Purpose of the Schedule Blackout Dates Form

The purpose of the Schedule Blackout Dates Form is to inform the league of dates when your team is unavailable to be scheduled for games. The intention is to be proactive in identifying conflicts before a schedule is constructed, and ideally avoid the need for reworking the schedule after its initial creation. The expectation is that all teams participating in the league are available to play league games on any dates, Monday through Friday, that school is normally in session (excludes National holidays and common school breaks).

What Represents a Reasonable Blackout Date?

Scheduling a season of basketball games is complicated enough without wildcards like blackout dates... but the reality is that there are certain dates when teams are unavailable and it is best to plan for that in advance when putting together the schedule. Dates that fit in the spirit of the concept of a school team not being available to play a game would be a date when a school is conducting a holiday program, or a date when a school conducts a program such as a ski club, where the majority of the players on a team would be absent for any games scheduled on those dates.

Examples of dates that would be outside the spirit of the blackout date concept would be dates where only a minority of players would be unavailable to play a game. Along those lines, dates where certain players have conflicts due to participation in another sport do not represent dates in the spirit of the blackout concept. Additionally, dates that conflict with coaches schedules should be carefully considered as to whether they fall within the spirit of the blackout date concept. In general, the expectation is that there is a depth to the number of coaches or parents who support a team that would allow for others to fill in when one coach has a conflict. Coaches with travel schedules for work, or commitments such as a bowling league, should make arrangements for other parents or coaches to manage the team in those absences and not submit such dates as schedule blackout dates for their teams.
