Bishop Kmiec Boys JV Basketball League Available Gym Dates Form

Purpose of the Available Gym Dates Form
The Bishop Kmiec JV Basketball League exists to facilitate catholic and christian elementary schools in the Western New York area in offering athletic instruction, development, and competition to their students in the sport of basketball. The league's contribution to this goal is the faciliation of a schedule of games between the participating schools. The Bishop Kmiec league owns no facilities, and does not lease or rent gym time from any organization. An expectation of the league is that participating schools with a working gymnasium will provide sufficient gym time to the league to support a schedule of twelve regular season games per team. Simply said, without adequate gym time, there is no league.

What Constitutes Adequate Gym Time?
The League considers the ideal allocation of gym time to be a three game time slot (figure one hour per game) between either 5:30pm and 8:30pm, or 6pm and 9pm, on any weeknight Monday through Friday. The math would suggest that every team (schools with multiple teams need to apply the rules of multiplication) would need to provide two ideal gym time slots in order to cover the league requirements, if...(and this is important)... there were an even number of teams in the league, all teams had access to a workable gym facility, all time slots were three-game slots, there was no overlapping availability between the schools, and all teams were available to play on all dates. Past experience has proven that we fall well short of the ideal scenario.

In order to complete a 12 game league schedule, while acknowledging some of our less-than-ideal constraints, we request that each school with a workable gymnasium provide 4 dates per TEAM with a minimum of a two-game time slot, and ideally covering a three-game time slot. It is requested that the available gym dates be in separate weeks during the season (no more than one date per week in meeting the minimum number of 4 dates per team). The math for schools with multiple teams is 8 dates for two teams, 12 dates for three teams, 16 dates for four teams, etc... Multiple dates per week for schools sponsoring multiple teams makes perfect sense. If possible, at least one date in every week during our season from the beginning of December to the end of February would be appreciated. Where feasible, we can also try and schedule more than three games in a gym slot if a school is sponsoring more than three teams.

Historically, some schools have been very generous with their gym time, and that has been extemely important in allowing the league to complete a schedule. All things being equal, we would prefer to schedule an equal number of home and away games for each school. Historically, all things have not been equal, and we have generally adopted an attitude that we play the games in the facilities that are made available to us. So... to that end, if you have available gym time, and like to play home games, we always appreciate a generous allocation of gym time.

What Does It Mean To Provide The League An Available Gym Date?
When a school provides an available gym date on this form, the expectation is that this is a unique date and time slot for your gym, that is specifically reserved for use by the Bishop Kmiec JV Basketball League. Creating a schedule for a league like this one is complicated and must address a number of interdependencies, such as team availablility, gym availability, and a desired balance in the number of times each team plays each other. If a schedule is created and then needs to be untangled and reconstructed, the rework effort is significantly worse than the original construction. Some of the worse experiences in this regard have been the result of schools providing the same gym dates and times to multiple leagues. Whether the schools that provided these "shared" dates in the past did so as the result of not thinking these things through thoroughly, or actually believing this could some how work, our experience as a league definitely confirms that this is NOT a workable solution. If a school needs unused gym slots "released" for their own scheduling purposes, we can accommodate any release date after December 1st.



To facilitate scheduling, the league is requesting 4 unique gym date and time slots per TEAM participating in the league.
