| Chy Cup Championship Preview 2013 By Joey Jonna & Derek Dickow
33rd Annual Chy Cup Championship Game “Under the Lights” West Bloomfield High School Saturday, October, 19 8:00 pm
Another unbelievable CFL season will come to an end this Saturday night at West Bloomfield High School. The season had many ups and downs, and the playoff teams were not decided until the last play of the last game of the regular season.
The league is full of talent and the product on the field is awesome. All the players were thrown into the draft this year, which is always exciting and provides for coaching changes, new stars emerging, and lots of trades. And though we battle each other every week on the field, we are brothers outside the lines. That was never more apparent than this year, which started off with tragedy.
The year began with grief and heartache felt for the Mansour family who lost Alexander and Gabrielle to a tragic boating accident on July 15. Then, very abruptly on August 2, we lost Mona Binno Sawa.
As a sign of gratitude, respect and in the spirit of celebrating Sunday, we started a new tradition for the CFL. Both teams meet in the middle of the field and offer one Our Father and one Hail Mary before the start of every game.
RIP Alexander and Gabrielle Mansour and Mona Binno Sawa
On To Football
BLUE VS. WHITE
The championship game this year pits the league's newest coach, Justin Orow, and arguably its most versatile player in the game, against the longest tenured coach, Joey Jonna, a seasoned quarterback and coach with a recorded history of winning, to the tune of five Chy Cups.
Every Chy Cup game is special, but this game features two of the league's most electric players in Jordan "Showstopper" Rassam and Andrew "Superman" Shango.
Team Blue
Blue, 8-2 coming into the playoffs, was the only team this year to not make a single trade. They have the league's highest scoring offense as well as the best defense in terms of points allowed. Orow, who’s done a phenomenal job with the difficult task of being a rookie coach and quarterback, leads them on both sides of the ball.
They feature Mike Sesi and rookie Mazen Jaddou at the receiver spots with Derek Dickow and Peter Namou in rotation at the slot position. The Showstopper and Derek Putrus will block for Orow and 26 year veteran Anthony Toma will lock down the center position on Blue’s offense.
On defense, Orow has Lance Samona calling a mix of defensive schemes to fluster their opponent all season. Steve Sagmani will assist Rassam with the rush and Namou plays a key component to Blue’s defense in the linebacker position. Look for Orow, Samona, Jaddou or Sesi to knock down passes or pick off Jonna, as this defense was built to win.
Team White
White, 6-4 in the regular season, comes into the game with a good blend of young talent and veteran leadership. Jonna has a key weapon and one that he traded up for in the draft. Superman is the real deal on both sides of the ball. Jonna will also look for Joey Kejbou and Norman Yono, Jr. as his primary targets. Veterans Brian Najor and Bobby Seman will provide Jonna with protection and as a safety net for short release patterns. Look for Danny Shaba to make an impact at the center position.
On defense White has rookie Jordan Rabban and Najor provide a rush and rookie Derek Bahri provides speed in the backfield. Rookie Jason Bakou will also look to pull flags from the linebacker position. White has a great deal of speed on defense and can break up the deep ball. On paper their defensive backfield is arguably built like an all-star team.
Under the Lights
The teams split two meetings during the regular season- a shootout in Week 1 and thriller in Week 6. No doubt this game will be more of the same and come down to a few key plays. The Showstopper has been making plays on offense, defense, and special teams for years now and will impact this game one way or another. Superman Shango, the league's top overall pick, is newer to the scene but has been nothing short of spectacular this season. Both players are worth the price of admission.
In the end, only one team can hoist the cup and cement their place in CFL history. Who's it going to be?
