It happened in the opening drive of the game, after Team White’s drive leading to a Jordan Rassam touchdown, the momentum was all White everything. Joey Jonna, coach of Team White, set the tone early for his team. He got help from the MVP of the game Rassam, on a lineman release, which looked all too familiar for some 300 fans of the 31st Annual Chaldean Football League Chy Cup Championship Game.

Jonna had one specific plan after coming back from a two year medical leave; win. He drafted Rassam, an untraditional yet effective lineman, in the first round, which to my knowledge, has never been done by any other coach in CFL history. The combination worked all season long.

Team Green, led by first year coach Tony Attisha, took their first possession and offered White another scoring opportunity. Quarterback Mike Zeer errantly threw the ball in the direction of his lineman, only to see Rassam pick it off and walk it in unscathed for his second touchdown of the game.

White led 14-0 and didn’t need another point to win on this night. Green did show a few signs of life late in the second quarter, but couldn’t convert as Zeer found White defenders, Timmy Acho and Nick Hermiz with other plans. Zeer was intercepted four times in this game, with a possible fifth had Acho continued the “process” of completing the catch as he went to the ground. Alasas, I thought he caught it.

Key plays were turned in by Green’s Justin Orow, who had an All Star year for Green at every position he played, scoring a touchdown and intercepting a pass from Jonna to keep it close. His interception was especially solid because he went up, caught the ball at its highest point and wrestled it away from Acho as they went to the ground.

Zeer had an off or awful night any way you call it; however, you have to credit White’s defense, especially animated rusher Chris Denha, linebacker Marvin Yeldo and Jonna’s ability to manage the game. It was all white everything from the start.

White finished the game with a score of 20-7 and capped off a great year for the CFL. With over 300 fans coming out to show their support, this was easily the highest attended game in league history. A special thanks to the fans, the volunteers, the girls from the WCFL and the Powder Puff participants for making the night a memorable one.

Game Notes…After the game I interviewed Rassam on the field, he looked at me and said, “I gotta be the MVP shuck,” no doubt in my opinion…Lance Samona was limping on his leg but fought thru the pain to finish out the game…Branden Yono has now won the Cup three years in a row…Nelson Brikho got __________...Rookie of the Year Mike Sesi is a good kid and Ramzy Kizy, Jr continues his streak in CFL infamy has he has yet to miss a game for an injury, a wedding or for being hung over.
