Our finals night for the 5/6 & the 7/8 boys will be on March 27 Friday. First game will be the 5/6 boys, tip off at 6:30. We are adding something new this year. We are going to have a DJ there for the evening. In between the two games we will be presenting our departing 8th travel players with special jerseys. Obviously ALL 8th grade travel boys and girls are required to be there but it would be great if ALL the travel teams could attend. The 7/8 boys game will begin at roughly 8PM. Please come out and cheer on the players, help us honor our 8th grade travel players and enjoy the music.

Wow! It sounds like a great night is planned. The DJ is a nice idea. Will there be anything similar being done for the 5/6 & 7/8 grade girls at their Finals next Saturday? or will it be the same as it has been in the past? Just wondering~

Are the boys travel teams going to be required to attend the 7/8 girls finals on Weds night to cheer on their fellow graduates? Too bad the girls don't get a DJ party on their final nights?

I am sure ALL of the girls' parents, of both the travel and rec. teams, would like to know who makes the decisions regarding the finals festivities. Does your board vote on this or does the president simply issue a decree? How about an open meeting for a change? I guarantee you a good showing where you will get an EQUAL representation of both girls' and boys' players parents. Oh that's right EQUAL is what the issue is isn't it? God forbid there be some equality between the girls' and boys' sides. I have tried previously to address the obvious disparity between the two, but now I guess I will air it on the forum since someone else opened up that can of worms.

Why not play four Championship games in one night?

Two boys and two girls games.

Just a suggestion.

Since I asked the original question out of honest curiosity, I feel I need to respond. Anyone who knows me, knows that my husband and I are both VERY involved in a great deal of things: sports as well as the PTOs/schools. So I won't even go there with Foul Shot! However, I asked the original question because my 6th grader asked me, "Why are the 5/6 grade boys more important than my team that is going to the CHAMPIONSHIP rec game?" How should I answer her question??? The boys are more important than the girls??? Well, I don't agree with that. I feel that I can say that honestly as a mother of an 8th grade BOY and 2 GIRLS. I see the inequality and the sad part is so do my daughters!!!

Lou - I apologize for asking the question - but I do think I have a right to wonder!

O:k "foul shot". As you hide behind that name I must respond to you as you obviously can't see all sides. My husband IS one of the people helping to run this league and always coaches 3 teams during each season.

As Leigh Ann says we are all involved giving up our time too. I know Lou gives a lot of time to this league, and I do not question that, I applaud it. My point is he answers to no one. He makes decisions without consulting anyone or maybe with a small faction on the board. You go ahead and ask some of the travel girls how they feel about going to to the boys final to receive their departing jerseys. It is absurd. Are we asking the boys to come to our finals night? Unfortunately, this is about girls vs. boys now though it should just be about basketball.

Have a meeting where people are allowed to voice their opinions and they will. Will the president and "his board" be willing to listen with an open mind and possibly make any changes? I have my doubts, but it is time to open it up and listen to each other instead of attacking each other on here. It is not my preferred way to speak out, but if this is all we have then so be it.

I'm not involved with basketball but I think Buckner has a great idea. If that does not work I think having the 7/8 girls and boys play the finals on the same night so they both get to be honored on the same day and both get DJ.

Play the 5/6 girls and boys on next day.

Just my thought and like I said i have no kids in basketball or any involement.

Lou and I spoke at length about the situation today.

The idea of "Finals Night" and a DJ came about only recently. I was informed of this during the last week.

In speaking with Lou, I expressed that I was disappointed to know about it on short notice because we could have made similar arrangements for the girls division.

That being said, I don't think "Finals Night" was an idea that was brought about to stick it to the girls division by any means. I believe that it was something that came up only a few days before I found out about it.

The short of it is: Good idea but the communication could have been better.

While at the Blue & Gold Challenge this week, Lou and I discussed that in the next season we will either do an all 7/8 grade (boys and girls) finals night and a 5/6 finals night. Or we could do an all boys (5/6 & 7/8) + and all girls finals night. I think either way works.

For this year, we are looking into possibly hiring a DJ for the 7/8 girls finals where the 8th grade travel girls would be awarded their jersey. This will be dependent upon the jersey's being ready and the 7/8 GM approving.

I do not think moving around the 5/6 and 7/8 girls finals on short notice is a great idea at this point since both are due to occur within a week and it would result in pre-planned consolation games getting canceled.

In future seasons I am sure we are going to work this out so that all are happy except those girls that would have normally played a consolation game.

In general, while I believe our rec league is very strong, I think we can communicate better as a league and as a board. Once things settle down and prior to next season I think a general meeting would be a good idea.

As for "Foul Shot" - I understand you don't want to hear people complain but posts carry much more credibility when people post with their real name.

FOUL SHOT: YOU SHOULD STOP SHOOTING AIR BALLS WITH YOUR MOUTH IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT. FIRST OF ALL, YOU'RE BASHING A FAMILY WHO GIVES 125% TO THE RECREATION PROGRAMS IN THIS TOWN. IF YOU KNOW THAT FAMILY, AND OURS YOU WOULD KNOW THAT THE GIRLS DO CARE. THE MAIN GOAL THAT WAS TRYING TO BE ACCOMPLISHED HERE IS THAT EVERYTHING BE CONSIDERED EQUAL BETWEEN THE BOYS AND THE GIRLS. WE APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK LOU AND THE BOARD MEMBERS HAVE DONE AS WELL, BUT WE JUST FEEL YOU MADE AN ERROR IN JUDGEMENT TO AWARD THE BOYS WITH A DJ AND NOT CONSIDER THE GIRLS AT ALL. LET'S HOPE THAT THERE WILL BE MEETINGS IN THE FUTURE WHERE PARENTS CAN VOICE THEIR OPINIONS AND BE HEARD WITHOUT ALL THIS NONSENSE. WE'RE ALL HERE FOR ONE REASON AND THAT IS TO MAKE OUR CHILDREN'S EXPERIENCES FUN AND ENJOYABLE FOR ALL.

Why not just have the girls 7/8 and boys 7/8 play on the same night? Then everyone's happy.

Just an opinion from the wrestling community. Don't really care either way.

The boys have always received priority. It's too late the change this year, but if there is only going to be one night for festivities, it should be 7/8 grade- boys and girls

it's not too late to change - you call up the girls gm and say "Hey, the finals are going to be on blah blah blah."

See how quick that can be handled?

While the suggestions in the last couple of posts are appreciated, I think there are a few reasons that it wouldn't be practical to implement some of these ideas this year on short notice.

One example is that the 7/8 girls semi-finals were held almost two weeks ago so dragging it to 3/28 would be more than a three week layoff. Another is that changing games on short notice to a different night could affect attendance by some players in the championship games, which would be unfair to the affected players and their team.

I have more but you get the idea. I'm willing to speak to anyone about those issues and obviously some may not agree with all of the reasons.

I think this will be fixed for next year without any problems whatsoever. Most people will be happy but we will never please 100%.

The important thing is people aired out some issues here and now hopefully we can learn from it and move on to try to make it better in the future.

Again, I'm always available to discuss any of it whether you agree with me or not. I'm willing to listen and even change my opinion if there is a consensus with a great argument in the other direction.

Thanks for the feedback from one board member that provides an honest answer.
Now to Michele's questions from early on, who is involved in the decision making- one person or the enitre board.
And, when is the next general meeting?

Dave P, I am Matt Wrights counterpart on the Boys side. I don't know when our next "General Meeting will be, but if you want to sit down and discuss your concerns with me, I am available tomorrow evening from 6PM til 10 PM at CMS. Also available on Friday night as well and Saturday morning too.
In general, Lou, myself, Rich or Jerry from the Boys side of things are usually at the gym and I would hope you or anyone else feels we are approachable. We work very hard to provide a pleasant enviroment for players,(gender does not matter) and parents. If their is something we can do better as a league we are all ears. I look forward to speaking with you.

I have been told another area of equity issues between boys & girls teams is the amount of hours/gym time teams get to practice. I would like to know what the facts are. How is gym time decided? Is the schedule worked out so that if say a boys travel team is getting 2 hours of gym time, is the girls team also getting 2 hours gym time? Why can't there be more gym time? Is it an issue the league can fix-getting more gym time & seeing to it the hours are divided up equally? Or is this not seen as an issue? I have 3 daughters who have played rec team for about 6-7 years now and I know for a fact the only time to learn the game is during their 1 hour rec time. One of my daughters has played travel for 3 years now, and 2 have also played in the Mayor's Tournament. The most my kids(girls) travel team has ever had to practice in my personal experiences is about 1.25 hours per week. That's it. The only way to get better at basketball is to be able to be on the court and actually have time to practice. Boys & girls pay the same amount to join, and we pay extra to have kids on travel. I would like to think this means boys & girls get equal gym time to learn.
I do thank the volunteers and do realize a whole lot of time is devoted with personal sacrifice to run the league. My husband & I have volunteered in other rec sports & school events but not directly in this league (basketball) However, if a concern is legitimate than it needs to be addressed and worked out. No name calling, no bashing. Just want to find out what the truth is. I realize no one in the CYBA has any mal-intent at all. I do beleive everyone tries to do things right-sometimes it takes someone to ask the question out loud to find out truth.
Respectfully submitted-
Angie F.

Angie,

Each division of the rec league gets one hour per week to play their game or practice so there is complete equality there.

In the travel program, each team is given a two-hour time slot. The exception this year was the 6th grade girls team, which was organized on short notice this year with the expectation some outside gym time would be available. That team got an hour per week and sometimes more when we split the gym with the 8th grade team.

The girls 8th grade team was given the Wednesday night slot from 8 pm to 10 pm. Since many girls come to the gym at 6pm for rec, I think some practices ended a little early because the girls are in the gym all night and have school the next day.

Boys teams practice Monday or Thursday nights in time slots ranging from 6 pm to 8 pm and 8 pm to 10 pm. They have to contend with kids running from CCD right to practice and vice versa. As you can see, each night has its drawbacks.

Every other night of the week and all day Saturday is used by the rec program.

Where we differ from other towns is that many have mulitple facilities they can use for basketball. We have one that we squeeze every last minute out of.
