Another CFL season is upon us, as 60 guys will take the field this Sunday August 2nd in the 30th (official) year of this wonderful league. This is the 3rd and final year of player protection before all players are thrown into an open draft next season, which means there will be trades with no regard to future considerations. Two new coaches will be taking the helm this season. Mike Zeer will be the third coach of the White team in as many seasons, with Joey Kejbou stepping down due to a late scheduled surgery on his hand. Typically, this injury would be handled with tape and Motrin, but the potential negative effects that the injury could have on his golf game was not worth the risk (in his opinion). Looking forward to seeing Joey back out there next year. Tarik Kama will be taking over the Black team for Roy Sitto who suffered an ugly shoulder injury at the 1st annual CFL Summer Tournament a few weeks back, and who also skipped a playoff game last season. Both new coaches have years of CFL experience and are looking to make the most of the coaching opportunity. A few guys won’t be returning this year as Bruce Toma, Scotty George, and Al Abbo have hung up their cleats. The league will miss Bruce’s soft hands, Al’s holding on virtually every down, and Scotty’s remarkable intensity.

The biggest story in the league right now is the trade involving QB prospect Anthony OchoAcho as well as Timmy Acho to Red for Stefan Kalabat and Ray. The trade gives Red an athletic QB with huge upside in Anthony and a big target in Timmy. The trade appears to be a benefit for both teams as Ray will play the slot position key to Nate’s running attack as well as the middle on defense and Stefan will fill in as the go-to guy on offense.

The league has welcomed 8 rookies this season and this class appears to be one of the most athletic groups in a long time. Sean Mattia, Pat Kinaya, and Max Sheker went 1, 2, and 3 in the draft despite the availability of some solid veterans. The rookie class also has it’s first players from the CCSL which is very exciting for both leagues. Hopefully the CCSL will continue to feed talent into the CFL with talent for years to come.

WHITE: Mike Zeer takes over this squad coming off a rough season a year ago. Mike took advantage of a strong rookie class by drafting three super rookies with his first three picks. However, White faces the same major issue as last year- the lack of a true QB. As it stands, Mike Zeer will start the season under center, with Sal Kesto as the backup plan. Whoever plays QB will have plenty of time to throw with Fadi Gulli and Max Sheker blocking for them. Sean Mattia and Pat Kinaya will have impacts on both sides of the ball, and Lance Sitto will make the rush very strong.

BLUE: Chris Zeer looks poised to make the playoffs for the first time as coach of Blue with the league’s top WR/ DB Tony Attisha as well as the top two-way lineman Dylan Putrus. Rookie honky Bret Burlingame will be a nice compliment to Tony, especially on defense. Brett is also the first true white guy in the league since Jeff Bogden (and his Bike shorts) retired 9 years ago. Pete Rabban rounds out the receiving core and Gabe Zawaideh and Chris Denha will join Dylan on the O and D lines. Chris has stated on the record that he will step down as coach if he does not make the playoffs with this team. On paper this is a playoff team, but we all know the game isn’t played on paper.

GREEN: Please see last year’s preview. This is essentially the same exact team that lost a heartbreaker in last year’s playoffs, minus Mohawk. And like last year, they will only have Nolan for half the season. He is doing his med school residency in New York, or maybe Chicago… actually he’s not sure. Yet he has convinced coach Bobby Seman that he will be there for at least five regular season games (the minimum required for playoff eligibility) and the playoffs. I guess we’ll see. The fact that he’s willing to skip out on his residency to be at CFL games means two things- 1. He is extremely dedicated to the CFL and wants to keep his status as one of the league’s top players, and 2. I will never, ever go to him for any medical issue of any kind.

BLACK: New coach Tarik Kama steps in to take over a revamped Black team. Assistant coach whatdoyouwantmetodo Shuck Chuck Dalou is a trade master and is usually good for one blockbuster a season. If this team stays intact, Sinan Abdul will anchor both sides of the line, and JP Namou will be T-Rock’s primary target on offense. Black will need a re-emergence of Ernest Yeldo on both sides of the ball to be their best. It would also help of Bash Taki showed up for a few games. Fearless JK and Mike Toma will be steady for Black at any variety of positions, and Steve Sagmani and Joey Foumia will help with blocking and rushing.

RED: Coach Anthony Toma has been in the final game the past two seasons but come up short both times. Red is a completely different team than last year with the addition of the Showstopper Jordan Rassam and the subtraction of QB Tarik. But the QB void was filled quickly with Anthony Acho, who will also be a lock down corner. Red has size and speed on the outside with Tim Acho and Lance Samona. Two CCSL’ers, Dani Jajou and Brandon Shafou, will add youth and speed to AT’s always solid defense.

YELLOW: The Champs have reloaded. Lead by coach and the league’s most electrifying player Natham Karrumi, Yellow appears primed for another run at the Chy Cup. Nate acquired Ray Dawood and Stefan Kalabat via trade to go along with two way lineman Derek Putrus. New additions Nick “Mohawk” Hermiz, Justin Orow, and Chris Sesi give this team a whole new level of speed and quickness. In the unlikely event that this team stays intact, Nate will have an arsenal of weapons at the receiver position that will be able to run, catch, and block very effectively. Rookie Mark Hajjar will help on both sides of the line and Branden Yono will assume his center position from last year.

Can Yellow repeat?

Can AT get over the coaching hump?

How will OchoAcho fare at QB?

Can White win with no QB?

Will Nolan show up for any games?

Can Blue get into the playoffs?

Will the league be as fun without Scotty George?

Can Kejbou still golf?

Can the league handle going from 1.7% white (just Russ) to 3.3% white (Russ and Brett)?

Can Nate Vick finally learn how to throw? (I doubt it)

Everyone is looking forward to some highly competitive games at West Bloomfield High this year. See everyone Sunday!!

Nice job Joey-Freaking hilarious

Since posting and talking trash on here almost ruined my career, I will keep it clean once again this year.

Just wanted to welcome the rookies to the league, watching Shawn and Pat at try-outs made me realize if i didnt get in shape early this year that they would run circles around me so you guys are already making the league better.

I hope everyone has a great year and a lot of fun may God Bless you all.

P.S
Dylan is a killer
I wouldnt go to nolan either joey
Lancey to play receiver
Schuck to pull a "blockbuster"
Scotty is my favorite atcho
I miss Bruce and Scotty already
who would win in a race Bob running or Nathan walking
over under on white wins 1.5
percentage of the league on steroids 20%
Wheres Amer?
When is Joey J returning?
Exactly how fearless is JK?
Ray is Good
Russ is a Legend
How many cheap shots will AT throw this year? And is that why he never wins it all?
How many motrins will JP need per game this year listening to tarik and chuck schuck
Does tarik even know who JP is yet?
How many times will i say DASS A BADD WHITE BOY every time whitey makes a play on our team
When will Sal start lobbying to be the QB for white? if that hasnt happened already
How long does Justin Orow need to stretch to be effective?
All the respect i gained for Joe K last year is all gone-
How long before ty and Norm blame Derek D for everything that goes wrong with Green? And Will it be warranted?
thats it for now, Go blue!!!!!!

Please add under Yellow team preview-

"Nick Ammori is the rock of Yellow's defense, and the most improved player in the league. He lead the league in pick 6's last year, and had an unbelievable showing in the championship game. Quite frankly, i'm shocked that Nate didn't protect him because if he lost him, Yellow would not win a game. Chris Zeer offered Tony for Nick Ammori straight up and Nate declined."

How's that?

I was just expecting you to say Nick Ammori is also on that team, but your version will do.
