother Pugs.  Email colecojohnny@yahoo.com if you want to play: tell him Classic League Puck Pundit Johnny Rod sent ya!

CLASSIC CUP PLAYOFFS APRIL 18 2015 IN CONEY ISLAND

The Classic Cup has not been won since April of 2013, and this coming April 18th, the NYCTHA 2014-2015 Classic League season will culminate in the winning of this prestigious table hockey award.  All players who have competed in one classic league date (see standings below) have earned the right to play for the Classic Cup.  All players are welcome to come on the 18th and compete in our round robin and knockout tournament, the winner of which will receive a Famous Nathan's Hot Dogs gift certificate.  If you would like to play, email colecojohnny@yahoo.com no later than Thursday April 16th and you are in!  And now, I'll turn it over to the Bob MacKenzie of table hockey, Johnny Rod, for his Classic Cup Musings and Diatribe.

"Holy Smokes! It's about time ya ham-hock!  I won't be muzzled no longer!  Now you are gonna sit down, zip it, and listen to this here update on the best Classic League season in NYCTHA history, and I don't want any hemmin' or hawin' about I got to put this down, and I got to keep this out, no way Jose, this here is my opinion and dag nabbit' I got to put it all out there!

Lets start off with these games.  Now the boys over at SoHo Table Hockey took the old-fashioned custom coleco s-slot game, you know the one with the s-slot defenseman slots, and turned it into a fast-paced but still precision-like contraption. How so?  Damned If I know!  Lemme see how I can explain this . . . well, just listen to this:  When you get on this here contraption, and you're playin' a guy who is level with ya or maybe a tad bit more ability, after ten seconds a' slappin' the puck around you turn plum-loco and it brings out the beast in ya.  What happens is well, you have an idea on how to score a goal, and cause this contraption is built for precision, you can go ahead and manifest that goal into the natural world.  I kid you not!  But the games look the part too, you got all these great woods they use cause they want to, I don't know!, maybe put the game on a pedestal (where it belongs far as I'm concerned!).  But now the players.  And I'm gonna go and start with my favorite player, "The Road Warrior", or LD.

Now this here feller jack-asses all the way from the outskirts a Philly' to Coney Island just to play in the Classic League!  Once in Coney Island, he fits right in and plays a style all-his-own. LD ain't no crybaby.  Why, one time he didn't win a single match and I heard him when fat-ass JP came up to him to "thank him for his support" (yeah right), he got all sentimental and said to LD, "sorry about your record" and LD got all up in JP's grille and said, "I'll be back next month.  I'm having too much fun to miss out!"  Now ain't that a kick in the pants?  The man travelin' hundreds a miles, has the toughest day a guy can have behind the rods, and he's all excited about travelin back the following month?  LD, you are a man after my own style!

Now I know what ya'lll are gonna cackle . . . 'well, he's just sendin this guy all these hearts and flowers cause he wants to stay on the right side of him . . . a guy with Johnny's mouth gotta build a wall around hisself after all.'  Nonsense!  Just cause the Vinner is twice the size of me, doesn't mean I can't tell the folks he has two times the heart I got!  Now this Hungry Vinner, he didn't just come into the Classic League and start kickin' butt all over the place--attended all 5 league dates, won 46 out of 71 matches, finished in the top four every league date, including losing in the finals two or three times.  What should impress you fools is that he did it all as a Classic League Rookie! No Classic League rookie has had the prolonged impact, both on and off the games, as Vinner has.  Not one.  The mere presence of this here player has not only classed-up the league in quality, but class as well.  And let me tell you, and you heard it here first folks: The Hungry Vinner is going places.  He will win a major tournament before he is through.  So put that in yer pipe and smoke it!

Gosh-darn it!  I would be a most remiss if I did not acknowledge what this player has done for all them Classic League players.  John F.  or "JohnNY Lightning" or "Pico Nation", call him what you will, had the will, vision and resources to defenestrate the old games and bring the sport of table hockey up into the professional ranks for certain.  His SoHo games are professional quality both in performance and look.  If they can raise up JP's game to the level they did (f-in guy won 1st place in the regular season!) then they sure-as-heck have some sorta magic in them!  Besides that, John F. won 42 outta 56 matches, all with a bum-wing.  Playin' hurt he still won one League Date and was in the top four for all the others he played in.  Why over at that Mother Pugs, I personally witnessed him ending The Legend's 15 game winning streak!  He is a threat for the Classic Cup, and lord have mercy whoever plays him in the finals!

What can you say but thanks to a guy who has been in the Classic League since day one back in 2006, and hasn't squawked a single time?  James has been the loyal soldier and supporter and had one of his best days in many a moon with 5 wins just a couple of dates ago. Win or lose James loves slappin that puck around and talking Islanders' hockey with the guys.  No player has been more loyal than James.  He has set the standard the Classic League and all the players appreciate it.  Especially that JP!

Bob, Bob, Bob.  Now the 1st time this here player showed up in Coney Island, he come a- runnin from his parked car right into the Peggy O'Neill's just cause he didn't want to be late!  Nobody loves the game of custom coleco like this here feller.  Always quick with a story, he competes in the classiest of ways and while he wants to win, he never takes hisself seriously and always is lookin' out for his fellow player.  Bob-OH loves to mix it up with the best of them, but for cryin' out loud has not had the success he feels like he is capable of.  This boy is a gamer!

Now this here feller, the steadiest of players in the Classic League this season, has actually gotten better but has fallen further down the standings.  Anthony finished in 2nd the last time there was a Classic League season (2013) but this time finished 4th.  There is no more steady and consistent player.  Why, just look at the GF and GA!  From date to date this player goes from one nailbiter to another!  Always the 1st to help break everything down at the end of the date, and to ref a match that nobody else will, Anthony (a steady soldier himself who has been in the league since 2006) gives his all both on and off the games.  Thanks Anthony!

The last time there was a season in Coney Island, this here player made every league date and played in the finals, despite making the trek from down near Atlantic City.  This season, Len has made only two dates, but man have those been whoppers!  The Meccanisim won 20 of 31 matches in a league whose quality has increased at least 25%.  Len put out the Hungry Vinner at Mother Pugs and if he does show at the Classic Cup playoffs, will do some damage to antoher players' classic cup hopes.  There is no more crafty or clever player. Len's been in the Classic League since 2006 and was one of the founding members along with James and Lou.

Look out for The Cleaver!  He'll cut ya folks!  Moussa comes down from Connecticut to hack away with his pico-heavy offense and fierce competitive style.  This boy just wants to WIN!  Anthony Sciacca brought The Cleaver into the Classic League and the dates he has played have been stronger as a result of him showin' up behind the rods.

Matt "Mosh Pit" Meizner was there for us when we needed him most.  This punk-rock player helped out the Classic League by hooking us up with Mother Pugs when Coney Island booked someone else.  In his first Classic League appearance since the 2013 Classic Cup playoffs, Matt took the Legend to three games in the playoffs and won a respectable 7 matches.  Matt's presence ratchets up the intensity and fun at the Classic league and we sure do hope he can make the Classic Cup playoffs this season.  Thanks Man!

What can ya say about The Legend?  The man shows up at the Classic League and does what he does best: Win.  Walks in and wins 15 matches in a row, loses one, then goes on to win the playoffs of  the final league date of the 2014-2015 season.  Lou has won three Classic Cups and is poised, it would seem, to win another.  Thanks for your support Lou!

Bob Duenksi took the time to visit us back in January and all the folks thought he fit right in.  He defeated the loud-mouth JP, and added a bunch of great witticisms like "Cheesey Fayolle Banker" and "Cheesey chip shot" to the Classic league parlance: for this we are most grateful and welcome "Bashin" Bob to the Classic League playoffs.  (methinks he would rather be golfin'.)

So there ya have it!  Straight talk from a guy who's been there for every single goal and save this season!  And its about time somebody bought me a beer for cryin' out loud!  See ya at the Classic Cup April 18th!

Table Hockey Blitzkrieg Rocks Out Mother Pugs!

Twelve gods of the rods converged on Mother Pugs in Staten Island Saturday March 21st and proceeded  to rock out the punk-rock dive bar to the tune of 96 matches, 640 goals and 6.67 goals per match.  The SoHo custom coleco games were smokin' as pucks were slapped all over the joint.

"Mosh Pit" Matt Meizner hosted the NYCTHA and we thank him for his helpin' us out on our biggest league date of the season. Photos in PHOTO ALBUM under 2015 Classic League Date V (all photos by John F.)

Classic League 2015 Date IV Was A Ripsnorter!

March 2, 2015

Boy Howdy!  Classic League 2015 Date IV was a ripsnortin' affair.  Seven players battled over 42 matches in the round robin and 16 in the playoffs.  9 OT matches and a huge 6.59 GPG show that this league is all about the fun!

Rookie phenom The Vinner banged and crashed his way to the finals again, only to come up short with one second left in game one, then losing another dogfight 4-5.  He is down to one league date left to reach his admirable goal of winning a prestigious NYC Classic League Date.  Can he do it?  Join us March 21st to find out.

Road Warrior LD once again saved his best for last, winning only once in the round robin, and then winning two of of three to eliminate NYCTHA Veteran James, and taking Classic League Powerhouse John F. to the mat in a pair of thrilling one-goal playoff matches.  This was by far the loudest series of the day, with a packed house cheering on LD.

Steady Anthony came back from down 0-1 to win game 2 in OT and eliminate his protégé Moussa "The Cleaver."  John F. shook off his series vs. The Hungry Vinner and eliminated Anthony for third place.

"The Cleaver" came in from Connecticut and hacked his way to a respectable 9 points in 12 matches and used his pico heavy offense to stay in those matches he did not win, while "Tie King" James was in every match with his world-renowned intensity and gentlemanly play.  "Hey, put on the Islander game!"

Folks, you are really missing out on a gem of league; we have a great bunch of guys, terrific games (I would argue the best being made today), a friendly venue and its all going on in Coney Island.   We have one league date left, Saturday March 21st.  YOU are invited.  All you have to do is email colecojohnny@yahoo.com and you are in.  See you March 21st!

Table Hockey Vortex Freezes Coney Island!

A table hockey storm erupted at Peggy O'Neill's in Coney Island January 10th.  Six players belted out 45 matches over a triple round robin (averaging 5.73 GPM). Red hot NYCTHA rookie (3rd league date ever) The Vinner blew through round robin, winning 13 of 15, racking up 80 goals and allowing a measly 26.   Bob Duenski made his long-awaited debut, defeating JP in what felt like a grudge match (scoring 6 of his 20 goals against JP for some reason), and NYCTHA mainstay The Meccanisim, FINALLY showed up at Coney Island and exposed his wiles for all to ponder.  Road Warrior LD picked up his game to the tune of winning a playoff series and taking The Vinner to three matches in round two, while NYCTHA founding member James had his best day in awhile, starting the new year off with 5 wins.  JP appreciates all your support.   C'mon back for the Coney Island Mug tournament Saturday January 31st!

Classic League Date II Blew The Doors Off Peggy O'Neill's!

December 21, 2014

Larry and Anthony in round robin action on a SoHo Table Hockey game at Coney Island

Seven players battled for 42 round robin matches and 16 playoff matches.  GFPG in the round robin were 5.97 per match.  John F and JP had identical 11-1 records but John F got the tiebreaker (fewer GA).  New player Larry drove up from Cherry Hill NJ (the site of a once notorious multi table league that is now defunct) and played much better than his record indicates.  He is coming back January 10.

But the big story was the upset in the semi-final when JP got mowed down in game three by The Vinner, and tumbled down to 3rd place. John F beat-down The  Hungry Vinner in the Finals to win his 1st league date in over a season just as he is about to embark on hiatus.  Take Care John F!

It was great to see (NYCTHA Original Member) James back in Coney Island--come back in January James!

Get in the picture!  There are only 3 League Dates left this season, if you want to play, it is very easy, just email me.  It is all about the fun here, so don't hesitate. It is really simple: table hockey is fun.  The guys are great.  The venue is nice and easy to get to.  What exactly are you waiting for?

2014-2015 CLASSIC LEAGUE OPENER A ROARING SUCCESS.

October 8, 2014

Two years to the day of our last NY City Table Hockey Classic League Opener, the Boys were Back in Town Saturday October 4th to open the book on the 2014-2015 season and after banging out 56 matches over twenty rounds and playoffs, on brand new premier-level soho table hockey custom coleco games, its safe to assume that this will be our best season yet!

 more photos in PHOTO ALBUM

Five players, including our latest addition, NYCTHA Rookie "The Vinner," each got 16 matches in plus playoffs and lunch.  Goal scoring was the highest in several seasons, a whopping 6 goals per game, and a measly four shutouts in 56 matches (31 one-goal matches).  NYC Table Hockey Classic League Opening day was dedicated to the late Bob Ingo of Chicago, Illinois who passed away March 16, 2014.  Bob was a Coleco US Open and WTHA Hegewisch Cup Champion besides being a champion of a man.  He will be truly missed and fondly thought of wherever and whenever people have fun playing table hockey.  God Bless You Bob!

John F wins Cattania Cup!!!

It was a great day of table hockey, food, and camaraderie, but really, Lola stole the show . . . John F. wins the inaugural Cattania Cup.  He was hot on this day, and JP did not defeat him all day (couldn't stop the high pass!)  The Vinner rolled out the red carpet for his fellow players with great eats, drink and first class hospitality.  Thanks Vinnie for a great day--you are a most welcome addition to the NYCTHA in particular and table hockey in general.

The Vinner will not miss our next league date on Saturday December 13th in Coney Island at Peggy O'Neill's.  Will YOU??  I hope not.  To join us all you have to do is email colecojohnny@yahoo.com no later than the Friday before the league date and you are in!

DECEMBER 13th.  10:30AM.  It is going to be big, folks.  Players from Central PA, Philadelphia, and otherwise unknown environs (the above undisclosed location, perhaps?) are making the jaunt because they are aware of the great time in store for them.  And you too!

You are invited.  Email colecojohnny@yahoo.com if you want to play.

Table Hockey is other people.  Do you realize that  when you show up at a league or tournament  by doing so you are providing a fellow player an opportunity to play the sport he loves?  Its true!  NY City Table Hockey exists for the players in NY and across the country  to come and meet up with others who just  want to play table hockey.  And we always have fun doing it.

click on this link for a brief history of the s-slot by AJ Sarma http://www.scthl.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Here are some of our friends who have supported us in the past and continue to do so (although I'd love to see them in November and December).  If you cannot make it to Coney Island (really?  c'mon Man!) then support your local table hockey organization--or better yet-- step up and organize a league or tournament yourself!  The most credibility anyone can create for themselves is by organizing a league or a tournament in the town they live in.  Everything else is just talk--and we all know what talk is worth!

The Custom Coleco 5380: Classic Hockey At 500 MPH

"The custom coleco 5380 has soul!"

Vancouver Table Hockey Champ Dominic Froome

SuperDave celebrates a clutch goal!

SuperDave celebrates a clutch goal at Bridgewater Tournament July 2011

Back in August 2005 I was invited to a "bring your own game" event in Marysville PA.  It was an eye-opening event (the guys weren't much to look at but the variety of classic table hockey games was).

One game in particular caught my eye.  It was a coleco 5385, circa 1982.  The defense slots were shaped like an S, the game was only 19-1/2 inches wide, and taking the puck out from behind the net was an adventure.  But the game was fast, faster than any other game I had played on to that date.  The game I grew up on was the original benej game, then stiga . . . but this was something else.  Spring driven, flat players, and tight "checking," the 5385 was a game that drew the emotions out of all who played on her.  On my 3 hour drive home, I made plans to get my hands on one as soon as possible.  Luckily, my table hockey Mentor, Adam Z., told me to get in touch with table hockey impressario Len Mecca, who guided me to the man most responsible for bringing the coleco 5385 back to life, Martin Labelle.  Martin, you see, was making state of the art coleco games for a tournament circuit up in Quebec.  He sold me a game two days later and in a week I was on my back deck going toe to toe with my brother.  This game simply scorched!

a photo of the coleco 5385 game.

You see, there aren't many places to hide on the s-slot pattern.  With a level game and glass and new rods and a weighted down irwin puck, you can be fast and precise and allow the game to sing.  Each game has its own song, and before long I bought a second game from Martin, had a tournament, and started up a league in September 2006. Along with Greg Scoma and Anthony Sciacca, we had a terrific "Classic" league using these games, and games we bought from Carlo and Gino Bossio who picked up the torch from Martin Labelle and now build the custom coleco games. ( www.canadahockeytable.com )

After a break and a successful Vintage League, we have decided to get back to the custom coleco Classic League and invite you to come out and see for yourself why this particular game, revered in Quebec, is such a special one; how it can transform even the most meek and quiet person into a raging puckster in less than five minutes.  Its exciting, its back, and you know what?  Its about time!  Come out and see for yourself how this game has "soul."  We are playing Saturday November 3rd.  Email me if you would like to play.
