I think this is a wonderful league and is good for the children. However, I have one concern (and complaint) that I think needs to be addressed. It is an "unofficial rule" that children are not allowed in the building without adult supervision. I have noticed (I have attended different games, on different days, with my children) that many children (some as young as three years old) run throughtout the hallways, around the gym, and jump on and off the mats without their parents saying a word. They seem preoccupied with the games or talking to other parents. I have witnessed children wrestling on the mats and too many near collisions to count. This is not only distracting, but dangerous as well. If something were to happen, the league could be sued. Do you think some sort of rule could be enacted, and make these parents responsible for supervising their children? I don't think it is unreasonable to ask children to sit for an hour and enjoy the game. This way we could all enjoy the game. Thank you.

I agree with this. Some of these kids have no supervision whatsoever and it does get annoying. Please make parents accountable for their kids behavior.

This has been a problem for years. We have the rule that no children are allowed in the school without a parent. Then we made the rule: No food or drinks in the gym. That lasted a couple of weeks until every other person was bringing in coffee. Then there is a vending machine in the hallway. We used to have eboard members standing at the doors. Most of the volunteers who run the league are coaching while they are at the gym. It is up to parents to be responsible for THEIR children. If a child gets hurt because they were running around in the hallways unsupervised, I will be the first one to defend the league....We do not have the resources to be baby sitters...

I understand the first posters concern and frustration. I thank them for their compliment on the league. There are very few people who volunteer to help run this league of 400 or so kids and it is not easy and compliments are far and few between. Thank you...
My only comment on this situation is this....how can we institute a rule regarding something that a parent should be already doing on their own. A wise man once said..."You cannot govern morality".
Parents must take responsibilty for their own.

I am a little confused. The original poster started to make mention of children who were dropped off or left unattended at the gym, but then went on to talk about younger children who run around and play and jump on the mats. I am not sure which group of children they meant to address. I agree that 5th, 6th, 7th graders should not be dropped off at the gym and left there all night. I see nothing wrong with a few kids coming to watch a game or 2 and see their friends play. The problem starts when the problems start, and unfortunately they ruin it for the rest.
Perhaps what the poster really wanted to comment on were the younger kids who do run around and play and jump on the mats. Remember, it is a gym and this is a recreation gathering. If younger siblings, friends or relatives come to the gym to watch older siblings etc play it isnt the easiest thing to ask them to sit on a bleacher. Of course, every parent should be responsible for thei own child, but singeling out "the kids who wrestle on the mats" isnt fair. I see plenty of middle school girls and boys who walk incessently back and forth and back and forth. Thats what kids do. Yes, safety first, but let them be kids and enjoy a night out or a Saturday afternoon.

I wrote the original post and I am not talking about the children who are dropped off because they are older and know how to behave. What I meant was the younger children (some as young as three) who are running around without supervision even though their parents are sitting in the bleachers. I understand it is a recreation gathering, but it is for the children playing basketball, not for their younger brothers and sisters to jump off the bleachers onto the mats, and run, screaching through the hallways the WHOLE game. Younger siblings, friends, and relatives should be able to sit on the bleachers for an hour to enjoy the game. The middle school boys and girls have always been well behaved even if they walk back and forth often. I understand the motto "let kids be kids"......but there is a time and a place. Kudos to everyone who volunteers for the league, you do a great job and probably don't hear it often enough. I'm sure there are a lot of gripes, but this is a parent who truly appreciates the time and effort you DONATE to the children, which give them self-esteem, team relationships, and confidence building.
THANK YOU!!

To the "Sunshine" poster....yes let kids be kids but within reason. Kids jumping off the bleachers is not something I as president can condone. This activity should be stopped IMMEDIATELY !! All of my GMs will be instructed, should they see this, to stop it immediately! The insurance the league carries covers the basketball players playing basketball on the court ONLY. It does NOT cover children running in halls or jumping off bleachers. This activity, should someone get hurt, puts the entire league in jeapardy. PLEASE PARENTS, do not allow your children to continue this.
On behalf of the entire league, thank you.

I guess parents forget when their own sons and daughters were 3 or 4 or 5 or 9 and they sat quietly in the stands for an hour? My son could get hurt on the court, slip on a wet floor in the hallway after rain or snow, or trip and fall in the bleachers. I do not think the original poster viewed this as a safety issue, just seems like they are annoyed at younger siblings and friends playing around. Im probably a parent of one of the kids you are talking about anyway...so thank you for your concern. :)

Yes, it is a safety concern as well as an annoyance issue. My kids did sit when they were three, four, five, etc. years old. The difference is, the kids on court are covered by insurance, as well as slipping on wet floors, etc. What about the children who get hurt that are left unattended because their parents are preoccupied talking and not paying attention? I did not write the original post but agree with it fully. The trouble with kids these days are their parents are always making excuses for their rude behavior. :):):)

To the "sunny" posts. It is probably your kids who are running between tables at restaurants, climbing over/under pews at chuch, and having tantrums at WalMart until you buy them what they want. But there is nothing wrong with that, let kids be kids. lol

Thanks for your post, but nope, you're wrong. My children are older now and I have always disciplined them and not tolerated out of hand behavior. Are they angels, not at all, but I was not raised by parents who allowed running under tables at restuarants or pitching fits in stores. I have certainly raised mine the same way. Again, thank you for your concern and tell me what this has to do with Colonia Basketball?

Only the doctor can prescribe medication...wethinks...

The Dr has no children in the league this year but we are friends with many of the coaches and eboard members. The Doc will be back next year and has seen this behavior. The Doc knows all to well that if little Johnny fell off of the mats while horsing around that there are some parents who would be looking for possible remuneration (big word, even for the Dr) from the league.

As Lou D has said, the league cannot create rules for morality and it is up to parents to watch their own kids.

The Dr will put on our legal hat now and maybe the league should advise all parents that only the players are covered and parents should hold the league harmless for any injuries sustained off the court. The Dr thinks parents may be more watchful rather than sipping a double skinny cappucino Americana with extra water and shot of espresso.

Well if that's your argument then Grandparents shouldn't go watch either because the bleachers aren't the sturdiest and they could break a hip getting to a spot to sit down.

For the love of God it's a basketball game not a tennis match. There's noise and distractions in basketball. Ever see a game?

Next year maybe the league should start handing out leashes (for kids), muzzles(for kids so they can't speak or yell), and earplugs (for the parents - so they dont have to hear anything)

Muzzles and leashes??? Is that for the parents??? NOW YOU'RE TALKING! Where does the Dr sign up! The Dr thinks Pistol Pete's mind is in the gutter....the Dr likes that!

Pistol Pete, that is the most ridiculous arguement I have ever heard re the grandparents. If they slip and fall it was an ACCIDENT! I don't think that fits into the category of kids jumping from the bleachers to the mats, wrestling on mats three feet off the ground, and running wild in the hallways. Everyone understands it is a basketball game, however, it is not a zoo or a daycare.

PS Pistol Pete, the parents already have ear plugs because they obviously can't hear. Now the only thing they need is blindfolds so they really have an excuse not to see anything either!

In addition, the Dr requests we add whips and chains to the muzzles and leashes....and, what the hey, let's get the grandparents involved...the Dr likes all to get in on the fun...

Sign your kid up for tennis next year, then you can get the peace and quiet you need. Sit in the far set of bleachers if kids making noise really bothers you that much. But then you may have the other middle school kids who are there to hang out. They could be talking and laughing.... hmmmmm.... maybe we could just have them all shot.

Wait...now we have earplugs to add to the other paraphrenalia (another big word for the Dr)??? The Dr is getting confused...started out as simple muzzles and leashes....then added whips and grandparents...now earplugs!!!

Even the Dr knows that the earplugs will not matter because we have MUZZLES!!! DUHHH! The Dr is not that thick, no we are not!

Oh...how did this start...kids being loud in a gym? Isn't that the point of being in a gym is to be loud? The Dr is WISE!!!

No, you idiots. It didn't start because off noise levels. It started off because the kids were acting like animals. Talking and laughing is not a problem.

Acting like animals? Come on now, really? If parents dont want to be "distracted" then yes, maybe they should sit on the far end bleachers. I was at the gym a few times this week and did not see any kids acting like animals...that was rude.

This has obviously gotten to a point of ridiculous. Kids will be kids, however, jumping off bleachers onto the matts cannot be condoned nor permitted.
