Phillies Defeat A's
Andy Mein usually keeps the Phillies hitters at bay, and Jonesy's great defense usually defuses any rallies the Phillies can put together. However, this night belonged to the Phillies. Willis threw 8 innings fanning 11, even with the A's good speed on the base-paths they could only put up 1 run. The Phillies came out swinging and took advantage of some errors and were aggressive on the bases. The Phillies defense was stellar, with 3 double plays extinguishing any threats. Phillies win 9-3.
Ivey tosses another gem in 3-hit shut out of Indians
Orville Ivey was dominate once again in his second start of the season, this time tossing a complete game three hit shut out at the Indians in what may have been the fastest 9 inning game in league history at 2 hours and 15 minutes. In addition to the 3 hits, the Indians would work two walks and have two runners reach base on errors, but managed only one baserunner to reach as far as 2nd base in the game as Ivey would mix in 10 strikeouts.
Richie Thompson lead off the game with a walk and after a strike out was thrown out trying to steal 2nd, but with two out the Marlins would rattle off three consecutive singles off Indians starter Scotty Constance by Mike Hammer, Phil Richards, and Ivey for the 1st run of the game, which would prove to be the only run needed for Ivey and the Marlins.
The Marlins would blow the game open with five runs in the 3rd which started with three straight singles by Paul da Silva, Richie Thompson and Rich Fletcher for one run, a one out walk to Phil Richards would load the bases, then a two out single by Rob Thompson plated two runs followed by a two-run double by Steve Lane.
Next week the 3-1 Marlins will take on the 2-2 Cardinals while the 2-2 Indians will meet the 4-0 Phillies.
Cardinals Defeat Rockies
The Cardinals made it two in a row with a win over the Rockies. A solid pitching effort with ANTHONY DORAN (W) and BILL LASHLEY combining for the win. Some timely hitting by the Cardinals who were able to take advantage of some defensive miscues. On the Rockies side, some stellar defensive plays were made by STEVE JONES (7) and JOHN CHRISTIE (44).
