Mullins Holds Colchester to 1 Run Through 4 Innings, But Jackets Fall to Lakers, 5-0
Lack of offense works against strong pitching by Pat Mullins and Ryan Nichols. After a wobbly 1st inning by Mullins in which he gave up a leadoff triple, then 4 straight singles after a long fly out to right, Mullins found himself with only a 1-0 defecit. He then went to work, retiring the Laker batters in order in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Taking the same score into the 5th, he quickly found himself in trouble giving up a leadoff single, followed by two walks, then two more singles (and yielding 4 runs). Coach Learned brought in Ryan Nichols who quickly induced a double play, followed by a ground out to third to end the inning. Nichols then pitched his own 1-2-3 inning in what turned out to be the final at-bat for the Lakers in the 6th. The Jacket bats were once again silent with the only hit being a double by Caleb Harris in the 2nd inning.

Giard Pitches 5 Hit Gem Against 11-1 CVU Squad, But Jackets Lose 4-1
Travis Giard kept the CVU sluggers off-balance all day and kept his team within striking distance thoughout the game Saturday. Of the 5 hits surrendered, only one was for extra bases: a one out, 2 RBI double in the top of the 4th. Milton bats were alive, but several balls that were stung were right at CVU outfielders. Only 4 hits were recorded. Contributing to the offense was Jon Covey with an RBI single in the 3rd that followed back-to-back line shots by Jackson Hickey and Ryan Nichols, and a Caleb Harris hit that bounced and exploded over the third baseman's head in the bottom of the 7th. The Jackets defense was flawless on the day with zero miscues.

Jackets at MVU: Team Wakes Up in 5th Inning to 7-0 Defecit, Battle Back But Ultimately Fall 7-5
"Senior Day": Caleb Harris leads offense: single, double, triple and 3 RBIs. Mike McClellan goes 2 for 4 and contributes 2 RBI's of his own. And although Ryan Beaulieu went 1-4, he reached base in all of his at-bats, hitting the ball so hard and then hustling down the line, that he reached on infield errors 3 times.
Junior Travis Giard pitches 2 innings of scoreless/hitless relief to give the team a chance to get back into the contest. Sets down MVU batters in order in each of the two innings he pitched.
Trailing 7-0, Milton scored 2 runs in the 6th and 3 in the 7th, and ultimately left the bases loaded to end the game.

'Jackets Outlast Seahorses in Extra Innings Thriller: Win 8-3
Jon Covey gets the win with 2 innings of gutsy relief pitching. His spectacular diving catch in right center field in 3rd inning responsible for igniting his teammates. Caleb Harris contributes game saving play deep in hole at shortstop in the bottom of 8th with 2 out and winning run at third. Harris follows this up by driving in the eventual game winning run with a bases loaded single in the top of the 9th. Further, he pitched a scoreless 7th inning. Matt Potter was the starter and left the game with one out in the 5th and a 3-2 lead. Ryan Nichols went on in relief and allowed 1 unearned run in 1 2/3 innings. Harris and Covey completed the magic as mentioned. The team played with maturity, determination and poise throughout the game.

'Jackets Top North Country with a Walk Off RBI Single by a Determined Jeff Cook
The Jackets rode the combined arms of Pat Mullins and Matt Potter as well as the bats of the entire team to a walk off 7-6 victory over North Country Union High School on Thursday. After Pat Mullins set down the first three batters he faced, The Jackets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st when with 2 outs, Mike McClellan doubled and then scored when Ryan Beaulieu reached on an error. The Falcons tied the score in the top of the 2nd on a solo home run, but left runners stranded on 2nd and 3rd to end the inning. Milton went quietly in the bottom half as did North Country did in the top of the 3rd when Mullins again set them down 1-2-3. In the bottom of the 3rd, Jon Covey walked on 4 pitches, but was forced out at 2nd when Ryan Nichols reached on a fielder's choice. After McClellan popped out to the first baseman, Beaulieu roped a double, advancing Nichols to third. Travis Giard pulled a ball between first and second into right field to score both runners and putting Milton up 3-1. Jeff Cook singled and was followed by a Jonah Blatt RBI single. Pat Mullins grounded to the shortstop to end the inning. In the 4th, North Country had one single, the only thing preventing Mullins from striking out the side. He was cruising. In the Milton 4th, singles by Covey and McClellan, and a 2 RBI double by Beaulieu put the Jackets up 6-1. In the top of the 5th, Mullins suddenly became mortal-issuing a leadoff walk, followed by a single. The next batter flew out to Colby Darling in left. But a double and a single scored two and that was the night for Mullins who left with runners at 1st and 3rd. Although both those runs eventually scored, Mullins was still in line for the win at best, a no-dedcision at worst. He was relieved by Matt Potter, who gave up a single to the first batter he faced, but settled in and retired the next two batters to end the threat. Milton still up 6-5. In the bottom of the next two innings, Milton was retired in order, as was North Country in the top of the sixth. The game entered the final frame 6-5 Milton. The first batter grounded back to Potter and was thrown out. The next batter, North Country's star, the catcher Nate Stewart, drove a 0-1 fastball over the fence in left and the game was all tied up. Potter retired the next two batters and it was time for the Jackets to respond. At the huddle, you could sense the determination. Home field advantage, last bats, was the talk. And the meat of the order, the group that had inflicted so much damage already was the weapon poised to go. McClellan led off with a sharp single. Beaulieu, the hammer of the day, popped out to second. But in short order, McClellan stole second and really began to apply the pressure. North Country opted to intentionally walk Giard and take a chance on Jeff Cook grounding into a double play. At first, Giard expressed his frustration to Coach Agan, being denied the opportunity to win it with a walk-off, he felt that good. Coach told him it was OK, he knew Cookie had a chip on his shoulder and was going to find a way to win it-he could feel it. On the first pitch, he drilled a low screamer into center field, scoring McClellan with the winning run. The Jackets won that one by playing the way they need to to win. Smart pitching, aggressive, steady defense and a relentless offense going to all fields, as well as playing throughout the game with grit and determination and having multiple players relishing the opportunity to be "the guy". Beaulieu: 3 RBI, 2 doubles McClellan: single, double, stolen base, 3 runs scored Giard: 2 RBI single Blatt: RBI single Cook: single, AND THE GAME WINNING RBI SINGLE Mullins: 4.1 innings pitched, 7K, 2BB Potter: 2.2 innings pitched, 2K,

Ryan Nichols Promoted to Varsity
Sophomore pitcher/infielder Ryan Nichols has worked for and earned a spot on the varsity roster for the remainder of the year. Nichols had some spot starts during his freshman year, but really worked throughout the summer and fall to improve his entire game. He broke spring training with the idea that he would be utilized by the varsity squad at times throughout the season. To date, he has appeared in 3 of the 5 games played. He is hitting above the team batting average, and has the lowest ERA with the 2nd most innings pitched. Due to the recently opened roster spots, a move needed to be made from the JV ranks. In need of pitching especially, Nichols was the obvious choice. Welcome aboard, Ryan.

Harris Theft of Home, Stellar Defense and Gutsy Pitching Comes Up Short vs. MMU
In their second meeting in three games, MMU's ability to score runs with two outs proved the difference. The game was very close through 5 innings with MMU leading only 4-3. Milton Pitcher Pat Mullins, combined with some spectacular defense kept the game within reach throughout. And although not in the Burlington Free Press story submitted by MMU, Caleb Harris' "Make-it-happen" baserunning and outright theft of home not only provided a spark to the Jackets offense, it effectively put MMU off their game for a couple innings and forced them to their bullpen. The defensive gems began with a hard-charging, diving catch by left fielder Jonah Blatt in the 3rd. Blatt broke in hard on the ball off the bat and in reaction to the topspinning ball's sudden drop, dove and with outstretched glove, snagged the ball JUST before it landed. This was a prime example in the turnaround in the effort and play of the entire outfield corps. Until the game at Spaulding, the outfielders seemed content to take the "safer" approach on tough plays-opting to let the ball land and gather it on the bounce rather than risking the big play. Mike McClellan's move to center field from behind the plate due to his injury seems to have been the turning point. McClellan brought his hard-nosed hustle style of play to the group and since the switch the entire group has improved enormously. Blatt's replacement later in the game, Jackson Hickey came up with his second big play in as many games-a rangy play in the 5th in which he took an aggressive line to the ball rather than the conservative route. Had he misplayed the ball the runner would have extra bases, but FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD. The other huge defensive play occurred in the 5th right after Hickey's fine catch. MMU star Cody Sharrow drilled a one-hop drive to the hole between 3rd and shortstop. Third baseman Ryan Beaulieu had just enough time for a quick jab step to his left before lunging for the ball. He was able to knock it down, and grabbing the ball and rolling to a sitting position, gunned down a speedy Sharrow at first FROM A SITTING POSITION! Any baseball fan, no matter who they're cheering for HAS TO appreciate a play like that. In fact when Beauli got to his feet, he was congratulated and greeted with a handshake by MMU head coach Brian Chandler. As for offensive highlights, the day was marked for Milton by perhaps the rarest and most exciting of plays-the outright steal of home. Shortstop Caleb Harris came into the game frustrated with his batting in the first week of the season and was determined to turn it around. The fourth inning started with Milton down 4-0 with a walk to McClellan followed by him stealing second during Beaulieu's at bat. Beauli drove him in with a double. Next, Harris stepped in, took a ball, then drove the next pitch through for a sharp single and the Jackets had runners at first and third with no outs. With Jeff Cook batting, Harris took off for second, drawing a throw which scored Beauli on a busted play. While the frustrated Cougars milled about, Harris noted Sharrow at third with his head down walking away from the bag. With no attention on him, he bolted toward and made third on a very heads-up play. With a clearly rattled MMU pitcher going from the windup, Harris timed the first delivery and determined he could swipe home. At the same time, Coach Learned was signalling for the Suicide Squeeze. Harris got a tremendous jump and even though Cook was unable to get a bat on the low and away pitch, Harris slid across the plate well before the tag. The score was now 4-3 and still no outs. Cook eventually followed with a single. Jonah Blatt battled but ultimately struck out. Jesse Agan singled to center, advancing Cook to third. However the rally ended when Mullins grounded into a double play. Unfortunately, this proved to be the high tide of the Milton offense on the day. Only one hit was recorded after the 4th, a one out double by Agan who was the only Jacket with multiple hits on the day. The final offensive highlight occured on the last out of the game, when Jon Covey went DEEP to left center. As this field has no fence, the Cougars were wisely playing deep and still the left fielder had to go all out to catch up with the ball. Had we been playing at home, the hit had every chance of going out for a 2 run dinger. Mullins was fantastic on the mound, the first Jackets pitcher to go deep in a game and saving arms for the coming week. To record all but the last out against the #1 team in VT after week 1 is impressive. Pat averaged 12 pitches per inning and kept us in position to steal a "W" all day. The ability to consistently score runs with two outs is what seperates top teams from the rest of the pack-it shows focus, determination and intensity. MMU was able to do that in three of the six innings they batted. In all three of those innings, the first two batters were quickly retired. Of the 8 MMU runs scored, 7 of them were with two outs. Had the Jackets been able to bear down and finish out any of those innings, the score and outcome would likely have been very different. Next up: St Johnsbury on Tuesday. Let's keep playing our game on defense, step up the offense and treat them to a long, quiet ride home. Let's go get it.

Jackets Overcome Early 3 Run Deficit to Defeat Spaulding 9-5
Spaulding got an early jump on the Jackets Thursday, smacking 4 doubles in the first two innings to score 3 runs. In the third, the Milton bats and starting pitcher Travis Giard simultaneously found the groove. In the top of the inning, Milton exploded for 5 runs, with the first 5 batters reaching and scoring. In the bottom of the inning, the first batter reached on a walk, but was quickly picked off by Giard. The next batter flew out to Jon Covey in right, and the final batter popped out to Matt Potter at second. In the 4th the Jackets plated 2 more runs which ultimately secured the win for Giard who was moved to 2B in the bottom of the inning with sophomore call up Ryan Nichols taking over the mound. Nichols needed only 44 pitches over the remaining 4 inning to secure the game. The offense was led by third baseman Ryan Beaulieu, who went 3 for 4 with a double and two singles, scoring and driving in a run. Giard and Covey each scored a pair. Caleb Harris drove in 2 runs and Jeff Cook, Jonah Blatt, and freshman call up Jesse Agan drove in a run apiece. Defensive highlights begin with Jackson Hickey's over-the-shoulder basket catch on the run and reminiscent of the famous Willie Mays catch. Caleb Harris had a big-time play at shortstop, going deep in the hole to his backhand, setting and gunning the runner in a close play at first. Colby Darling contributed a huge throw to secure the final out when the long relay to home caught the runner who had made the hit trying to advance to second when he thought the relay was going to the plate. Agan was called up to fill in for Mike McClellan who is nursing an injured finger, played in his first Varsity contest, called a great game behind the plate. He allowed no passed balls, caught a towering popup in a tricky spot between home and the mound, and only 3 runners "stole" bases, all these on balls in the dirt on which he block and had no play. He also secured his first varsity hit and RBI. The team played every aspect of the game very well, with the only negative being 2 missed suicide squeeze signs: one leaving the runner hung out to dry, the other with the runner escaping injury with a line drive narrowly missing him. Overall, lots of positives to move forward with!

Jackets Drop Home Opener to MMU 12-1
Despite the lop-sided score, Milton was in this game for the first 4 innings, down only 4-1 against MMU's star Cody Sharrow. If not for a few mis-played balls, the score would have been a much tighter 2-1. Matt Potter takes the loss, going 3 2/3 solid innings before giving way to Ryan Nichols who came in with two out and two on and struck out the last batter with three pitches. MMU started to find some grass in the top of the 5th with a leadoff double, followed by three straight singles, a walk, 2 more singles and a hit batter before Nichols regained the groove inducing a ground out to second, followed by back-to-back strikeouts. Pat Mullins pitched the final two innings giving up a run in each, one earned. Mike McClellan was the only Milton batter with multiple hits (2 singles). Travis Giard, Jonah Blatt, Caleb Harris, Jon Covey and Mullins each tallied a base hit. Blatt deserves special credit for going all seven innings behind the plate on extremely short notice after regular starting catcher McClellan suffered a hand injury only the day before. Pressed into service, Blatt did a notable job and got beat up by some vicious foul tips (and then being struck by a pitch on his other hand shortly thereafter). Another fine play was made in deep right center by a ranging Jon Covey with a catch at full sprint to the gap, preventing a likely triple. While we competed, we were the equal of our opponent. Next up: Spaulding. Let's go get it.
